Updates to Filter Results Gadget

We're introducing updates to the Filter Results gadget in Jira dashboards. We’ve started rolling out the updates this week and expect the rollout to finish in about a month. Once fully rolled out, all instances of this gadget will display issues as they appear in the Issue Navigator. These updates provide additional functionality, better performance, and a more accessible experience.

The changes are only visual, and no work is needed on your end.

Your data in these gadgets is safe. The update involves visual changes only and does not require any data migration, ensuring your data, configuration preferences, and gadget data remain unchanged. You may need to make manual visual updates to fit your use case.

Stay tuned for similar changes to the “Assigned to me”, “Issues in progress”, “Voted issues”, and “Watched issues” gadgets in the upcoming months.

What’s new?

Highlighted features

The three notable feature additions of the update are the visual separation of columns, resizable columns, and inline editing.

Separation of columns

The columns are now separated by lines to improve readability and distinguish sections.

The old Filter Results gadget had no separation between columns.

The new Filter Results gadget has linear separation between each column.

Resizable columns

You will now be able to resize columns while editing the dashboard.

To resize columns for the gadget:

  1. Select Edit to edit the dashboard.
  2. Select More actions (…) > Configure on the gadget.

  3. Hover over a dividing line for the column, then select and drag the line left or right to the desired width.

  4. Select Save on the gadget.

  5. Select Done to stop editing the dashboard.

Alternatively, you can:

  1. Select Edit to edit the dashboard.
  2. Select More actions (...) > Configure on the gadget.
  3. Hover over the column that you want to resize, then select the vertical More actions (…) > Resize column.

  4. Use the slider to resize the column to the desired width.

  5. Select Save on the slider menu.
  6. Select Done to stop editing the dashboard.

HoverEtc.gif

Dashboard viewers will also be able to resize the columns, but their changes will not be saved to the dashboard. For column resizing to be saved, you must be editing the dashboard, and follow one of the two methods above.

Inline editing of fields (Summary)

In the old gadget, to change the summary of a ticket, you had to click the “More actions” dropdown.

We now allow inline editing of Summary when viewing a dashboard.

Sum1.pngSum2.png

Inline editing of fields (Status)

Similarly, we now allow inline editing of status.

InlineStat.png

Inline editing of fields (Assignee)

Similarly (again), we now allow inline editing of assignee.

Additional updates

In addition to the three highlighted upgrades, the following changes have been made.

Configure columns and preview data

You can now preview the first five rows while configuring the gadget. You can also configure the columns directly in the preview.

Preview1.pngPreview2.png

Save sort direction

Previously, you could save the sort direction without opening the configuration settings for the gadget. Now, you’ll need to configure the gadget to save the sort direction.

To save sort direction for a column in the gadget:

  1. Select Edit to edit the dashboard.

  2. Select More actions (…) > Configure on the gadget.

  3. Hover over the column then select Sort (arrow icon) until the sort direction changes to the one you want. Alternatively, you could select the vertical More actions for the column then select your sort direction from the menu.

  4. Select Save.

Search for a filter

To simplify the search experience, we’ve removed the advanced search option and improved the overall filter dropdown. Now, the dropdown is split into three categories: “Starred,” “Recently viewed,” and “All filters.”

Tip: When searching for a filter, use quotation marks around your search to get an exact match. For example, instead of searching for My Filter, try searching for "My Filter".

Extra gadget refresh options

Before, you only had one refresh option to update the gadget every 15 minutes. We now provide more interval options. You can even set a custom interval by typing a number into the field. Custom intervals are always in minutes.

Reset column sorting

You can now set the column sort back to the state defined by the saved filter.

To remove sorting from the gadget:

  1. Select More actions (…) > Configure on the gadget.

  2. Select More actions (…) on the column and choose “Remove column”.

  3. Select Save.

  4. The sort field resets to the default Filter sort.

For example, this gadget is currently sorted by the "Status" field.

ColumnSort1.png

After removing the "Status" column, the sort field resets to the default filter sort.

Extra information in cells

Columns (such as “Priority”) previously showed only icons, but now they include descriptors (for example, “Medium”).ExtraInfo.png

Great updates! These improvements are definitely timely.

Looking forward to this being rolled out and to future updates on other gadgets 💪

We just got that update, and we hate it.

When you got more than three columns, you need to horizontally scroll to see all the content.

It's screwing up the layout we have on our screens. We need to see all the content in one view.

Previously, you could see all the content immediately.

Is there any plans for improvements? I feel the dashboard feature gets less and less attention.

This new GRID view should be configurable that administrator can have an option to turn it on or off in selectable dashboard, or it can be configurable in the gadget itself.   This feature may be good for some but not all.   Features should always be flexable.

This update just broke all our three column dashboards and is greatly impacting our work.
Even trying to adjust column widths does not help much as minimum width is not that small.
Previously there was just and icon for issue type and priority, now these two columns take up half of the available space.
Also previously the column width was auto-adjusted, which is great for column key, where key width could be different. Now we need to adjust it as small as possible, but when we exceed 1000 issues we will need to adjust it again and then again for 10000 issues... and do this across all filter results widgets in all dozens of dashboards.

After this update the filter results no longer fits all of the 'columns' - each time we load the dashboard we need to manually resize the columns to see the content. After using the resize column and save feature the columns seem to go back to the default size again. Also some columns won't go small enough (e.g. the issue type).

The other changes are nice, but the downgrade of not being able to easily see all the data overwhelms any of the benefits for us. Some dashboards are for historic review - and editing is not required.

Hope you can do better before you apply this to all of the other widgets :-|

Would prefer to be able to choose the old UI/behavior when editing the widget (e.g. where editing issues is not required).

... also we don't need the full priority name, is there any way to show just the priority icon? This is a waste of space.

We also don't like this new update. It broke all the dashboards and now we have to manually adjust them. And even then, they won't be the same as before.

If possible, we would like to see an option to revert back to the previous view or as you call it the "old experience" as it was working as intended.

Also, as many already suggested, nobody needs full priority name or super wide "Type" column that only has an icon.

Please, fix this.

In previous versions, we could check the time by hovering over the update date of the filter gadget, but this is no longer possible.

Maybe inline editing can be helpful, but we don't need it.

Regarding the new view (with scroll bar in case of using many columns) it is a HUGE DISADVANTAGE for our business. We use several dashboards with this gadget and now we can not see all the content at once without scrolling. Resizing the columns ist not enough as the headlines disappear.

Sorry, but this update gains our effort to do our business and it is not thought to the end!

The navigation through gadgets now is more complicated. It would be nice to have an option to switch to the old view. Also there is problem in some gadgets they no longer display a filter results but still show one after click on issues link.

Hello all,

Thank you for your comments. Many of them concern column width / resizing. We’ve updated the "Resizable columns" section to be more clear.

We understand that these changes are have been negatively impacting your work flow. Please feel free to book in time (using Calendly link below) to dig into them further.

The new updates are quite frustrating.  I prefer no gridlines and the automatic sizing for columns based on the character length, but to have the option to set the number of characters would have been a better option.  Of course these are just my preferences and opinion, as it is now difficult for me to see multiple filters in columns on one page.  More difficult to track my unassigned queue, assigned to me and then my resolved tickets from within the past 24hrs.  More visual options (gridlines/no gridlines, column sizing and titles) and less limitations if you can make those changes, that would be great.
