We started our blog series, ‘The Aerodynamics of Overtaking’ as a way to look at one of Bramble CFD’s features – the automation of testing ‘car following car’ models. Using this feature, we compared the overtaking aerodynamics of two generations of Ferrari F1 cars; the 1978 312T and the 2016 SF16. Particularly looking at how each cars aerodynamics is affected as they approach a lead car. Today, we're delving deep into the heart of Formula 1 aerodynamics, exploring the revolutionary changes that swept through the sport in the 2022 season. At the forefront of this transformation lies the intricate redesign of the car's floor, a pivotal component where the intricate dance of airflow dynamics dictates on-track performance. The 2022 season marked a monumental shift in Formula 1, characterized by a comprehensive overhaul of aerodynamic regulations. The aim? To produce closer racing, increase potential for overtaking, and offer teams a wider array of strategic options. Central to these changes was the meticulous redesign of the car's floor, a critical area where the complex interplay of airflow dynamics holds sway. Enter the Venturi tunnels, a groundbreaking feature intricately integrated into the car's floor. Inspired by the Venturi effect, these tunnels serve as conduits for airflow acceleration and pressure reduction, essential for maximizing downforce generation. Positioned strategically at the front of the sidepods and precisely aligned with the cockpit opening, the Venturi tunnels boast a series of turning vanes, akin to upright fences, guiding airflow into the tunnels with precision.
