Great ending, but the journey there was a little rough. I'm in this series to see James Reece kick ass and the first two thirds absolutely did not deliver on that front. There might have been a single action scene during that time, but the rest was spent on the author trying to connect his narrative to real world politics. The endless commentary on the state of the world broke my immersion relatively quickly, because it often feels out of place and like the author is talking directly to the reader about his personal beliefs rather than anything serving the story.
Things got a lot better in the final third as Carr gears up the action and it is as good as it ever has been. The methodical way the author goes over every combat encounter is always enjoyable to read. It ended up redeeming the novel a bit for me and I don't think it's a bad book overall, but it is definitely still the weakest of the bunch.

This review is exactly how I felt about the book too. I love the series, but this was the weakest - which is still a great book - because the rest of the series is amazing!

Nailed it. Carr’s writing has always been extremely transparent in that way: you know exactly what type of gun, what brand of knife, what bottle of wine, etc he likes. At least the product placement has been greatly toned down since the first few books. But this book probably went further than the others in trying to relate it to world events and in this Carr was very transparent as to where his sympathies lie. Hey - mine are in the same place so I’m not complaining about that. What I am complaining about is that the conversations- particularly amongst the Russians - are just not believable. That is the place for Carr to get on his soapbox. It feels forced and out of place.
Absolutely! The monologues that could be pulled directly from Fox News or CNN really pull me out of the story. And this is from someone who is a big consumer of news!
I couldn’t agree more. I’m only 1/3 of the way into this book and I am really struggling to care and have been doing a lot of skimming.
