I had lived with my sister in Oakland, California for a year during college. This letter arrived in my mailbox five years later out of the blue, indicating that Cody and Jessica Sisco were to leave their apartment somewhere in Oregon within 30 days. Who were these people? Were we related? How did their letter find me? Was it a message from an alternate history where my sister and I had been raised in Oregon??? I wish I'd looked into it further. Then again, I'm happy not to know.(less)

Images and voices in my head are repeated and reshaped until they take the form of written words. Then, across time and space, the stories I've dreamed up are replicated in readers' minds and take on a life of their own in readers' imaginations. I'm basically a wizard! How effing cool is that?????? (less)

THE PROMISE AND POWER OF AUTHOR COLLABORATION

Originally published on the Indie Author Day blog on May 4, 2017.

We all know the writing profession can be lonely. Writing requires us to narrow our focus, block out distractions, and pound the keyboard, extruding stories from our minds onto the page. When the act of writing is suspended—it never really ends—and we emerge from our writi

Albert Camus
“Some, often without knowing it, suffered from being deprived of the
company of friends and from their inability to get in touch with them through the usual
channels of friendship, letters, trains, and boats. Others, fewer these, Tarrou may have
been one of them, had desired reunion with something they couldn't have defined, but
which seemed to them the only desirable thing on earth. For want of a better name, they
sometimes called it peace.”
Camus, Albert

Alexander Graham Bell
“Don't keep forever on the public road, going only where others have gone, and following one after the other like a flock of sheep. Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. 'Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Of course it will be a little thing, but do not ignore it. Follow it up, explore all around it; one discovery will lead to another, and before you know it you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the results of thought.”
Alexander Graham Bell

Kazuo Ishiguro
“You see, because [Norfolk is] stuck out here on the east, on this hump jutting into the sea, it's not on the way to anywhere. People going north and south, they bypass it altogether. For that reason, it's a peaceful corner of England, rather nice. But it's also something of a lost corner.'

Someone claimed after the lesson that Miss Emily had said Norfolk was England's 'lost corner' because that was were all the lost property found in the country ended up.

Ruth said one evening, looking out at the sunset, that 'when we lost something precious, and we'd looked and looked and still couldn't find it, then we didn't have to be completely heartbroken. We still had that last bit of comfort, thinking one day, when we were grown up, and we were free to travel the country, we could always go and find it again in Norfolk.”
Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go

Henry Wiencek
“Genealogy becomes a mania, an obsessive struggle to penetrate the past and snatch meaning from an infinity of names. At some point the search becomes futile – there is nothing left to find, no meaning to be dredged out of old receipts, newspaper articles, letters, accounts of events that seemed so important fifty or seventy years ago. All that remains is the insane urge to keep looking, insane because the searcher has no idea what he seeks. What will it be? A photograph? A will? A fragment of a letter? The only way to find out is to look at everything, because it is often when the searcher has gone far beyond the border of futility that he finds the object he never knew he was looking for.”
Henry Wiencek, The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White

Margaret Atwood
“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom.
We lived in the gaps between the stories.”
Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale
