Sometimes when I'm writing, I imagine myself, quite literally, in the shoes of the characters. I might stand up and actually act out how a character would respond to something with both his/her body and voice which helps me (sometimes!) to get the emotions right. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book! (less)

I'm intrigued by social fractures: the point at which a relationship begins to fray. Unsteady ground is also very interesting to me: characters who are walking on egg shells for some reason. I also love absurdity, especially when it's commonplace. When something totally ridiculous and unexpected happens, especially when it happens at an inopportune time, I want to describe that, and the reactions such an event incurs. For example, at my grandmother's funeral, pieces of the ceiling plaster started peeling off while my sister was singing a special song. These pieces started falling on people in the pews. It was hilarious and heartbreaking-- like life!(less)

“You love people. They disappoint you. But sometimes, they don’t. They just keep loving you, right through it all, waiting for you to wake up and appreciate them. To say, “I love you. I’ve always loved you back.”
Courtney Maum, I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You

“I fell asleep smiling, fully at ease with the ludicrous prospect of spending the rest of my life with this one, single person. It's not quite right what they say: love doesn't make you blind, it makes you optimistic.”
Courtney Maum, I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You

“Paris at night is a street show of a hundred moments you might have lived.”

“This is really what you want? To live with a poet?” “Yes,” she said. “With the hot plate? And the lice?”
Joshua Ferris, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour

“I know all about endings. It is beginnings that elude me.”
Marion Zimmer Bradley, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Ancestors of Avalon

“Boris Pasternak described this phenomenon beautifully, when he wrote, “No genuine book has a first page. Like the rustling of the forest, it is begotten God knows where, and it grows and it rolls, arousing the dense wilds of the forest until suddenly . . . it begins to speak with all the treetops at once.”
Elizabeth Gilbert
