Lark Ascending
by
From the beginning it clawed at my heart, my head , scared the hell out of me actually, and I almost wanted to stop reading it. This dystopian novel is a departure from House’s southern stories that I’ve read. I couldn’t give up on it , though, because of his beautiful writing and if you’ve read his other books , you’ll know he’s a born storyteller.
Lark is ninety and looking back to the time when he was a young man on a boat to Ireland with his mother and father, all that are left of those he loved seeking refuge from a world that is burning from climate change, a world now governed by Fundamentalists. Taking place in the not too distant future and sounding like an all too realistic scene , this is beyond scary. Certainly a message, a warning, but such an important one to heed.
With the fires, the government collapse, the Slaughters there is darkness, grief and violence , but somehow Silas House manages to let us see light and love , the unbroken human spirt in the face of it.
I received copy of this book from Algonquin through NetGalley.

Terrific review Angela, I enjoyed this one too! Can’t really go wrong with a Silas House book!

Karen, thanks . I think my favorite of his is A Parchment of Leaves, but I have more to read by him .

That was my first and still his best IMHO

Antoinette, thanks so much . This is as I said a departure from his novels set in the south , but beautifully written. I highly recommend A Parchment of Leaves .

The future gets closer by the day. Terrifying! 😳

This sounds right up my alley. Ha, well, sort of, because I’m not a dystopia kind of gal. I guess I’m just thinking of how much I loved Light Pirate. Anyway, fantastic review! Will check it out!
Debbie, I’m not really a “dystopian kind of gal” either , but I’m glad I read this. I’m planning on reading The Light Pirate for the same reason, I read this one- the author’s writing. I’m waiting a bit though.
Elyse, I know what you mean. The description as well as some reviews do tell a lot about it . But I didn’t want to miss the writing. Thanks so much .
Lisa, scary , but in a different way . The focus is more on the struggle of a few people to survive , more about the impact of climate change .
Loved reading your thoughts, Angela. Even though they scare me like no other, I enjoy reading dystopian novels.
Jennifer, thanks so much. If you enjoy the genre, I think you’ll love this one . He’s a fabulous writer.
Great review, Angela. I've been thinking about this once since Silas interviewed Barbara Kingsolver during the first leg of her book tour. I've not read him before, and I'm growing more interested in dystopian/apocalyptic writing... so this might be right up my alley!
Lovely review, Angela. I’m glad you didn’t give up on it either. I’m not a dystopian fan but some writers can do it so well that it just doesn’t feel like it!
Melissa , I’ve enjoyed a number of dystopian novels, but as a rule not a genre I’m drawn to . What drew me to this book was my love of the author’s writing.
A lovely and heartfelt review, Angela. I love the way that he writes, and his stories, but I was surprised how different this was from most of his others that I've read, too.

My absolute favorite!

Yikes!! Good one, Angela!!
I bought this recently, but I'm not so sure. I tend to really get inside a story but, like you said, this could scare the hell out of me!😱
Maybe if I read it in daylight?🌞🤔

Jodi, thanks ! Daylight won’t make it less scarier . Scary in the sense that - omg - this could happen here !

Except, for me, everything is scarier at night. My mood sinks WAY low after sunset.🌑⤵

Definitely a departure for House but if it contains his lyrical prose, I'm intrigued. Great review, Angela 🧡
Wonderful review, Angela! I just finished this one recently and loved it. It holds lots of scary scenarios that could very well be our future. I see this was a powerful read for you, as well.
