Agreed. I think filling a position is more about finding an individual who brings things to your company that you can’t teach like critical thinking, work ethic, and drive and then training them on what you can teach. If you have a potential job candidate that may not have all the experience or qualifications you are looking for but they are willing to give you 100% and want to be mentored and molded, those are the employees that turn into long term leaders and company assets. I’ll be starting a new job here in a few days that I’m very excited about. It’s a similar job to my last position but a completely new competitive industry. I feel privileged to have been given a new opportunity when on paper I may not have been the most active candidate. I feel that my new employer saw my potential in the interview and was willing to mentor me in a new industry and shape me into a more versatile employee. I understand that this concept does not work 100% across the board, but I do feel like a lot of good candidates get in passed over when a few weeks of training could get them ready to be a strategic force in your company. Find someone who you want to represent your company and your brand, then train them to be the kind of worker that will be successful in your field.

Trust and communication go hand-in-hand. If you don’t communicate, whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent, people will not trust you. And once trust is broken, it’s difficult to rebuild. Additionally, in the absence of communication, people make up their own stories; and as humans, we naturally go right to the negative or worst-case scenarios. Do yourself a favor and take the time to talk with people instead of hiding behind excuses or shying away from the difficult conversations—you may be surprised by what can come of it.
