WOW, “… not my fault, …I trusted others, …others were wrong, too, …I’m the scapegoat”. She misses the truth of leadership. Leaders are the scapegoat. They are responsible of the performance of their organisation. Its performance, failings, and perceptions. They get the glory, the accolades, the paycheck – and the responsibility! The CEO of Optus stepped down following data breaches and widespread outages. CEO CommBank for the banks non-compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. Bank of Queensland, Telstra, Vocus, a parade at Australia Post. CEO Barclay’s for reputational damage, CEO Volkswagen for the emissions scandal. The list is almost endless, the actions swift. She was moved sideways, given a sinecure at Defence until the Royal Commission handed down its findings, when she then resigned because her position became untenable. It is astounding that it took a Royal Commission, and a 15-month investigation by the APSC to find that she transgressed the values of the public service. She simply failed in her job. Robodebt failed hundreds of thousands of people relying on the public sector. It did immeasurable damage to the public sectors reputation. The government, the Secretaries and the APSC, in avoiding action, also failed the tens of thousands of public servants who they lead. The responsibility of a leader is to deliver the organisations outcomes. Their obligation is to those who are giving their all. Hiding behind pseudo-fairness and process to avoid an uncomfortable decision with someone who clearly hasn't performed is being unfair to both the public and the public service. Responsibility and accountability matter little if there is no consequence for failure.
