Routine oil changes, but make it glam 💅 Patrice Banks, owner of Girls Auto Clinic, found herself frustrated by the lack of female mechanics when she needed help with her car. “I couldn’t find a female mechanic, so I had to learn,” said Banks. She enrolled in night classes at a technical school. “I was the only girl with a bunch of boys, 19-year-old boys,” she says. “That was interesting. I was 31.” She worked in a few Philadelphia garages for free while she completed her training, and in 2016 she opened the Girls Auto Clinic repair center in Upper Darby, PA, which is staffed by all female mechanics. To make the shop more appealing and convenient for women, she also opened an adjoining manicure-pedicure and blowout salon, called Clutch Beauty Bar, where you can wait while your repairs are done. Today, she empowers women to navigate the male-dominated world of car repairs, one wrench turn at a time. Her goal is to foster a community of what she calls “sheCANics.” Banks teaches free hands-on workshops at the shop every month. “I want women to own their cars, and owning it means knowing it,” she says. Breaking stereotypes and blazing the trail for women in the auto industry! 👏

Apparently one or two men have not read the responses of the women here - men mechanics tend to overcharge women. In any event, so what if women would like to support women in business? And so what if women would like to be auto-mechanics too? In my mother’s childhood village, there were some sisters who worked on cars side by side with their father. This was in the 1950s.

No one cries louder than men about discrimination when something is “all female” 🙄

Patrice Banks is a true trailblazer! Her journey from frustrated car owner to founder of Girls Auto Clinic is nothing short of inspiring. Not only has she empowered herself by learning a traditionally male-dominated trade, but she’s also creating opportunities for other women to do the same. The concept of blending auto repair with a beauty salon is a genius move, breaking down barriers and transforming the car repair experience into something more inclusive and welcoming. Patrice’s vision of fostering a community of “sheCANics” speaks volumes about her commitment to empowering women through knowledge and self-reliance. Kudos to her for redefining the auto industry and encouraging women to own their cars—and their confidence! #WomenInBusiness #SheCANics #BreakingBarriers #Empowerment

This is amazing!!! I am so grateful that my father taught me the basics about working on my car and using tools...check my oil, keep my tires inflated, top off my fluids, change a tire, change the air filter, change the headlight/taillight, keep my spare tire in shape and be prepared before long drives. I felt more confident when taking my car in for new tires or repairs. And I love that she is teaching women all of this! 🙌🏼

From a very young age my dad taught me the basics: know how to change oil and tires. My first driving lesson: a manual car. He taught me to drive his manual car in the worst conditions: after a snowstorm. He made me go up hills. What my dad did definitely served me well not only when I had a flat in the middle of the highway, but in any situation behind the wheels. To all the dads who teach their daughters about cars or anything that is perceived "male"-dominated, I take my hat off. Breaking stereotypes all the way! 🚀

Some of these replies remind me that JD Vance supporters are part of LinkedIn, too. These guys simply don’t understand the bond of sisterhood, the greater trust women have in dealing with other women—which btw, is not a trait exclusive to women. Minority groups of all kinds experience this too, including the minority group of fragile, insecure men.

How many times have you been reluctant to just go and get your car checked at the mechanics knowing or having that feeling that “oh my gosh they’re going to find something is it real or is it not”. At that point, you research yourself to death and then search for friends that can confirm or deny what you heard is true. all of your family, spouse, and friends (mainly guys unfortunately) 🫤. Patrice Banks,——This is absolutely AMAZING hats off to you ! Now you wear the crown 👑 I love it love it love it !! where do I sign up to support this concept nationwide!!!! ???🤔

I love this idea, but I'm actually curious if it's legal to advertise an "all female" auto shop. I can't imagine a place stating they only hire men being allowed to stay in business. How are you able to swing that, or does no one even care? Also, I'm curious, what percent of your clients skew female vs. male? Is it 50-50? 80-20?

How about this? You offer a discount to any women who comes to your shop. This way women have a place they can trust and also get a good price for their repairs (the savings could help offset the cost for the manicures and blowouts). It might be a bit sexist, but the men have been taking advantage of women (not mention any other person who doesn't know everything about vehicles) in auto mechanic world for too many years. My son is going in the trade right now and I pitched that to my wife last night, so clearly, I am not the only one!
