Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

I was not familiar with COM:PRP, thanks. While interesting I don't think it is a fair characterization of my arguments.

I was told about Mr Godwin, years ago, but was informed he did not have any experience in IP law, merely corporate law. Maybe what I was told, years ago was true, and he has some experience with IP law now. In any case I have been suggesting, for years, the WMF have a lawyer, or lawyers, with experience in IP law offer informed opinion on this issue. Mr Godwin's expertise is of no value in addressing this issue if no one requests his opinion, or requests he offer the names of lawyers who can address this issue.

Are you on the WMF Board? Are you in a position to suggest this issue be put on Mr Godwin's agenda? 01:59, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm not affiliated with WMF beyond my basic editing at English Wikipedia and here on Commons; I'm just another editing drone. :-) My understanding, though, is that the Foundation folks are generally quite approachable and things are pretty informal. I would note, however, if you haven't heard, that you read this Wikinews article regarding Godwin's departure from the WMF.
By the way, I appear to have been laboring under a misconception regarding Godwin's background; I'm sorry if that gave you the wrong idea. Commons isn't Censored , but providing free webshosting for adult actresses to me doesn't strike me as an obvious educational purposes. Hi Mendaliv, Thanks for taking part in this photo challenge. Unfortunately, I think that your photograph - which is a very nice one - File:Red-tailed hawk at SF Twin Peaks.jpg is not really meeting the theme which is "birds in their habitat" (there is no habitat on your picture). Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello Mendaliv, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. re: edit counts

your count & comparison of my edit-count on here 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 is incorrect. you will find that my present activity-level per anum is at most ~10% of previous "peak"; probably less. either you have mis-counted, or you didn't make the effort to count it at all & you simply lied in your comment.

& i did not "retire", i quit.

i have ceased to "work" on this project. i'll make an edit when i feel like it, if i feel like it; but i no longer feel any "obligation" to contribute to commons. somebody else can do the "work", & keep things running, & "care" about what is happening on this project, & think "long term" about what's going on with wikimedia & their projects; it is not my problem anymore. "tl,dr" - my level of commitment = 0

They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
