it was amazing
bookshelves: 2024-reads, classics, dystopian

Wow, this was something. I had a total love/hate relationship with this when I was reading it. I was initially annoyed with the redundancy of it. It is incredibly dark and depressing. The grim reality of this poor man's life is kind of gut wrenching. Being written in the 1950s, some of the language is a bit archaic as well. I don't pretend to be any sort of wordsmith, but it is not typical for me to have to look up so many words.

Having had some time to sit with my thoughts, I've found myself returning to this book often. It is really such a unique dystopian story. The redundant day-to-day activities that Neville must endure are told that way deliberately. It is a sad existence he is living, and there is little to no hope of things turning around for him. The second half of the book I just loved. And the ending is *chef's kiss.*

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Agreed..so happy I read it since the difference between the book and film is dramatic

Donne It's been awhile since I've read this story, but I do remember it being a really good one. Good review, Susan.

I never saw the movie, and I think I'm good with continuing to skip it since I'm sure to be disappointed!

The Will Smith movie seriously botched the ending. Leave it to Hollywood to turn something so solemn and bleak into sentimental claptrap.

By the way, it's great that you allowed yourself to think enough about the story to appreciate it further. I often do the same, which is why writing about what we read gives us space to fully realize our own feelings about them, and why it can be so rewarding and cathartic. Very good review.

I'll just best they turned it into a daft action movie; that's what it looked like. I have no desire to watch Hollywood bastardize the book. Thank you, Jonathan!
