USA Today bestselling author Nicola Davidson worked for many years in media and government communications, but hasn't looked back since she decided writing erotic historical romance was infinitely more fun. When not chained to a computer, she can be found ambling along one of New Zealand’s beautiful beaches, cheering on the All Blacks rugby team, history geeking on the internet, or daydreaming. If this includes dessert—even better! Her books have appeared in USA Today, NPR, and Entertainment Weekly. This was a really fun, and super hot, f/f historical romance. It was a tad underdeveloped in some areas for my taste but that's the nature of novellas so I still liked it a lot and would recommend. Definitely excited to have found this author.
If you read this nearby to a fire extinguisher, you're safe. A toaster oven erotica that pops out all sorts of sadness/ wickedness/ wetness/ playfulness. Highly recommended to those who owns 🧯
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella! The sex is steamy, it fits its pages well, and I love the way the ending worked out. The writing is awkward in places but it doesn't get in the way of the characterization or fun. I especially appreciate that while it's obvious Amelia's husband is an awful man, we don't see any of his violence on page.
When I finished I was excited to see that the next book picks up exactly where this one leaves off - I'm excited to read on!
I really enjoyed this delightful novealla. It was short but the story was so wonderful and sweet and sexy and emotional. I am giving it a 4. 5 stars which I never give novellas because of how invested I was. I really need the rest of the series.
This sexy f/f romp is the story of Amelia, trapped in a loveless marriage to a philandering husband, and her devoted ladies maid Beatrice. Beatrice belongs to the Surrey Sexual Freedom Society, a small group of like minded individuals who meet on a regular basis to share their trials and successes. She's told them all about her unrequited feelings for Amelia. When she finally has the chance to show Amelia how she feels, will Amelia respond in kind or will Beatrice find herself out on the street seeking new employment?
I really enjoyed this story! Amelia's husband is a cold and cruel man and sex for her has always been a painful experience. Imagine her delight when she discovers she isn't frigid after all – she just needed the right person to awaken her senses. Beatrice is in love with Amelia and finally gets up the courage to initiate contact that can be rejected or returned. They share several sexy scenes together, though they know that they must keep their passion for each other hidden. I wasn't sure how this could possibly have a happy ending, but the author throws in some nice twists to make it so. It's a short novella (55 pages) but definitely worth the read! I'm looking forward to reading more stories in the series.
Note: a copy of this story was provided by the author for review.
Decent short story, but left much to be desired. Because the characters have already known each other for a while, it feels like we're dumped into it half-way, rather than taken along for the ride of attraction. It contains one of my least favorite romance tropes - an abusive husband, to make the pairing of the heroines more platable. He could have just been indifferent for the purpose of the story, but instead he is physically abusive and a rapist. Yet, when the heroine has sex, all of that trauma is suddenly fixed, because of magic healing sexings. I mean, some fingering action with a lady is all you need to forget years of excrutiating horribleness, right?
In that one act it was as if a heavy weight had been lifted, like something broken had been reset and now healing would begin.
If there is not sufficient room in a work to fully address traumatic experiences, do. not. include. them.
I enjoyed it a lot - of course it felt kind of instalovey, but with 55 pages, it's understandable. I loved the setting though, and the idea of society/gathering where queer people supported each other and could express themselves freely.
Still, there were some issues I had with writing, like cringey word choices. Overall though, this was a nice read and I want more :)
My Lady's Lover is a journey of awakening. I enjoyed it but felt like it was lacking something, something that I can't put my finger on exactly but I know is missing.
Stars: 4 Stars Format: Digital Steam Level: Very Steamy Series: Complete
CW: abuse, sexual assault, homophobia, cheating
One thing to keep in mind with this story is that it is a 55 page novella, so lots of the falling in love that Beatrice does has already passed and we’re plunked down right into the action.
Quick Thoughts: - Even with how short this novella is, I really liked our two heroines and their dynamic - The side characters were hardly on page but I liked them too - Man that husband was a real piece of work, I was hoping he would be killed by an angry mistress. I’m going to pretend he was - Wish we could have seen more of them falling in love or their life together after everything but I still enjoyed seeing this little slice of their life - There aren’t enough historical wlw romances and this just made me want more
Overall, this short novella is a quick and enjoyable read. I will be continuing with this series.
It just wasn't for me. Because it is so short, there wasn't really enough time to believe in the romance or even know the characters. For Beatrice, I accept that she loves Amelia because she tells us so, but there didn't seem to be enough of Amelia to understand that for ourselves. As for Amelia, I feel like her "love" for Beatrice could just be relief she enjoyed sex with someone; her connection to Beatrice didn't seem to extend to more than that. Anyway, I am not a good reader for erotic romance. I tend to disconnect from erom because there is such a focus on the physical, and there isn't always a similar focus on the relationship building outside of sex.
This wasn't bad per say but it wasn't great either. I think if this was an actual novel and had time to be flushed out it would be fantastic. Also I've never been the biggest fan of novellas unfortunately
I would recommend this if you want some extremely smutty f/f action. Amelia was quite annoying unfortunately she was also way too naive for my liking. My biggest complaint is how much the word pussy was used. A very vulgar word that could've been swapped out a few times for something else.
I am so excited about this new series from Nicola Davidson, and I absolutely adored My Lady's Lover. Erotica can sometimes slip into some dark places, but Davidson somehow manages to mix the sinful and sexual with so much joy. My Lady's Lover is a celebration of life and passion, and I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a quick, hot read with a beautiful HEA.
Short, fun, happy sapphic historical romance. The whole series is queer and the characters are very open-minded and curious. That is a welcome change from the prim, uptight virgins who are usually paired with devious rakes.
This was more erotica than romance (which is sometimes the case with Nicola’s stories), but it had a very sweet romance that I LOVED. I always live for class difference couples because how are they going to make it work in a time when class difference is a BIG damn deal.
This started off a *tad* bit heavier than I expected (nothing is shown on page) but it made me feel really bad for Amelia, trapped in a marriage to an abusive aristocrat. Of course her lady’s maid/companion is heavily pining for her and they end up falling for each other. But this did feel rushed. It tried to cram a lot into 60-ish pages and left me with a lot of questions. Plus the solution to her being married was a little too ridiculous, even for me. I liked the relationship and i’m always going to champion more sapphic stories (especially in historical romances!) but this was sort of a meh read outside of the FMCs, who I genuinely loved.
