🌍🚀 The latest study ‘United in Science’ of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) with the contribution of the UNOOSA is out! The study brought together the latest climate science-related updates from key partner organisations and highlights the critical role of geospatial technology for a more sustainable future. 3 key takeaways: 📡 The study highlights how advances in satellite technology and Earth Observation have greatly improved the frequency and accuracy of environmental monitoring, climate predictions, and weather forecasts.    🤝 In order to leverage space-based Earth data for global climate goals, the paper advocates for increased international cooperation, creative finance and optimizing satellite technology for meteorological, water, and environmental applications through enhanced governance and public-private collaborations. 🌐 Tracking important climate variables like ocean temperatures, aerosols, and hydrological patterns depends heavily on high-resolution satellite data. 🇺🇳 UNOOSA and the International Telecommunication Union meet at the ITU #SpaceSustainability Forum. Here are the key takeaways from Director Aarti Holla-Maini‘s remarks: 1️⃣ All eyes are on the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space to deliver global space governance. COPUOS has developed 65 years of treaties, principles, resolutions, and guidelines. 📜 They‘re only words on paper unless implemented. 2️⃣ It’s not realistic to expect global consensus on a new multilateral treaty that has buy-in from all nations. However, the Guidelines for the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space (#LTSGuidelines) are binding when implemented into national legislation and regulation - we must support States in achieving consistent implementation. 🌐 3️⃣ #UNOOSA, as Secretariat to the inter-governmental COPUOS, is working to develop a common understanding of different aspects of space sustainability. 🌍 4️⃣ This starts with supporting the establishment of national space laws & policies and helping States understand what the different components of space sustainability actually mean. What does data-sharing mean? What data is it? How do operators act on conjunction assessments? We need to level the playing field in terms of knowledge & understanding around such matters so States can take effective decisions. 💡 5️⃣ UNOOSA has been collecting Guideline B.1 data since 2019 - now looking at how to operationalize it as a core component of Space Traffic Coordination. 🛰️ 6️⃣ Concerning Active Debris Removal and On-Orbit Servicing - working with nations to identify space objects that can be deorbited and creating the conditions to scale the market for ADR and for industry to invest more in technological development. 📈 7️⃣ Not reinventing the wheel - Member States have solutions for guidelines for ADR that COPUOS can review and expand on in line with LTS Guideline D.2 'Investigate and consider new measures to manage the space debris population in the long-term.' 🌌 8️⃣ UNOOSA is taking a pragmatic and holistic approach to advancing space sustainability using all avenues available. Through COPUOS to develop new guidelines and mechanisms for coordination, through capacity-building, and delivering services to nations that support implementation of what has already been agreed and have shared political will behind it. 🤝 #COPUOS2024
