I was pretty disappointed in this book because I've liked Howard's last few books quite a bit. This one suffered from some issues.
It is the story of Lucy, whose sister Nicki disappeared a year ago and has started taking it into her own hands to try to flush out her kidnapper. She puts herself in dangerous situations in order to possibly be taken by the same man, she just wants to know what happened to her sister. The police have a task force and are working to find Nicki, as well as some other missing women that appear to have been taken in a similar manner. Two women, peripheral members of the police, think there may be even more victims.
I wanted to like this one so much, and many of my reviewer friends have loved it. I just didn't connect with any part of the story, it took me much longer to get through this book than I normally would have. It's really disjointed, skipping from perspective to perspective and timeline to timeline. There are times where you don't have any idea whose head you're in--that is the point when you get to some of the twists because sometimes you will believe you're in one character's head when it really was another one entirely, and the same thing with timelines.
This created a chaotic type of reading experience for me, I wanted it to be more cohesive and way less scattered. There are parts that are police procedural, yet just when I got into that groove it would switch to the villain's POV, then abruptly we go to Lucy's POV just long enough to gain momentum, then another switch. Even though that should have made the book fast paced, it slowed it way down for me. The premise is good overall and I like missing people stories!
Then I must talk about the ending. Ugh. Didn't like it.
Many, many people have loved this one, but I'm not one of them. Waving from outlier island.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

I am hoping to have more reading time this week. I always think--oh, it's summer, I will have a ton of reading time, but nope.

Sorry, this didn’t work for you, Melissa!! I understand were you’re coming from! Thank you for a Fair honest review.
Uh-oh! I keep seeing mixed reviews for this one now… I still plan on reading it, but I won’t keep my expectations super high. Sorry you didn’t enjoy this one more. Great review, Melissa!
I need to take notes from your reviews on how to write a review of a book I didn't enjoy. Thanks for sharing this review and for your honesty.
Great review, Melissa! I am reading this right now and while I'm enjoying it, I completely agree with it feeling disjointed. I just had to skip back like 10-chapters to read it all again because I got almost done and was like wait a minute...something I thought I had understood from earlier on was incorrect. I think I got confused when it was skipping between perspectives, I thought something I had read was one perspective but it was really another...LOL. So yeah, needless to say, I definitely get what you're saying!

LOL I felt like I was writing in circles but that is how I felt while reading!

It works sometimes when it is done sparingly, once in a book or maybe twice at the most, but this one just over used that plot device.

I was wondering if it was because I usually listen to her books rather than reading them. I'll look forward to your thoughts. Maybe this one is better on audio.

Damn! Sorry to hear this one disappointed after the last few. A few endings are lacking lately. Great review, Melissa 🖤

I like her too, definitely will read another one of hers.

NOOOOO *drops to knees* 😂😂😂 tbh this seems like a book you're either rocking with or you're not. I've seen several reviews expressing sentiments similar to yours. I'm sorry it didn't work for you!! Great review as usual 💗💗💗
I ended up "enjoying" it but am freaked out by the story at the same time. I cannot relate to some of the women in this story but I wouldn't mind following the detective and Angela around in the future. Once again, great review, Melissa!

It does seem to be one way or the other for this one!

Thanks Marilyn, I wouldn't mind that either!

Great review, Melissa. I hemmed and hawed about this one for a while before finally adding it to my to-read list. CRH hasn't been a big hit with me; I've never given the stuff I've read of her work more than 3stars. However, a lot of people I follow really liked it so I followed the crowd and added it. Time will tell if it's another CRH 3star read for me.

For me, I almost always give her books 4 stars, because I like the unique storylines. This one just didn't resonate with me as much as the others. I'll be interested to see what you think.
