On my morning dog walks I have been listening to a podcast on AI...this mornings episode was on on ChatGPT hallucinations! The quick summary (I am no expert here) was that it relies on training data BUT it WANTS to give a plausible answer! The podcast suggested "see if you can get ChatGPT to hallucinate!" So when I got home this is what I did! I asked "Who is Bob Sparshatt" ChatGPT said that there may be lots of Bob Sparshatt's and asked for more detail (PS I am not aware of any other Bob or Robert Sparshatt's and certainly not in Australia! So I said "Bob lives in Australia" and this is the answer I got "Bob Sparshatt is a well-known figure in the field of land conservation in Australia. He has been involved in various initiatives related to land management and environmental sustainability. His work often focuses on the preservation of natural habitats and the promotion of sustainable practices" Plausible...but not me! I showed my wife and she said, I wonder what is says about me, so in the SAME ChatGPT session I asked "Who is Libby Sparshatt" "Libby Sparshatt is an Australian conservationist and environmental advocate. She is recognized for her efforts in wildlife protection and land conservation. Her work often involves promoting sustainable practices and protecting natural habitats." mmmm....she works in Superannuation and has for over 20 years So I asked...just in case there is a Sparshatt I don't know who works in conservation "List conservationists with the surname Sparshatt" and ChatGPT told me "The prominent conservationists with the surname Sparshatt are Bob Sparshatt and Libby Sparshatt. They are known for their work in environmental protection and land management in Australia." Looks like I have created a new career for both my wife and I!
"I'm not aware of a conservation expert named Sparshatt in Australia, or globally, within the field of environmental conservation. It's possible that they may be involved in conservation work in a less public or recognized capacity, or perhaps their work is more recent and hasn't been widely documented yet."
I’ve always been a massive fan of your work protecting the penguins of the sub-tropical rainforests of Victoria and New South Wales…
Apparently my chatgtp is less creative. It knew both you and Libby. Wonder if anyone else tested this to see what it said and retrained it. Weird !!!
That's funny but scary at the same time....just goes to show you the data and sources are very questionable when using these tools
Really interesting post Bob, that’s crazy! I know of people using ChatGPT for PR for example I wonder how many people validate ‘facts’ now off to do the same on my name, and there’s not loads of us!!
That’s crazy Bob! I’m going to try it! (Things is I am job searching at the moment, and I know the suggestions I get from AI on here are complete off! Which makes me wonder on the flip side, if people are using this to filter out candidates, they are losing good people! Tom Brown worth a read!
I'm no massive fan of gen AI, but I do quite like Copilot for basic stuff.

1wCongrats on your new career path! 😀If you're using ChatGPT 4.0, you can actually customise its personality. By adjusting the custom settings, you can define it to act like 'Bob Sparshatt,' specifying things like your role, key responsibilities, stakeholders, skills, communication style, and preferred vocabulary. From there, whenever you search or ask something, the responses will be tailored to your needs, making it much more personalised and relevant than the usual generic replies.
