Welcome

[change source]

Hello, Tangotango, and welcome to the Simple English Wikipedia! I hope you are happy editing here and being a Wikipedian. Some helpful pages to start you off are Wikipedia:Useful, Help:Contents and Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines.

If you want to meet and talk with other members, you can visit our version of the "village pump" at Wikipedia:Simple talk. Just remember that you should sign your messages on Talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words.

We have a special page that describes how to write Simple English articles. If you want some ideas of which pages to work on, read Wikipedia:Requested articles or the list of wanted pages.

We are also focusing on core articles until this Wikipedia grows. This list of topics will be helpful if you want to start such pages.

Even though it is a good idea to research an article (like looking at the discussion page) before making large changes, do not be afraid to be bold! Any changes you make that are not perfect can be fixed later.

If you need any help, send a message to an administrator on his or her talk page. Administrators on Wikipedia will try to help you with your problems and resolve them as soon as possible.

Finally, if you have any questions on how things work, don't hesitate to ask me. The best way to do that is to leave a message on my talk page. Good luck and happy editing! -- Psy guy 02:26, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please make a version like this, but that reads "Simple English Encyclopedia" under "Wikipedia" (yes, I know the font may have to be small). Also, the globe you're using is missing some details (accent marks over letters). -- Netoholic @ 06:55, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you fix your new version? It should say "Simple English Encyclopedia", not repeat Wikipedia twice. :) -- Netoholic @ 18:13, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

anon IP user warning

[change source]

Sort of confusing. The edit not yet been reverted or removed. It was only tagged for deletion. zephyr2k 05:49, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should use a different template for notifying good faith article creators and other major contributors that an article they have made has been tagged or nominated for deletion. Does simple have an existing one? Or should we bring it to the community if we can add a new one for this particular use? I personally don't mind having to make a customized message for each occasion. I actually composed one but had an edit conflict with you. zephyr2k 05:58, 14 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Related to your revert/warning script (seen here). Can you do a couple things? I think that linking the day and year is unnecessary (and clutters things like Special:Whatlinkshere/2006). Also, I don't see much need for a "test2" warning. Either its a Test or it's Vandalism. That stop hand is already one of the most linked-to images. -- Netoholic @ 19:36, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

deletion policy

[change source]

You apparently have a lack of understanding with reagards to the Deletion policy. Firstly, except for some minor tweaking, I wrote the policy two years ago. Secondly, if pages which don't conform to the policy are routinely deleted in good faith by an admin, then it is the page which is out-of-date, not a rogue admin violating policy. Since no one else has bothered to update the deletion policy to cover items qhich we've routinely deleted, I've done so. I can promise you, though, that the list is still incomplete and I will very likely delete something that "doesn't fit" in the future, so don't get your panties in a bunch. I'll also be happy to explain my reasoning and even reverse myself if convincing argument is made. You've been here on and off since only July, so please evaluate whether you have the perspective to see the needs of this wiki. -- Netoholic @ 06:49, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator

[change source]

It's my duty to point out that, consensus being reached on Wikipedia:Administrators, you are now an admin. Make sure to review all the current policies. If you intend to use the "Block user" function, you must keep your email address current and check for messages often. The big thing to remember is not to use your abilities in any conflicts (editing or otherwise) that you're directly involved. Other than that, I'd suggest starting out slowly, and feel free to contact me or another admin if you have any other questions or just need a second opinion. Try to keep to the core values of Simple:, and remember... we aren't just another EN: Wikipedia. -- Netoholic @ 20:50, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar Congratulations Tangotango on your sucessful RfA!!

Hello Tangotango, I wanted to congratulate you for your sucessful, but long RfA and give you a barnstar along with it. I hope you have a great time being an administrator here in the simple english wikipedia. Good luck:-) --§ Alastor Moody (T + C) 02:10, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted the merged article!!! the other should have been left as a redirect rather than deleted. I can't even find the correct history with the merged article anymore, I hope it is recoverable. Blockinblox

Wow, I didn't even know it was possible to merge to GFDL histories like that... But won't it be a little hard to chronologically follow changes to two different histories on the same GFDL? edits jumping back and forth between two different sets? Are you sure this is the right thing to do? Blockinblox 13:58, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you unblock that IP and give more warnings in future - he got one warning, and only made one edit after receiving it, and even that was only a minute after so he may well not have seen the warning. Warnings often work to stop vandals, so give them a chance. --Tango 12:47, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right now I am just trying to link the "wanted categories" (Started with nearly 500 of them) into the cat tree. I try and prune some of the weirder ones that most like popped in from a en:wiki cut and paste (Nobel peace prize winners from Austria in the 1930s on a Tuesday under a full moon) but occasionally I let a few slide. After I link bottom to top, I am most likely going to restart from the top and crawl through the cats and try and tighten them up some. The tree is in bad shape though, could be months of work to straighten it out as I realy don't think I will be keeping up todays pace (300+edits.. ouch) -- Creol 09:41, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! re Simple Wiktionary

[change source]

Thanks for your message on my talk page on Simple Wiktionary! I discovered the Simple English Wiktionary and Wikipedia recently. Now I'm having fun writing definitions. Ooh, I'm having a bit of trouble switching back to complex English now that I'm talking to another native speaker!! :-) Very nice to get your message.

Some questions/opinions/suggestions: it seems to me that the Simple English Wiktionary needs definitions written in Simple English, but it needs definitions of both Simple English words and hard English words. That's because the Simple English Wikipedia needs to use some hard words to talk about technical stuff. I think all definitions should be in the Wiktionary, not in the Simple English Wikipedia.

There's confusion: the SE Wikipedia and SE Wiktionary each have a list of the BE850, but the Wikipedia one has links from each word to Wikipedia pages, and the Wiktionary one has links to Wiktionary pages for each word. For a moment I thought my definition of "decision" had been overwritten or something. Actually it turned out there is already a sort-of definition of "decision" on the Wikipedia page even though the Wiktionary had no definition before I wrote one. Readers will need to look in two places to try to find definitions. I think the SE Wikipedia should have lots of links like [[wikt:word]] not links to Wikipedia pages of definitions.

My understanding is that Simple English should try to be one-word-one-definition. For example, the word "kind" may be used in Simple English to mean "type, sort, what kind of" and not used to mean "nice, generous". (Or should it be the other way around?) How do we know or decide which of the two definitions should be the standard Simple English one? The list of words to write definitions for needs to specify "we need a definition for the noun "whip", not the verb" etc. Or maybe it's not easy to specify everything without actually writing the definitions.

However: since we need definitions of hard words too, we need definitions of both meanings. Then, one of the definitions should be flagged with an asterisk or something to show which one is the Simple English meaning that writers of Simple English are supposed to try to use exclusively if possible. What do you think about all that?

If any of those things are decided as policy one way or another, then instructions for writers need to specify. For example, currently the SE Wiktionary Main Page looks to me as if maybe it's only inviting definitions of simple words, or it's ambiguous.

By the way, did I mention the BE850 are not in alphabetical order; "seem" is out of place and I saw one other, maybe in the t's somewhere. You can reply here I guess though you're more likely to get me on either my English Wikipedia en:User talk:Coppertwig or SE Wiktionary (not sure how to write a link to that). Thanks again for making contact --Coppertwig 04:18, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I'm cheating a bit. I'm using a few words like "is" and "his" in the definitions. "he" is BE850; I'm not sure if that means we can use "his". Maybe we can use "is" because "be" is there. I try to use present tense if the past tense would bring in irregular forms such as "was". Maybe I'm not really cheating. --Coppertwig 04:36, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On one of the SE talk pages somewhere (I forget where) someone suggested having a page preview feature where BE850, BE1500 and non-BE1500 words are different colours. I think that's a good idea, except that bluelinks and redlinks should also show at the same time, so I would suggest that non-BE850 which are BE1500 be underlined and non-BE1500 be struck out (unless there are two kinds of underlining). The feature would have to take into account BE850 or BE1500 words with -ed, -s, -ing, -ly (etc.?) endings. I'm thinking of putting in a feature request like this to bugzilla, asking for maybe a separate button "Show preview with SE marks" or a user preference to have the regular "Show preview" do that. What do you think? --Coppertwig 13:04, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tangotango. In the interests of keeping out admin list somewhat accurate and active, we've asked for your rights on Simple to be withdrawn here. Hope to see you back soon. All the best, PeterSymonds (talk) 17:44, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RfD nomination of Category:Miscellaneous templates

[change source]

An editor has requested deletion of Category:Miscellaneous templates, a page you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Category:Miscellaneous templates and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Kk.urban (talk) 22:57, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
