We asked employees to share why community service is important to them. Here's a community service spotlight on Michelle, senior manager, benefits, in our Syracuse office. I enjoy reading the profiles of fellow employees who volunteer in their communities. They usually describe significant projects that have a tremendous impact on their neighbors, children, veterans, the elderly and ill and more. I admire their selflessness and am impressed by the honors and awards they receive in return for their service. It can be intimidating to think about dedicating so much time to a cause while you try to balance your own family and household responsibilities, but take it from me: there are hundreds of ways that you can share your time, knowledge, skills or just brute labor in small chunks that make a big difference. As much as I would like it to be otherwise, I struggle to devote as much time as I would like to the causes I care about. That’s why I have embraced the volunteer opportunities offered through SRC Cares. I can’t participate in every event, but I sign up for what I can. Over the years, I have made PB&J sandwiches for the Rescue Mission Alliance of Syracuse, NY, assembled cardboard rocking chairs for ARISE Adaptive Design to help schoolchildren with physical disabilities, braided paracord bracelets for those serving in the military, made homemade greeting cards for kids in hospitals and packed food boxes for the Food Bank of Central New York. For SRC’s Season of Giving, I’ve donated canned goods, clothing and toys for the SRC campaigns, and I’ve helped parents select gifts for their children at the Syracuse Salvation Army’s Christmas Bureau Distribution Day. Each of these is a small act and may impact only a few people. By spending an hour here and there, it doesn’t feel like a big effort on my part and doesn’t interrupt my schedule too much. But it adds up over time, and I know that in fact, I’ve helped hundreds of people in Central New York access food and wear a smile at the holidays. I learned from my elderly aunt how it’s the little things that can really matter. She lived in a rural area about a two-hour drive away, and I used to visit once a month or so. My aunt would usually have a list waiting for me. She would need help changing a light bulb that she couldn’t reach, and she was too unsteady to climb on a step stool, the lawn always needed mowing, heavy items needed to be moved up or down the long flight of stairs, or a dish retrieved from the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard. All of these were things I could take care of easily, but if I didn’t do them, they would not have been done. I often think about all the aunts out there who don’t have regular visits from family.
