Murder, decadence, cowardice, guilt, and aristocratic foxes in wigs all combine in this gorgeously poignant poem/folksong from Emily Carroll, about the futility and heartbreak one can run into when dealing with vengeance.

This was excellent. It's a pretty classic Emily Carroll horror short that would fit right in with the stories from _Through the Woods,_ but it features the type of glamorous beast-people she's been focusing on in her illustration work lately. (In this case they're foxes.) It's creepy and satisfying, and the art is, AS EVER, fucking outrageously great. Emily Carroll, my dudes. (And the printing is very much up to the content. This is a well-made pamphlet, with a solid feel and excellent colors.)
Emily Carroll, never stops to amaze me. The illustrations are gorgeous. The story is dark and nightmarish. I loved every part of it. If only it was longer...
why did i read this knowing it was a short horror comic... i want to erase it from my brain, this is what i get for reading stuff because it looks pretty. the contents are not pretty
Such a good one, you go girl devour him!! It is rare that I read a short story that I appreciate so much yet find its length exactly appropriate, and Emily Carroll did it twice! How impressive.

A short yet equally unflinching and harrowing story with such amazing and vivid artwork! This is making me want to check out more of Emily Carroll's works!
I fully admit that Emily Carroll can do no wrong in my eyes. Beneath the Dead Oak Tree is a short story about a terrible man and terrible choices. It's a lovely, disturbing, and outright creepy poem with such beautiful art. Damn, what a fantastic little book :)
Haunting and beautifully done. Emily Carroll's work continues to amaze me.
In this horror short story told in verse, Emily Carroll continues to improve her style. The illustrations are gorgeous and unique and the story is chilling, satisfying, and surprising until the very end.
Foxes, murder, fancy balls, and oh my this was epic!
I just adore Emily Carroll, her work is amazing both her art and her stories. Each time I am looking forward to new work, and this one I found through Shortbox. It is a short story of just a few pages, while I wouldn't mind more, I think the size is perfect for what it tells. Plus, it has amazing art.
It is about a female fox who flirts with a male fox at a party, all very fancy and aristocratic. He tells her to meet her at x time at the dead oak tree... and what she sees there fills her with horror and shock. And me as well, dang that was just the most gruesome thing that happens. That man, fox, is definitely one that everyone should avoid. I was a bit whut when she decided to flirt further with him even after what she knows but the ending is clear why she did that.
Be warned tons of gruesomeness, blood, and more. Then again, if you know Emily Carroll's other work you won't be surprised. :P
I would recommend this one to everyone looking for a short horror story to read. I just flew through the short story and enjoyed it immensely.
A gorgeous, savage little revenge fable, which reminded me of a less playful Dame Darcy. Currently PWYW on Shortbox, if the lack of new Diamond comics is starting to bite.
