A new SLW tradition: the end-of-summer bike ride! What better way to squeeze in a little more summer than to enjoy an outdoor afternoon? Thank you to Peter Rebuffoni and everyone else who organized or attended this event. And thank you to Nora Leverson for designing the invitation graphic! Last year, an SLW crew went biking in Stillwater, and this year they gathered at Minnehaha Falls. Our intrepid bikers enjoyed a scenic view and of course, some refreshments. At SLW, we are committed to creating a work environment with room for growth, a dynamic workplace, family-friendly hours, and a casual environment. We’re a firm that fosters creativity and an incentive to work hard and have fun. #TwinCities #MinnehahaFalls #biking #summer

Back to school! For the second year, Principal Christopher Palmisano is teaching Patent Prosecution at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. He co-teaches the class with Joshua Warminsky, an IP attorney at Cargill. Here are three questions with Chris: 1. What do you enjoy most about teaching? “Early in my patent prosecution career, I benefitted immensely from the instruction of several (very patient) mentors and law school professors. I enjoy teaching because it gives me an opportunity to pay that experience forward and help others who are just starting out and embarking on a new career.” 2. What kinds of topics will you be teaching about? “My class is all about Patent Prosecution. Students learn the mechanics—and some of the art—of preparing, filing, and prosecuting patents before the USPTO. Students spend about half of the semester on a project that includes drafting a full application, submitting it for mock-examination, and then handling multiple rounds of prosecution to try to get their applications allowed. Other SLW attorneys act as ‘examiners’ and prepare rejections for the student applications.” 3, Anything else you would like to share? “I co-teach the class with Josh Warminsky, who is in-house patent counsel at Cargill. Josh’s background is in biochemistry, and mine is in electrical engineering. Throughout the semester, we like to share our different work perspectives and experiences with the students so they can gain some insights into what different pathways in the profession look like. We invite guest speakers to participate as well, including former USPTO examiners and experts in various prosecution topics, to help round out the student experience.” At SLW, Chris’ practice includes patent procurement, technical analyses including freedom-to-operate opinions and validity opinions, and other IP strategy counseling. Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off on September 15. What are some ways to recognize this month? Some ideas from https://bit.ly/4gle8zr include: · Watch a documentary, listen to a podcast, or go to a museum online · Listen to a playlist featuring Hispanic or Latino music · Shop at Latino- or Hispanic-owned businesses or eat at Latino- or Hispanic-owned restaurants · Learn about terminology, such as Hispanic, Latino, Latinx and Latiné. As https://bit.ly/4gle8zr explains, “In short, Latino means from Latin America. Hispanic means from a country whose primary language is Spanish.” Another resource, https://bit.ly/4gtlZux, describes, “Latinx is the gender-neutral alternative to Latina or Latino. It is a term used to describe a diverse group of people who have roots in Latin America. … Latiné is also a gender-neutral form of the word Latino, created by gender non-binary and feminist communities in Spanish-speaking countries." For more resources, check out the National Museum of the American Latino online, at https://s.si.edu/4guyNRk. There you can explore the stories of famous individuals in Latino history, Independence Days, artists, educational resources, and more (https://s.si.edu/4gsbBTN). This month, one of the ways our firm is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is a quiz to study Hispanic and Latino history and geography. Please join us in learning about and honoring our Hispanic and Latino communities. #HispanicHeritageMonth #Diversity #Inclusion #Celebrating
