Disclaimer:
Right up front I am going to tell you: parts of the book made me upset. I can't really tell you why because that is giving away part of the story. What I can tell you is that my uncomfortableness of where the story was going was resolved satisfactorily by the end of the book. The concern and misconception I was worried about was plainly explained and pointed out to not be the root of the crimes. That being said, I highly recommend reading the author's note after you've read this book. I finished it thinking the author had the same hesitations as myself and wanted to clearly draw a distinction between what is and isn't mental illness and what is considered as atypical behavior. Okay, that's as good as I can get without spoiling parts of the book. Please don't jump to conclusions while reading and give the story and characters the chance to play out.

Review:
As is probably evident by my super long disclaimer above, this book gave me lots to think about during the course of reading it. I loved the mistaken paths and the further development of Jo's character. I enjoyed the time and space taken to develop characters that may not continue to play a large role in the series. I especially enjoyed how the victim and perpetrator both had to deal with internal negative voices. It provided a great comparison as to how the same situation can impact people differently. It is these details that makes these stories so engaging! The plot itself was super smart and well thought out. I can tell the author stepped carefully in her presentation of some of the characters and most people will know who the kidnapper is early enough on to follow the clues and want to yell answers out to Jo. I really enjoyed this book and what it brought to the series!

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
