Absolutely loved this book as a new(ish) runner. Invaluable practical tips to take away, and Bella’s writing style is so relatable and easy to read. She really does make running feel both accessible and an incredibly useful tool to help with mental health!

Brilliant with bells on. I read Jog On last year when I was first running.

Thanks to Bellas inspiration I’m no longer a beginner but my goodness I can still benefit from pretty much every bit of advice she dishes up here. I was starting to flag in my half marathon training but a binge read of this (to be followed by a re-read of Jog On next!) has refreshed my urge to press on. So many excellent tips to follow up on. It’s written like Bella is sitting there talking to you. She doesn’t sugar coat it but gives you so many reasons (largely mental health in her case but it could be anything) why running really is worth it.

I could bang on some (plenty) more but I’ll stop there.

Epic.

Since Ive read the author's first book - Jog On, I prefer that one to this. To be, this book is more like a supplement book and of course one that can be used as a journal, especially if you are starting out on your running/jogging journey.

In Jog On, the author told us how running helped her overcome her anxiety and panic. Its a lovely, open hearted, inspiring account of the author's foray into jogging. In the journal, the author gives us tools to use to describe our feelings when we are triggered by anxiety or panic attack and then use exercise - in this case running, to help soothe our body and mind both.

Funny, easy read, full of journal like pages and tables and funny quotes - this is a good pick if you're just starting out as a runner.

I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a beginner when it comes to running (hit my first 5k when starting this book) but, like Mackie, the main reason I run is my mental health.
I found this book to be motivating and practical (I feel like I’ve learnt a lot!) whilst still being very much entertaining. From now on definitely going to look at the quality of my runs from a different (more positive) perspective, and I have this book to thank for that!
Would also love to read Jog On when I get the chance, though I’m glad I found this one first, as I’ve got so much inspiration from it

I picked this up second hand thinking it was Bella Mackie's novel which it is not! Lol. It's like a supplement guide to 'Jog On' and it's meant to be used as your own running journal. I didn't use it for this purpose but still enjoyed reading it nonetheless and gained a lot from it. I've started making myself a little running goal each week. Would be great for anyone looking to take up running, especially if they've already read 'Jog On'.

Genuinely such a great read for anyone starting out on their running journey. Bellas ideology is wholly relatable and you'll struggle to not find a part of yourself in this book. The journalling elements hold you accountable and actually get you to reflect inwards and learn new things about yourself.

Interesting book about the benefit of running for your mental health. Didn't realise it was a journal type book until I started reading and loved the format.

"The most common thing people say to me is that they'd like to be a runner but they're crap at it. Or they're 'not a runner' as though some deity was in the delivery room, witnessed our births and immediately decided whether we were runners or decidedly NOT runners. WRONG! If you're lucky enough to have the use of your legs, you can be a runner. Get some trainers, put them on and wobble off. There - runner!"

Following the success of Jog On, which I read and reviewed earlier in the year, I bought the accompanying journal when it was published last week. Filled to the brim with practical tips for a newbie, the book is split into two sections - mental health and running. The mental health section focuses on the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks, intrusive thoughts and suggests good coping strategies. The running section gives really practical advice about getting started, prepping, setting goals, how to make it a habit, different ways to run, boredom, pitfalls and how to progress. It includes sections to complete yourself (tasks, questions and suggestions) and quirky images and quotes to inspire. There are resources at the back, which are brilliant.

What I love about Mackie's writing is how she is consistently supportive, reminding you that almost anyone can run (regardless of fitness level, ability, age, or size). I also like that she isn't 'into' things like protein shakes or personal bests and that she doesn't intend to run a marathon. I can't imagine myself wanting these things, but had long assumed you needed to, in order to 'be a runner'. I like the escapism element of a run (as I do with books), that I am doing it for myself (but it helps my family, friends and work by proxy) and that despite feeling tired and achey afterwards, I also feel better. Funny and feasible, empowering and entertaining, Jog On Journal is an excellent read for anyone who wants to run and / or is struggling with mental health.
