One of the laugh-out-loud funniest volumes in a while as we flash back to the origins of the prison escape artist Shiraishi while the rest of the gang stop over in an Ainu village where something seems a little off. Good stuff!

Another fun volume!

Some things I liked in vol.9:
-the impasse between two groups could have been resolved in a bloody fight but Asirpa's stomatch gurgled and everybody else was hungry so they had a meal instead
- The Last Supper reference is a gem
- I didn't save you because I like you.. you two-timing bastard
- Asirpa teaching the guys how to cook and Ogata refusing to chitatap, the bastard
-Sugimoto and Ogata and Ushiyama wrecking shit up, the most dangerous trio
-Shiraishi backstory? kinda???
-Hijikata and Shinpachi reunion messed me up
-Sugimoto going berserk as he realized Asirpa was in danger, I love his caring side and I love his violent af side
-Tanigaki and Inkarmat and Cikapasi kid <3

This volume shows the Escape King's escapes through various penitentiaries. I loved how Shiraishi proved his point that Kumagashi is one hell of an artist. That bit was hilarious! 😂

Really enjoyed all the character moments in the yakuza-infested kotan. Sugimoto being polite and trusting until the second he thinks Asirpa is in danger, Ogata deciding maybe he doesn't completely hate Sugimoto, Ushiyama judo throwing a bear... also I'm into whatever the old men have going on.

I am getting a bit lost in the motivation of some characters but other than that Golden Kamuy is still really entertaining. Shiraishi's "origin" story is absolute blast!

Golden Kamuy, Vol. 9 (Chapters 81 to 90) opens in the aftermath of the run-in with psychotic taxidermist, Yasaku Edogai. Now, Sugimoto, Asirpa, and the rest of the gold hunters must prove the validity of the human skins with tattoos that form a map to the gold. Yoshitake Shiraishi, the “Escape King,” knows someone who can, the very talented art forager and counterfeiter, Choan Kumagishi, whom he knew as a fellow prisoner. Our heroes aren't the only ones looking for Kumagishi. We also learn how Shiraishi earned the name, “the Escape King.”

The Golden Kamuy manga is certainly one of the best historical fiction comic books that I have ever read. It is so intense, yet creator Satoru Noda often tells segments of the story using humour and broad comedy.

Golden Kamuy Graphic Novel Volume 9 offers two intense battle scenes. However, one of them involves intimate details concerning the way Ainu treat guests and other titbits. Much of Vol. 9 deals with the history of “the Escape King,” and it is a rather nice turn of humour. I don't think I have ever come across a character who deliberately found a way to be imprisoned so many times.

Getting Shiraishi’s backstory be like: he’s an idiot, until he doesn’t want to be. He definitely plays up his “clueless” image to create situations where he is underestimated. It’s a smart tactic and he definitely is worthy of his monicker! But also sometimes he really just is that silly.

I’m gonna say it, I like when Sugimoto goes full feral. His unflinching determination in battle is just so fun to watch. All his sequences are drawn really well, they almost jump off the page at me. But seeing him fight with Ogata and Ushiyama was really cool and they make for an interesting trio. Their strengths are wildly different.

What a fun volume. Shiraishi had an awesome and hilarious back story that keeps you laughing. It was a great way to ease up on the tenseness of the story and a welcome break from the more grotesque aspects of the story. The second part involving a village was also really good. The action was freaking amazing and then it also really went to show just how much Asirpa means to Sugimoto. I'd say this has been one of my favorite volumes yet.

Gawd! The Da Vinci Last Supper riff was too much! Hah! Perfect lead in for the uncomfortable alliance to seek out an art forger. It’s impressive how many directions Noda sensei sends this book spiraling into and still manages to keep it engaging. And boy, that creepy Nikaido chapter title page is amazing, but... zoiks! Lots of everyone’s favorite escape artist Siraishi as the cover suggests... his conscience may be catching up to him or is Sugimoto catching on to him?

¡Yo te conozco, eres Shiraishi!

Very hilarious volume. Especially with Shiraishi's "first love."

Really loved Asirpa's group when they separated; the four is so funny. What an odd group. They're all under Asirpa, but Ogata really didn't say Citatap HAHA.

Anyway, Hijikata's and Nagakura's bit of history is quite well-introduced in this volume. Looking forward to more.

But I suddenly got depressed on the last bits of the chapters, so I'm giving this a 4.5 for now. Sorry Shiraishi.

Another great volume. Hilarious at that too, brought to you by Shiraishi as our cover boy.

You wouldn't not amused with his backstory, it was sidesplitting story!

Oh and the Last Supper hint is scary somehow, I went all the way to look for which one was Jesus and which was one Judas on that famous painting.

The groups continue to slowly move around Hokkaido and close in on more pieces of the map.
The beauty of nature and the savage side of humans is shown really well here as well. Lots of action, and Ainu culture is still being shown pretty well from what I can tell.

Asirpa and Sugimoto's relationship means the world to me.

Asirpa was onto these fools in a picosecond. It was very cathartic watching the conpeople get slaughtered by Sugimoto and the women whose families they killed.

Ogata was there.

4.7/5.

This volume had a bit more comedy, but I enjoyed it just as much.
The nun story was pretty funny, and the Ushiyama vs Bear fight made me laugh with how he just yeets it.

Shiraishi continues to be the silly little guy of the group and I wouldn’t like it any other way😊.

Good volume, Shirashi's escape adventures were fun and the sequence in the suspicious Ainu village tense.
