Nordic Noir is a type of Scandinavian crime fiction and television drama that typically features dark storylines and bleak urban settings.

Microhistory is a form of large-scale history dealing with large groups of cultures over very long time periods.

I was wondering the same about your third question of local authors. I live in North Carolina which is home to none other than Nicholas Sparks, among others but he's my all time favorite.
Hope this helps. Happy Early Holidays!

Janessa wrote: "I have two questions, one is what does Nordic noir mean? and two if I read a book by another from Colorado does that count as a local author?"
Janessa wrote: "Also what does microhistory mean?"
Hi Janessa! I see that Stephanie answered these above too, but figured I'd add a bit. Thanks, Stephanie!
From wikipedia -
Nordic noir: is a genre of crime fiction written from a police point of view. The language is simple and eschews metaphor, the settings have bleak landscapes, and the mood is dark and morally complex. The genre depicts a tension between the apparently still and bland social surface in Scandinavia and the murder, misogyny, rape, and racism it depicts as lying underneath. It contrasts with the whodunit style such as the English country house murder mystery.
So, basically dark Scandinavian crime fiction. These Goodreads lists should give you some ideas. There may be a lot of overlap.
Nordic Noir
Scandi Crime Fiction
Nordic Noir Required Reading
Microhistory: is the intensive historical investigation of a well-defined smaller unit of research (most often a single event, the community of a village, or an individual). In its ambition, however, microhistory can be distinguished from a simple case study insofar as microhistory aspires to "[ask] large questions in small places".
Basically, a micro history looks at a bigger issue by focusing on a small part. More lists:
Microhistory: Social Histories of Just One Thing
Medical Microhistories
Microhistories: Microscopic Studies of Individual Events, People and Places
Argumentative/Persuasive/Microhistory Nonfiction Titles
As for local. I think everyone can determine how local they want to focus. I would think that in your state is ok though. Some people live in really rural areas that may not have a more local published author. I live just outside of a decent sized city, so I may look for an author from there, but I have no issue with including author's from within my state.
