Philip’s first review of the year

it was ok
This would have been a 4 star if not for the end. There is no end. This is not a book but a segway into the next volume. There is no conclusion. In fact it effectively stops mid-chapter and mid-scene. I don't mind some cliffhangers for a sequel but literally nothing is resolved.

Good - story setting characterisation
Bad - not a book, just a part.

I won't buy the sequel because of this deliberate treatment of the story when the rest of the story has

Judas 62 by Charles Cumming

Philip’s last review of the year

really liked it
Just finished this book two and book one. Like the first book and review, this is a smart stylish spy-thriller with echoes of the contemporary Slough House series first book Slow Horses by Mick Herron . Of course it also has links to other older school spy thrillers from the likes of Deighton Len or John le Carré

Less growing up background in the second story but still enough history to set up the more contemporary story

Waiting for next in series.
