This book was so interesting. Dr. Smith read it himself, which he did in a captivating and conversational way. The book isn’t a diet plan, but rather a step-by-step to creating your own plan. I am completely impressed and can’t wait to buy a hard copy. A quick, easy, and very helpful read.

Mind Over Weight by Dr. Ian K. Smith is a self-help book about weight-loss strategies.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher St. Martin’s Press, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis and Opinions:

This is touted as "A motivational guide to losing weight and maintaining success by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Clean & Lean."

The book is broken down into chapters that endeavour to help the reader succeed in thinking about weight loss as a journey of the mind.  Chapters include information on unlocking your motivation, goal setting, finding the right plan, dealing with cravings, boosting your confidence and fixing your relationship with food.  All the chapters are jam-packed with information and  instructions for creating your own plan, step by step.    It is a very comprehensive plan to weight loss.

Note that there are questionnaires and action plans  in the book that do not lend themselves well to those of us who use an e-reader, but they worked fairly well on my computer, and I imagine a hard-copy of the book would be preferable.  Just remember to have pen & paper ready.

There is a great ending entitled Top 10 Thoughts to Live By, and it may be the best chapter of all.

Overall, it was good, but I certainly did not find anything new in it.  It was a straight-forward book with plenty of tips, and it was organized quite well.  For someone starting out on this journey, it may be just what they need....and I wish them luck.

Developing a personal diet or fitness plan -- and sticking to it -- is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. As someone who has struggled with making realistic goals and sticking with my fitness program for the long haul, I really needed a book like this one!

I enjoyed Ian K. Smith's book Clean & Lean. His no-nonsense, straight forward approach to eating and weight loss made incorporating intermittent fasting into my lifestyle an easy switch. When I saw the title to this new book, I knew I had to read it! I'm glad I did....there is so much awesome information in this book!

Mind Over Weight covers many of the pitfalls of starting a diet/fitness plan -- motivation, making realistic goals, assessing your readiness to start a program, and sticking with it. There are lots of places to personalize your book by filling in your goals/strengths/weaknesses. I'm definitely buying a copy of this for my keeper shelf! I like the fact that I can fill in my thoughts and goals and make the book part of my personal fitness/healthy eating journey.

Another great book from Ian K. Smith. I'm definitely eagerly awaiting his next one!

**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**

A lot of it is common sense, but there are a few takeaways that were good for me. Don't be too hard on yourself, and when you mess up, you can always hit the reset button.

This is a very interesting book. It has a lot of good information and it is explained in an easy to understand format.

The premise is to get your mind wrapped around your motivation and then make a plan and follow it. The book has a quiz one can take to find out where you are as you start your journey to weight loss.

I like this author very much and think he does a good job of helping people with weight loss. It is a touchy subject with some people and Ian Smith writes in a very approachable manner.

I received this free ARC from the publisher. This is my honest, unbiased, review.

Dr. Ian K. Smith is the writer of several weight loss books but this is the first I've read. Maybe I would have rated it better had I read some of the prior ones. But this text feels like 207 pages of summaries of most every goal-setting perspective there is. I got frustrated with how short each one of the topics was and how there wasn't enough focus on any of them to truly inspire me to consider it as a tool for weight loss.

The coup de grace was when an example of setting measurable goals was "I want to walk on a treadmill or in my neighborhood 2 miles, 5 times a week. I want to be able to walk these 2 miles in less than 20 minutes." It's basic math to realize that's a sub-10-minute mile. I have never RUN 2 miles in less than 20 minutes. Immediately below this example is the discussion on setting attainable goals.

I'll look somewhere else for weight loss motivation.

Why did it take me so long to read this book? Because although I've been overweight all of my life and I know I need to get some of this weight off, as I began the book, we were in the beginnings of dealing with Corona Virus where I work, and I wasn't mentally ready to get through it. Thankfully I'm in a little better place at the moment, so I was able to finally read it. There are a lot of tips I was able to get from this book. In fact, I just ordered a hard copy because it's something that I'll need to refer to as I attempt to continue on this journey.

This book is designed to help those who want to lose weight by finding strategies that help to get you motivated and stay on track to meet goals. The seven steps are as follows. First, you want to make sure you are in the right frame of mind to start a diet. Then you need to set goals so that you will have a course of action to follow. Then one needs to find the best diet to follow. Once you have a plan, you might need some help to deal with cravings as you try to lose weight. You may also need to seek ways to boost your confidence so that you are more likely to succeed or stick to your diet plan. Afterward, to ensure further success, you will want to create a positive environment and address your overall relationship with food in general.

The author provides some useful tips and strategies to help you plan and execute a diet. The suggestions are ones that are easy to follow. Plus, they allow the reader to approach his or her nutrition from a personal point of view. What I like about this book is the fact that the strategies provided within could be used to meet other goals as well. So, Mind Over Weight might be just the beginning. This is a book that I will revisit and consult when I need tips or advice on restarting my diet or just when I need a boost.

Thanks to St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

It was okay, nothing special really. Occasionally said things that were not great, like in examples of daily goals he suggested replacing meals with shakes or smoothies - this is a silly idea for weight loss actually. Shakes and smoothies are good for bulking, for gaining muscle when you have very high caloric needs and have trouble eating enough while staying healthy. But when you need to lose weight, making yourself feel hungry while drinking calories? How does that make sense? It doesn't, don't drink your calories, not even with magic smoothies.

Another example is when he was listing the signs of emotional hunger vs physical hunger and neglected to mention that actually sometimes the symptoms usually associated with emotional hunger can happen with physical hunger too. Normally physical hunger doesn't come with feelings of guilt - except maybe when you're trying to lose weight and you feel guilty about everything that you eat that isn't broccoli or celery, even though you shouldn't feel guilty about it. It might be a sign of disordered eating, or disordered health and fitness, but it's still happening when actually hungry.

Most of the stuff in the book was fine from what I could tell. But several things were not and that can be detrimental to peoples weight loss efforts.

his book is a guide meant help you enter the right mind-set for weight loss and stay on track by defining goals and motivation to acheive success.

Overall the book isnt bad nothing groundbreaking in it mostly common sense but a few tools are very helpful in trying to decide what will make the difference this time to not only lose weight but keep it off.

This book is helpful if you track not only your foods but your emotional triggers and motivations. It promotes emotional reflection and changing your mindset for success. It has tips for reducing calories thru substitutes that easily pack on calorie consumption.

This book is best utilized if you truly track the things that not only keep you on track but the things or emotions that derail you. Weight loss and maintenance are such a personal journey and inner reflection is needed for long-term results.

This is not a weight loss plan rather a tool kit for learning strategies to keep you motivated. This will benefit some and not others but it is a book with solid strategies to help you strengthen and correct your relationship with food.

I relieved this book from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an honest review.

I listened to the audiobook, which is only a couple of hours long (and much faster at 1.75x speed). There are some decent tidbits of advice. I liked the stuff at the beginning and the tips at the end and probably should have paid more attention to the stuff in the middle. Would recommend, and would read again in a couple years time.

Favourite Quotes:

"When you think about quitting, remember why you started."

4 A clear vision can declutter a busy mind.
5 Motivation gets you started and commitment keeps you going.
6 Positive energy breeds positive results.
7 Focus not on how far away from a goal you are but on far you’ve come.
8 Failure is an opportunity to improve.

This was just the book that I needed at just the right time, as I try to refocus on weight loss once again. I am a lifelong dieter and I am often very successful at taking it off, and much less successful at keeping it off (which probably merits a book of its own). However, I found that although there were no challenges mentioned in this book that an experienced dieter would not be aware of, it was organized and written in a way that makes the reader feel empowered to overcome them. Most self-help diet books focus on the physical aspect of dieting, when actually the most challenging part lies between your ears. I read this in one sitting and felt that I could immediately start using some of the suggestions. I would recommend this book to anyone that needs a boost to help them start a diet or get over a diet hump.

I received a copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. The motivational tips are excellent, and it's got a solid breakdown for working to achieve long term goals. Perhaps the best part of the book is the fact that much of it can be applied to other areas of life as well - it's more of a "this is how you break down a long term goal for continual progress" book than it is a weight loss book, which was quite nice. It's a very refreshing change. I entered the giveaway because I was honestly curious to see how kooky these books have gotten and not out of any desire to lose weight, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that this was setup in a way that anyone could use the tips in any area of their lives.

As a lifetime dieter, the title, Mind over Weight: Curb Cravings, Find Motivation, and Hit Your Number in 7 Simple Steps, immediately grabbed my attention. If you are new to the weight loss scene, this is a good book for you to read, as you will learn that the actual eating plan you are following is only part of the weight loss equation. You will learn about sustaining motivation, goal setting, organizing your environment for success, etc. However, if you have ever been on a true weight loss program in the past, you will not find much new information here. Good information here, just nothing new. Mind of Weight by Ian K. Smith was provided to me as an ARC by Netgalley and St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

This is a plus buy if you are serious of losing weight then gaining it back plus circle. I, myself know how easy in the past that so I thought I wouldn’t have to think about my diet anymore since I had won the weight battle. I think that if you read and do the steps you might be able to break the before mention weight cycle. In a sense, while the book is a quick read it is an important read. You can use the steps in this book for other goals you have and have a much better chance of succeeding. It’s a book that made me think of some things that I had not thought of. It’s an excellent book!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

I can easily say that this book did motivate me and affect the decisions I made concerning my approach to weight loss. The chapters and layout of this book are very easy to approach and understand. For some people this will not be exhaustive enough; for a lot of people this book will be the "swift kick in the butt" that we need to get up and get going. There is a lot of valuable information that I was able to apply to my life and will continue to process as I set out to achieve my goals. MIND OVER WEIGHT is not a specific diet plan, but rather a healthy mental approach to the diet we choose and live out. I would recommend this book for the motivation aspect and especially the goal setting chapter. Overall, a very good read!

This book has a lot of outdates science that has been proven again and again not to work. Discipline is not a proven way for lasting weight loss. Neither is calorie cutting. Also, loading up on constant carbohydrates tends not to be a good strategy.

There is also a ton of information in it. Some of it is valuable, but a lot more information is not applicable.

This book feels very far reaching. While I do agree with some of the principles, especially around confidence and self esteem. They are not exactly correct and the understanding of these topics is somewhat superficial. However, they are important to improve when trying to improve yourself.

I really gained nothing out of this book. All of the advice was general tidbits that have already been hashed and rehashed a thousand times. There was no new information to give this book value. And right when I was thinking I might give it two or three stars because at least it confirms that struggling with weight is a common issue that you shouldn't be ashamed of, the afterward occurred in which the author proceeds to sell you on a million of his own websites, programs, and getting you to follow him on social media. So really, this whole book seemed to just be a way to get people to become his nutritional clients

This is not your average weight loss book. This book is about self-assessing, goal setting, and strategic, actionable ways to manage your weight. There is no diet plan here- in fact you can use these strategies with any healthful eating strategy because this book is all about being mentally prepared to lose weight.

I really find weight loss books that are worth reading; this book is a rare gem. If you are considering a lifestyle change that includes healthier eating and weight management, I would encourage you to start with this book.

I won this book as a goodreads giveaway.

Mind over Weight looks at how important motivation is to achieving weight loss.

However, most of the ideas will be familiar to Psychology 101 alumni or anyone who has read a few other diet books. For example, SMART goals, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivators, and meditation as a stress-reliever are fairly well known to most dieters. But if you are new to the diet game, the principles within Mind over Weight are presented in an organized fashion and could be helpful. 3 stars.

I know what I should eat and that I should exercise but it has always been a battle with my mind regarding my eating habits. This book is a straight forward approach to finding the right diet or as I like to say eating plan for you. At the end of each chapter it has helpful questionnaire that make you think about what you need in diet to be successful. It is like making a customized plan. There is also great information regarding why you eat and is it head hunger or real hunger. A realistic, no nonsense read that can help you.

I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This was an extremely quick and easy read. It was extremely straight forward with some good tips and advice. It definitely seems to be geared toward people who have no knowledge about health, nutrition, and fitness. As someone who works in healthcare, none of the information was anything new that I didn’t already know.

I do think that this is a good book too help formulate an outline on how to get on the road to fitness, self care, and self love.

I highly recommend for anyone who might struggle with their weight or self image .

As someone who struggles with body image, weight, and all of the societal norms that are pushed on you for what is and is not acceptable this book was spot on with all of the behavior based therapy I have gone through. It gives very simple steps and journaling techniques to ensure that you have a lasting result, not just a quick fix that most diets and fads result in. Strongly recommend for anyone.

I own and have read more "diet" books and plans then I can count. There are lots of great plans out there and everyone is unique so what works for one may not work for someone else.

This is not a diet book or plan per say. This is more like a road map for the journey of changing your eating habits. This book goes more into why we do what we do and how to mentally prepare our selves for changing bad habits and preparing our mind for a change in how we relate to food.

If you're looking for an eating guide, this is not the book for you. In fact, there's not a lot of new information found in this book in the regard. In this outing Dr. Ian addresses goal planning and motivation. If you have a hard time sticking to a program or even beginning a program, this book would be helpful for you. Once you get your mind set, then go read one Dr. Ian's other books where he outlines an actual plan that suits you.
