At the European Conference on Air and Missile Defence in Rome, #Leonardo's Co-General Manager Lorenzo Mariani spoke about weapon systems’ prospects, underlining the need to overcome the European defence industry’s structural weaknesses, starting with the following actions:
✔ Significantly increase the level of common European investments
✔ Promote industrial consolidation
✔ Incentivise industrial cooperation in programs and technology
✔ Promote the acquisition of common goods and services through mechanisms that facilitate joint European procurement
✔ Simplify and harmonize the rules for acquisition and management of common programmes
✔ Strengthen the creation of truly transnational supply chains
✔ Ensure predictable timelines and extend the time horizons of procurement processes
Lorenzo Mariani concluded underscoring the importance of public acceptance: “We often forget that not everyone has the same feelings about Defence and Security. Common public perception is, with the exception of some countries, that war is far, that the risk of having a real conflict in one’s respective country is low. The negative effects of a far conflict are not immediately perceived. Helping people have a fuller understanding should be part of a joint plan between Government and industries to better explain how global security affects their lives and how we should be taking care of threats at the global level.”
We look forward to welcoming Fiona to our conference to speak to everyone on this subject - it's going to be a great event 😊
