As we celebrate Labor Day, it’s important to reflect on the significance of hard work and dedication in shaping our society. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, 'No man can be a good citizen unless he has a wage more than sufficient to cover the bare cost of living.' This reminds us that fair wages and decent working conditions are fundamental to the dignity of work. Today, let’s honor the contributions of every worker, from those in the boardroom to those on the factory floor. It’s the collective effort that fuels innovation, drives economic growth, and builds a stronger community. Here’s to the relentless spirit of the workforce—Happy Labor Day!

🗓️ Greetings of May Day to dear colleagues, fellow professionals, and everyone whose hard work and contributions are taking the economy forward! 🔎 Let's take this opportunity to revisit the origins of May Day, and why it is imperative to uphold its values: ℹ️ Labor Day in the United States and Canada has its roots in New York City in 1882. It began as a day off to honor workers' contributions, organized by a union to give them a rare rest and recognition day. ℹ️ This celebration emerged amidst the challenges of the Industrial Revolution, marked by demands for fair wages, an end to child labor, and the right to unionize. However, labor unions faced resistance from companies, leading to violent clashes like the Haymarket Square Riot of 1886. ℹ️ On May 1st of that year, hundreds of thousands of workers nationwide went on strike, demanding better working conditions and shorter working hours. The strike was peaceful at first, but on May 4th, a bomb exploded at a labor demonstration in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, killing several people and injuring many others. Labor Day became a federal holiday in the US in 1894. However, significant labor reforms, such as the eight-hour workday and the prohibition of child labor, were not realized until the Great Depression era under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a continuation of the essence of Labor Day. 👉🏻 It is essential to pay homage and celebrate May Day in our times to fully appreciate the sacrifices of the rioters that led to the many benefits that we enjoy at work today: ✅ the eight-hour workday ✅ benefits and pensions ✅ labor rights 💡 May 1st is now a day for workers to demand better conditions, fair wages, and labor rights worldwide. It's marked by parades, rallies, and events celebrating the achievements of the labor movement and advocating for further improvements in working conditions. ⏫ May the spirit of May Day mark greater professional fulfillment for us all! #history #mayday #laborday

Celebrate Labor Day! What started out, in 1882, as a day of unifying union workers and a plan to reduce work time, Labor Day has evolved to be something much more meaningful. Each year I celebrate: 1. The vast and varied types of employment opportunities that exist in the United States for so many with different education levels, interests and backgrounds. The opportunities are there for those who engage and are willing to work hard. 2. The impressive number of employers, large and small, who thrive in our economic structure and offer employment, engagement and security to their workforce. Of course, it is through these businesses that we can build economic growth and prosperity. 3. The employee. I celebrate the thousands of leaders, partners and team members I’ve had the privilege to “take the hill” with over my career. It is through diverse teams that we can grow the economy, build an enriched society and be a spectacularly unique nation. May everyone make the most of their day off by celebrating the contributions of many workers and the resilience of every working American. #LaborDay #hardwork #workers #awesomeemployees #makeadifference

Today we celebrate the social and economic achievements of working Americans. While we enjoy this small extension of our weekend and the last moments of the summer season, let us not forget the origin of Labor Day and why it is celebrated. The history of Labor Day begins with the Labor Movement in the early 19th century at the peak of the Industrial Revolution. The average American worker worked 12 hour days 7 days a week under harsh working conditions, and unfair wages. Illegal in some states, children as young as five years old did backbreaking work in factories, mines, and mills. To address these issues, labor unions began to organize strikes and rallies, advocating for workers’ rights. On September 5, 1882, thousands of workers in New York City made history by marching in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Organized by the Central Labor Union, they walked from City Hall to Union Square to show solidarity to other workers and demand better conditions and pay. Twelve years later in 1894, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a national holiday to honor the relentless spirit and perseverance of American workers. As you fire up the grill or relax by the pool for the last hurrah of the summer, remember the hard-working men and women who paved the way for us to celebrate this day and fought for our rights as working Americans. Happy Labor Day from Vetere & Associates - we celebrate you, the American worker. #happylaborday #laborday #vetere&associates #va #endofsummer #holiday

Great article to read!!
I had the great honor of paying tribute to labor movement visionary Mary Kay Henry in The Nation, in a piece I co-authored with visionary organizer, Ai-jen Poo. Mary Kay, the first woman president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), provided indispensable support to fast food workers and their transformational Fight for $15 and a Union. Her bold vision and grounded strategy helped deliver massive wins that have changed workers' lives for the better. Her leadership produced many lessons that the labor movement and progressives should build on moving forward. All of us can learn from her remarkable example – read more at the link below. https://lnkd.in/eZ6vMyyX
