The "New" Trick Families are Using to Lower College Tuition Bills is not so new! Jeffrey Selingo wrote a great article in "New York Magazine" about how merit aid increasingly favors middle and upper middle class families in America. We have seen this trend increasing over the last 20 years, in our work with students and families applying to college. Our students routinely are offered merit scholarships ranging from $25,000 to $35,000 a year off the full tuition price. My son was offered a $20,000 annual tuition discount at his intended school back in 2009, and he had a "B" GPA. The key was that he had very high SAT scores! High SAT scores (and yes, scores do matter again) = BIG merit scholarships at many schools, not every school, but many high quality, in demand schools. Our average SAT student sees a 200 point increase in their SAT scores, when following our program and process. Investing in SAT prep can reap huge financial rewards over the 4 years a student will be attending college. College admissions in America today is a very complicated process, and knowing how to effectively navigate this process is critical to having a good outcome (both in terms of finding a school that is a good fit for your child, and having them earn lucrative merit scholarships). “I got a scholarship for college and can’t wait to get it in 2034!” The FAFSA (Federal Application for Federal Student Aid) is a bit behind! Like, big time. When a student applies to college and gets accepted it’s a day of jubilation A day of 187 grams of added sugar in my latte kind of day because they did it! Not this year. About this time every year Students that have applied to college for next year start to get letters that show the estimated: 👉 Scholarships 👉 Grants 👉 Loans they’ll receive to pay for college. To say it’s a vital piece of the college admissions process is an understatement Not this year though. Because of delay after delay These letters won’t ARRIVE to colleges until MARCH. That means students won’t get them till well after that. May 1st is a red letter date for students to let their college choice know if they’re coming in the fall. It’s deposit day for a college. They typically wait for the FAFSA folks to tell them how much federal student aide they’ll grant a student. They then put all this together in a ‘package’ and present it to their prospective student. It’s a harmonious relationship and usually works beautifully until they wanna take a break. Where does that leave a student and their family? In a lurch. Big time. Making a decision on which college to attend is a big enough decision Doing this without know how much you’ll have to pay and with such little time to decide? You get the idea. These are the kinds of things out of your control as a parent. There are so make things IN your control. Don’t let a form like the FAFSA dictate if your kid will or will not attend college. Instead? Take as many college classes IN high school as possible. Kittleberger believes college isn't always a good return on investment for financial stability. He encourages his kids to explore alternative education paths and learn financial responsibility. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Bobby Kittleberger, a 37-year-old father and business owner in Staunton, Virginia. Business Insider has verified his income with documentation. The following has been edited for length and clarity. I have six children between the ages of 5 and 11, and I've told them I won't pay for college except in very limited circumstances. I graduated with a computer science degree, but it's irrelevant to my work. I'm actively encouraging my kids to consider other options and how much ROI they'll get from college. For me to pay for their tuition, they'd need to pursue a career that actually requires higher education I'll pay for their tuition if they want to be something like a doctor or a lawyer. I'll decide on a case-by-case basis. One of my daughters has expressed interest in being a veterinarian, which I'd want to support financially and otherwise. If I paid for tuition, it would be a gift without strings attached. I've actively discussed this with my four older kids in the past year, and they've responded positively. One of the most interesting responses I've gotten from my kids is asking how they can make money now. They're also more interested in my work and curious about what career paths require a degree. My decision isn't based on how much money we make Our household income — which includes the income from my business, my wife's income from her job in education, as well as investments and other sources — totals in the six figures, which is good money for where we live in middle Virginia. My reasoning also doesn't involve trying to make them more financially responsible. Not paying for college might force them to be more financially responsible, but only if they choose — or try — to pay for college themselves. I want them to learn to be financially responsible and viable by earning money, with or without college. My reasoning for considering other options is primarily ROI If the goal of college is to set you up to earn a living and be financially stable, it's not guaranteed to accomplish that goal. You might want to go to college for the experience, but I don't see much value in that. I think it's important for children to move away from their parents, but the college environment's ability to teach this is overrated. Only interacting with your peers and having a pared-down schedule with large chunks of free time and meals constantly provided, without everyday bills like utilities...
