it was amazing
Read 2 times. Last read August 28, 2012 to August 30, 2012.

An anti-review
I don’t read reviews of books, of which I am damn sure I will be reading it very soon. Now, I don’t know how this habit affects my reading.

So, what happened was..
I was not aware of the fact that “I had to be surprised when the second part of the book starts and wonder what happened to the story with Sherlock Holmes in it and how that mystery was solved! Moreover, I had to wonder whether the second part was from some other book, somehow got binded in my copy and curse the publishers”. I was not surprised and neither did I curse the publishers.

As I was ill-prepared for reading, this resulted in me being not disappointed like I was supposed to be.
I was not aware of the fact that “I had to loathe the second part because it didn’t have Sherlock Holmes but instead Mormons and whatnots”. I couldn't loathe it because it was equally good.

I was even not aware of the fact that “I had to drop my jaw when Sherlock Holmes says ‘Gentleman, let me introduce you to Mr. Jefferson Hope, the murderer of...’”. But I did, so atleast I got some expression right.
You see, I was not aware of such shortcomings and issues so I enjoyed it a bit more than I should have. It’s a promise that I will hate the second part and enjoy it less on my re-read.

And I mean no...
description

Earlier...
Okay, what the hell am I going to write for this review without writing spoilers, because everything turns out to be a spoiler.
Damn! This is hard.
I don’t know what to include and what not to include!
Maybe, I should include this line, for this is best:
I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.
No, I should not, since almost every reviewer has used this line. So I am not going to write it in my review too and lengthen it unnecessarily, I will skip this.
This is going to be damn hard, I can't find a single thing to write about.
And what should I write about Sherlock Holmes?
Kemper wrote: “Sherlock Holmes is a dick.” and got bunch of votes. I should also write something like that.
Like, Sherlock Holmes is douchebag. Nah! that doesn’t sound nice and that is not correct either.
I don’t want to write about the same issue of disjointed second part being a problem and this part being boring too, I didn’t felt so. But almost every review says same thing.

I can’t think of anything to write. I should probably skip this one and write review of Cosmicomics, I need to edit that ‘FUCKING MINDFUCK’ I have left over there.

No, I must write something!
Maybe, I should review others' reviews and in this process the book will also be reviewed. This sounds like good idea, but may be offensive. So I should mention in my review at last that:
I mean no harmdisrespect, I just happen to love Sherlock Holmes.

Nilesh Kashyap Two things:
First, I am not criticizing or mocking any reviews. I am just trying to come up with something fun and creative.
Second, please don’t ask me what an anti-review is! It just looked nice as title.
*fingers crossed*

s.penkevich I quite enjoyed this, it is a nice dive into the ideas behind reviewing, a meta-review I suppose. No shame in loving Holmes, he has survived being always at the top of pop culture for this long for a reason

Thanks S., I'm glad that you enjoyed this. And its very generous of you to say that its a meta-review.
Also I think that this failed as a review, seeing the number of votes it got.

s.penkevich Eh, it's a slow day on goodreads. Float it again in the later hours when the big push of readers are online (I always feel you get a free float to reach a bigger audience)

Toby The mormon story is the better part of this book for me. I'm going to read a non-Holmes Doyle at some point in the hope that it lives up to the mormon section of this book.

Yeah, second part is the strong part of the novel. Writing a emotional drama in a detective story and that too separately is great. I also enjoyed second part more, but most reviewer found it boring and moreover in inroduction it is written that one can skip The Country of Saints part.
I will also try to read non-Holmes book by ACD in future.

Garima Nice Review!

I thought it's probably a series of short stories and Holmes was not able to solve his first case and it was upto reader to decide who the murderer was, which was rather hard to digest as having read Holmes extensively since my childhood. Thankfully I was wrong.

Nilesh Kashyap Sherlock Holmes did solve the case, just we were not told how. And I was not confused as it was mentioned part 2. But many reviewers write about being confused.

I hope that you will enjoy your meeting with Sherlock Holmes.

Melki I read A Study in Scarlet for free online, so I really suspected foul play when I got to the second part, since there was no actual binding to convince me it was part of the same book. BUT, I liked the Mormon story MUCH more than the London tale.

Garima Nilesh wrote: "Sherlock Holmes did solve the case, just we were not told how."

Umm..I can't recall properly about this book but there is always a clear cut description in his novels as to how a case is solved, a description mostly addressed to Dr. Watson.

Same here Melki, I enjoyed the story of mormons very much but at the same I just loved how Sherlock Holmes is characterised.

Yeah there is, but at the end of second part. Have you read entire Sherlock Holmes?

Garima I have read this Unabridged complete works of Sherlock Holmes, which has around 60 case stories, but there could be more stories in some other book.

Sunny I stopped reading your review at "...neither did I curse the publishers." I want to be surprised. :)

That is all, 56 short stories and 4 novels.

Well, that was the biggest thing to be surprised about.

Mala You have mastered the art of 'anti-review': i still remember your review of 'Journey to Virginland-Epistle1'& chuckle!
I had initially given this book two stars rating, but seeing your 5* rating, upgraded it to 4*.Thought,what the heck, this is Mr.Holmes,my hero!

Wow! this review made you to change your rating, it is best compliment to my review.
I remember Armen mostly from that thread, he was the funniest. Right?
Thanks for like and comment!

Nona You have much more intelligently and humorously expressed my feelings of DO NOT WANT when it comes to a certain kind of review.

Brock Wroblewski This is my opinion exactly. Other reviews cite the books confusing structure as a negative, but I think it's exactly the opposite. Even though I didn't read any reviews beforehand, I still had the moment of confusion when the setting changed to Utah. I don't think that's a bad thing, and connecting the backstory and the frontstory was an interesting study.

Dimitris Angelos I wholeheartedly agree with this review, kudos to you sir.

message 29: by Greg (new) - rated it 3 stars

Greg Nilesh, great review! I enjoyed every word!

Paul Payne I totally agree, I only read the reviews after finishing the book, Utah was unexpected, and had me wondering where Conan Doyle was going with it and whilst it took him a bit too long to get there, it was overall well worth it.
