Global Health Advocates brief series examines the #TeamEurope approach in the EU-AU health partnership and identifies 4️⃣ key elements to ensure the success of the regional health TEIs: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJTu5YA2 📍 Team Europe will need to ensure that its health priorities are in line with those of African partners. What we found is that there was little evidence so far suggesting partners were meaningfully engaged in the design of the #TEIs. 📍 Team Europe must be able to allocate sufficient financial resources to deliver on its commitments, in a coordinated and effective way. More consistency and complementarity are needed between different instruments & policies in pursuit of health objectives. 📍 Team Europe must communicate and share timely information about the initiatives and their impact, to demonstrate the added value of this approach. Vague commitments lead to challenges in tracking and holding individual team members accountable. 📍 Team Europe must be able to keep global health high on its agenda, with #equity at its core. In particular, concrete actions are needed for the EU to demonstrate its commitment to partnership with Africa on health! During the national population conference of South Africa last year, I proposed a significant idea regarding the increasing aging population among BRICS nations, particularly South Africa. While it was intriguing to note the minister's discussion on this matter, I found the proposed ideas and solutions focusing on Sick Care and Palliative Care approaches concerning. I believe that these approaches may pose significant economic challenges at both micro and macro levels. In my view, addressing biological aging through self-care is crucial, as everyone has the right to healthy longevity. It is essential to establish regulations and policies that govern consumer behavior and foster enabling environments to promote healthy longevity for all, not just the elite. By prioritizing natural approaches and fostering genuine human connections, we can contribute effectively to our society. We need to extend conversations like this to other African countries. This year as we bring The International Longevity Summit Africa to Lagos Nigeria, we encourage policy makers, and industry leaders to get involve. 21st of March marks #humanRightsDay. If I'm to contextualize this in history, this is the day of the #Sharpevillemassacre in which up to 10 000 black people marched against anti-black pass laws. Unfortunately, 69 people lost their lives on this day including 10 children at the hands of the police, some were shot in the back and left paralyzed for life. I mention this so we do not forget the actual history on why the 21st of March exists and also that #healthinequties have and continue to plague anyone who is ever 'Othered' at any moment in time in history. Now as we celebrate and reflect on #HumanRightsDay2024 in a world that is still grappling with whose life matters and is worth saving as categorically based on manufactured distinctions like race, class, gender, sexual orientation, geographical location, migration status etc. that have real lived everyday impact. South Africa is taking steps to address the ever growing #healthinequties gaps particularly when it comes to accessing quality healthcare which is a basic human right by introducing National health Insurance #NHI as one approach. My concern remains whose #humanrights will this #NHI bill uphold if and when its signed and effected into law. #NHISummit #HumanRightsDay2024 #healthequity

While many organisations in the global north claim to support locally-led development, the reality often falls short due to donor practices and inadequate investment in capacity building. However, even small, intentional changes can profoundly support researchers in low-income countries. Prof. Salome Charalambous, Aurum’s Group Chief Health Officer, emphasises the critical role of local involvement in identifying research questions and designing studies to ensure that findings are actionable and relevant. Local experts, with their deep connections to government stakeholders and understanding of local needs, are better positioned to communicate the implications of research effectively. 🌐 Her Excellency Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Federal Councillor of the Swiss Confederation calls for the spirit of Geneva, the cradle of multilateralism to solve challenges facing the global community. Three take aways from her opening speak at the World Health Assembly this morning; 1️⃣ "Finding solutions and having a global and efficient response requires a widened international solidarity, strong multi-lateralism and universal leadership that also means that we need to have dialogue and be open and be open to listen to others. 2️⃣ The WHO plays a unique role which is essential as a global agency for health. It represents a multi-lateral essential solution to the world's problems. We live in an interconnected world where geographic borders are ever more permeable and the challenges that we face are on a universal level. 3️⃣ Today more than ever we need this space for discussion in Geneva, the cradle of multi-lateralism where we will work on collective solutions to the challenges. Multi-lateralism embodies the conviction that our global problems can be resolved in an equitable and efficient manner when we share our resources and co-operate with an open spirit.  #africa #health #healthcare #publichealth #healthcare #multilateralism #globalhealth #geneva #switzerland #WHA77 #leniashwenda #medicines4africa

Cross-border challenges may persist, but the region also exemplifies how countries can collaborate in addressing transboundary issues through joint research, resource-sharing, & resilient health systems. Active collaboration in regional partnerships & international organizations will amplify the region’s role in shaping the collective global response to emerging threats. And fostering purposeful #partnership is crucial for #medicaleducation, #healthtraining, & development of #healthtechnologies : exemplified by WAH Foundation cross-border impact exchange with SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute KK Women's and Children's Hospital in partnership with the Cambodian local government health ministry since 2012. Greater Asian leadership will lead to more equitable uplift in the region : that in turn, can shape a more unified world, better prepared to tackle the next pandemic collectively on a global scale.

Advancing Africa’s future through a homegrown conference experience The 3rd International Conference of Public Health in Africa (CPHIA), held in December 2023 in Lusaka Zambia was a vibrant symphony of homegrown expertise. African researchers, policymakers, and health professionals took center stage, sharing groundbreaking research, forging innovative partnerships, and shaping the continent's public health agenda. This wasn't about outsiders prescribing solutions; it was about Africans owning their narrative, crafting their own roadmap to a healthier future. CPHIA 2023 is just one example, but it serves as a powerful model for the future of African development. For decades, conferences, meetings, summits about Africa have been held away from its soil, gatherings on its issues, opportunities, and futures have been held in distant capitals, far removed from the lived realities of the continent. This practice fosters a disconnect between discussions and solutions and fosters a one-sided narrative, marginalizes African voices, and hinders the development of solutions tailored to the continent's unique realities. In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the immense potential within Africa, prompting a shift in focus towards harnessing homegrown solutions and fostering regional collaboration. One key avenue that has gained prominence in this endeavor is the hosting of conferences within the continent itself.
