Our approach

We invent, develop, and deliver products and services in a responsible way, which helps our customers on their sustainability journeys. We're working to make our products more sustainable, from how we build them, to how we package them, to how customers use them.

For the third-party items we offer that have achieved certification from trusted external sustainability certifiers, we've created the Climate Pledge Friendly program to help customers in the U.S. and Europe more easily discover and shop for more sustainable products. We're making our AWS cloud infrastructure more energy efficient to help our customers meet their sustainability goals, while providing them with the cloud-based tools they need to manage their own impacts.

We believe it's important to offer more sustainable products to our customers without compromising on quality, safety, or cost. We seek to offer our customers more products that align with their preferences and our sustainability goals.

Climate Pledge Friendly program

Our program helps customers in the U.S. and Europe discover and shop for more sustainable products. While shopping on Amazon, customers can find the Climate Pledge Friendly label on eligible products. To identify these products, we partner with a wide range of trusted and transparent external certifications.

 

We routinely assess the certification landscape, adding and developing new certifications and reviewing our existing ones against our high bar for transparency, credibility, and customer trust. There are 55 certifications that recognize products with at least one aspect of sustainability, ranging from recycled content to energy efficiency to safe chemicals.

Amazon Private Brands

We consider sustainability from the beginning stages of design for our private brands' products—which include apparel, grocery, home, electronics, and more. Through our commodities sourcing goals, we prioritize using recycled content, reducing material use, and improving recyclability of our products.

 

To support the elimination of deforestation associated with raw materials and ingredients within our food and consumables Private Brands supply chains, we’ve made commitments across the use of palm oil, paper and paper packaging, beef, soy, cocoa, coffee, and tea. In 2023, Amazon Private Brands and Whole Foods Market Private Brands made significant progress toward our deforestation risk reduction and other sourcing goals, achieving those set for paper products, eggs, cotton, and manufactured cellulosic fibers.

Designing our devices sustainably

We design our devices with a focus on carbon reduction and manufacture them with responsibly sourced materials. Sustainability is considered throughout the lifecycle of a product—from how we build it to how our customers use and retire it. We want every new Amazon device to be more energy-efficient and less resource-intensive than the previous generation.

Sustainability in the cloud

AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud offering, with millions of global users depending on it every day. To build a sustainable business for our customers and the world we all share, we’re designing data centers that provide the efficient, resilient service our customers expect while minimizing our environmental footprint—and theirs.

Sustainability Solutions Hub

We launched the Hub in 2023 for Amazon selling partners in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the U.S. The Hub helps them get started with our sustainability programs, including Climate Pledge Friendly, Amazon Renewed, and Ships in Product Packaging.

Sustainability Exchange

In 2023, we launched the Amazon Sustainability Exchange, a free resource center that contains our previously proprietary playbooks, templates, case studies, and science models, among other sustainability best practices. It provides guidance that helped decarbonize our operations—and we’ll continue to unlock more information for all.
