  1. (transitive) To perform a task rapidly, often unexpectedly.
    • 1975 December 27, Ginny Vida, quotee, “Ideas Needed”, in Gay Community News, volume 3, number 26, page 2:
      The networks tell us that they are open to shows with gay themes and gay characters, but don't get the scripts from their writers and producers. We've decided to test out their good intentions by regularly firing off story ideas to the producers of individual series.
    No sooner had I replied to his first question, than he fired off another one.
    When I had read the article, I immediately fired off a letter to the editor.
  2. (transitive) To discharge from a firearm.
    The nervous soldier fired off a few more rounds into the darkness.
