Neither the public library nor the one in the high school in the small Great Plains town where I lived had books that interested a fifteen-year-old male. I bought books off the rack at the local United grocery store instead. None were great literature. Most have been forgotten. The writers kept me frantically turning the pages, though. All had covers that made me want to look.

“A thousand years from now nobody is
going to know that you or I ever lived. The cynic is
right, but lazy. He says ‘You live, you die and nothing you do will ever make a difference.’ But as long as I live, I’m going to be like Beethoven and shake my fist at fate and try to do something for those who live here now and who knows how far into the future that will go. If I accomplish nothing more than making my arm sore, at least I will be satisfied that I have lived.”
Jackson Burnett, The Past Never Ends

“Justice isn’t about fixing the past; it’s about healing the past's future.”
Jackson Burnett

“The prairie skies can always make you see more
than what you believe.”
Jackson Burnett, The Past Never Ends

“The past is never dead. It's not even past.”
William Faulkner, Requiem for a Nun

“We all need to look into the dark side of our nature -- that’s where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we’re busy denying.”
Sue Grafton

“The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

[Commencement Address at Yale University, June 11 1962]
John F. Kennedy

“I began to curse the past for passing.”
Mara Rostov, Eroica

“He recognized it and knew it. In others—clients, witnesses, or sometimes adversaries, he had seen or heard it: A gesture, a phrase, or a tone which exposed unintended truth in the beat of a second.”

Thanks for letting me know, Allyse. When it become available in the US, would you please let me know? I'm behind on my reading but when I catch up, if it's not available here, I'll just have it shipped from fishpond. Good luck with it.

Allyse Near Hello Jackson! Congrats on your book! Mine's almost impossible to get hold of outside of Australia/New Zealand at the moment. You can only really get it in paperback from the website fishpond.com.au. :)

Kim Hi Jackson. Thanks for the friendship invitation. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and reading your reviews.

Maureen Hi Jackson! Sorry it's taken me so long to come back and thank you for your message! I don't tend to read much mainstream fiction but there's so many interesting books out there, that I just follow where they lead. :)

It's nice to see you're a fan/friend of Duke's. More people should read him. Also, Pop. 1280! Hurray! Have you read any Maritta Wolff? I recently read two (Night Shift and Whistle Stop) that I need to review but they were excellent. In some ways she felt like she was channelling the same vibe as Jim Thompson.

While I'm here, I'd like to extend an invitation to the group I belong to, fiction files redux. We don't post as frequently as we used to, but we are always looking for new blood. :)

Catch you on the flip flop,

Maureen

Jackson Burnett Thanks. I'll be interested in Dead Connection.

Jackson

message 3: by Cher

Cher Thanks for the invite. You say the nicest things. I wrote a short review about Creole Belle today. I had to absorb the story for 2 days after finishing it before I could get a handle on what I would write. I'm going to start on Alafair's book Dead Connection tonight. Will let you know how she does.

Melanie Hi Jackson

You bet :)

Melanie

Benjamin Sobieck Thanks for the friend add!
