Kevin grew up in Michigan and Florida, but you could equally say he grew up in Tolkien’s Middle Earth and C.S. Lewis’s Narnia. From the first time he walked through the wardrobe into Narnia, he knew he loved fantasy fiction. It allowed him to dream of bright places and also of the dark and mysterious.

After finishing his English degree, he moved to Colorado and worked for Barnes and Noble. He managed four Barnes and Noble stores over fifteen years and during that time he worked on his novel, Hawthorne, hoping to one day have his own work on the shelves.

He lives with his family in Denver and is now dedicated to working full time on writing.

Thank you so much for your question!

I grew up very interested in all things Irish due to my ancestry. When I discovered Morgan Llywelyn's books, which really brought the old tales to life, my interest expanded. I began researching CúChulain, Finn and of course the Druids. There is so much depth to the old tales and if you study them, they reveal many interesting things.

I'd always been drawn to writing fantasy fiction but I decided I didn't want to write about elves and dwarves exactly but wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to write about magic and the supernatural but didn't want to write about vampires or traditional monsters. When I started writing Hawthorne I'd never heard of anyone else writing about Druids in a modern day setting and I thought it was a fun idea that would be a new approach.

In the course of my research, I discovered a rich body of knowledge about the Druids and the more I dug, the more I found. The Druid's represent a different way of looking at the world, one that embraces nature and the earth, one that re-enchants the world. In addition to making entertaining fiction, Druidry represents much that is right in the world and I hope that my book opens people's eyes to different ideas and perhaps more appreciation for the mystery of life.

I put on a song or album that evokes the mood I want. I put on the headphones and go into the feeling of the music and then start to write. When I'm creating something new, this is often how I work. I listened to Loreena McKennitt a lot while working on Hawthorne. I also listened to Evanescence and sometimes Metallica too. (less)
