Confrontations with streaming platforms

edit

CEO of Because Music Emmanuel de Buretel has spoken publicly on a number of occasions about tensions between artists, independent labels such as Because, and emergent platforms such as YouTube, Spotify and Tiktok, which rely on music for their success.[20]

In July 2023, Because issued a DMCA takedown notice against the open-source YouTube player NewPipe, temporarily resulting in their host website being removed from Google Search results.[21] The DMCA notice would later be rescinded with no further comment, and the website's search status was restored.

In 2024, de Buretal criticised the Tiktok platform for the use of music without properly renumerating artists. Writing in Le Monde, he said;

“As players in the music market… we cannot accept that the consumption and disfigurement of works should be built around an algorithm that thrives on the backs of thousands of employees, craftsmen and artists around the world, and… by actively participating in the creation of a platform that feeds on artistic creation by destroying it..."[22]
