This book gives new meaning to the genre of suspense thriller. I found it to be action packed and definitely edge of seat reading. It was riveting and kept my attention to the last page. I’ve wanted to read this book since it was released and it didn’t disappoint. The characters were strong and there was a mixture of Amish and English. I ask my self why I waited so long to read this page turner.

Victoria (Kauffman) Parish works for the CIA but lately she’s been on the run from some very bad CIA agents. She knows something that would put these bad men behind bars for life. Her fiancé David was also a CIA agent but he died because of what he knew. Now these bad people will stop at nothing to kill Victoria before she can turn David’s evidence in to the head of the CIA . Everywhere she hides out these bad people find her and she wonders how they seem to always know where she is? She seeks refuge in an Amish work shop after she has been wounded and a kind Amish family puts their lives in jeopardy trying to help her. Now Victoria’s Amish friends are hiding out from these thugs too. Will this chase ever stop ? Will Victoria be able to live long enough to turn the evidence over to the head of the CIA ?

I recommend this book to readers of Suspense Thrillers and fans of the Author. This book can be read as a stand alone.

Fast paced, exciting, suspenseful and filled with action. From the first page, the suspense builds and keeps going throughout the story. Will Victoria stay alive long enough to find the evidence she seeks? Will she put others in jeopardy? Seeking answers from the past and making the decision to choose a different future depends on staying alive. Great read. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.

I intended on getting this book when I came upon the JustRead tour posted and decided to get the book since I had an Amazon gift card. Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE romantic suspense!

It was about 20 years ago that I started with Harlequin’s Intrigue line – I read quite a few of those books, but I have more that I haven’t – among other books from 2000-2006.

I also wanted to get this book as I had previously read Amish Country Murder by the author and enjoyed that book! These are standalone books and do not need to be read together. As it is LOVE INSPIRED, there will be references to God, themes of salvation, redemption, second chances, and some prayer.

Immediately it being the genre it is, the plot, as well as an “Amish” story – I was really excited to read this. There are Amish terms (Pennsylvania Dutch), and thankfully I do understand them Gott/God; gut/good; bruder/brother. Part of my grandmother’s family settled in the Pennsylvania Dutch country over 150 (or more) years ago.

Anyway …

Alford’s descriptive and engaging writing draws the reader right in from the beginning. The non-stop action begins with a literal bang and does not stop until the very end. This is more suspense than romance, but that doesn’t really matter to me.

Englisch stories mixed with the Amish are always interesting reads, adding in law enforcement ups the excitement. But, in this story, one of the main characters is with former CIA. That definitely ups the interest. And, to be honest, I read about 80 pages before I was able to really take notes for the review. I takes notes as I don’t want to forget anything that interests me or I want to highlight.

Don’t let the calm scene on the bottom of the book fool you – this is anything but calm. The woman on the top of the cover (Victoria) – her intense mood sets the stage for this story.

Victoria is hiding in Amish country from rogue C.I.A agents, with only one contact she can trust. She has some evidence left to her; by her late partner (and boyfriend) that sheds some light on shady dealings. But, she cannot yet decipher it.

But, as always – before she (or anyone) can get a handle on it – the bad guys come calling. And, these ones are not so polite about it.

After being wounded, she is found by Aaron, who instantly decides to help her despite the danger. And, danger there is – thus putting Victoria, Aaron, and his family on the run throughout the Amish territory/farms they live.

Despite her insistence on not accepting Aaron’s help, he wants to help her. And, with his help she’s able to retrieve the evidence that got David killed. It definitely points to the shady dealings – and those involve others, perhaps the very men after her.

With the “death squad” on her trail, Victoria knows that after it is over – she’s done with the spy business. Still, she is grappling with the fact she sometimes misses Amish life, but feels she isn’t worthy to return to it. It is through widower Aaron that she starts seeing the way to a second chance – her past doesn’t define her.

All is revealed, as usual, and I was right about a character I didn’t trust. For some reason as soon as the person was mentioned, I didn’t trust them. And, there was a character I knew what side he was on, again, I was right. Despite having the feelings I did – I did find the end rather exciting and satisfying. At times it is pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, and definitely riveting.

I couldn’t put this quick paced, super-addictive read down for too long without feeling an urge to pick it back up.

Of course the parts not liked are minor – how many times they “ALMOST” get caught. But, without those, the book would be fairly boring, especially for a suspense novel. Given the subject, Alford made sure it remained exciting without being redundant. It definitely kept my interest.

I wanted just a little bit more background on her, was Victoria’s past Amish life. The author did a great job in explaining part of it, but I did have a question as to why she really couldn’t stay with the Amish family “friends” after her parents’ deaths given the differences in the lifestyle – the people who raised her, despite being cousins, were Englisch.

There was also a little “issue” with weapon terminology that some might find questionable – particularly those who work around weapons. It is a common faux pas with most fiction work – magazine vs. clip terminology. While it is nothing that really affects the overall plot or advancement of the story; still, it does need to be addressed, as it is a contentious point for some.

On page 105 it states “the magazine held half a clip”. A clip is different than a magazine, which is what semi-automatic pistols (Glock, Sig Sauer, etc) use. A clip is simply a storage device you use to load ammunition into the magazine of a firearm such as what the Glock (the weapon referred to in the story) uses. As Victoria had been with the CIA, it is possible she had a Glock 17 (standard for law enforcement), thus the magazine would hold 17 rounds (bullets), so HALF A MAGAZINE (not clip) would have been around 8-9 bullets.

Again, a minor snafu for some; major for others.

I don’t know about the indestructible claim or firing after being dropped in water. This is something I did hear Tommy Lee Jones’ character in the movie U.S MARSHALS (1998) state about them firing under water and I have read some articles as to the claim, still that one I am leaving untouched.

Overall, fans of the author and genre won’t want to miss this one! I look very forward to reading her future books. I do have Amish Country Kidnapping and look forward to someday reading it.

I hope that the author plans to have a book about Aaron’s brother who is a U.S Marshal. I’d like to know how that happened as it seems very interesting.

This story was a hit-'em-up action movie in book form. The action didn't let up, but when I stopped to think, there were several things that didn't make sense. As for me, the head henchman was glaringly obvious and I couldn't understand how this seasoned CIA agent couldn't see what was so obvious to me.

I liked how the Amish were willing to help a woman they had never met, but I shuddered at the danger these innocent people had been put in (good job Ms. Alford 👏👏).

The character development was not very deep as so much of the book was focused on the action, still, you got a sense that Aaron was an honorable man who was willing to risk a lot to protect the woman he felt needed his help. There were a couple of references through the story about the "things he had done that were against the Amish beliefs" or what he would do that was against those beliefs to help someone he had just met. This seemed a bit implausible and made me wonder if he was really as honorable as he appeared.

Victoria seemed to struggle with the things she had done which went against Amish beliefs and wanted to be part of a simpler life but knew that would not happen as long as she was fighting for her life.

She seemed like a determined character who would not let anything so simple as a wound or exhaustion get in the way of her doing what she could to get justice for her dead partner. And she fought like a lion to protect the people who were trying to help her.

There was a theme running through the story that though we may fear our sins are unforgivable, God is willing to forgive us if we come to Him with a repentant heart.

Covert Amish Christmas is a thrilling read that will require you to suspend belief a bit (but what good novel doesn't?) It will definitely grab your attention and hold it.

I honestly did not know what to expect for this little book. I mean it has two of the things I enjoy reading combined into one: suspense and Amish story! It was a very quick read, at least for me. It was fast paced and had a good amount of suspense with it. The characters were good and for the most part well written. We meet former CIA agent Victoria who is hiding out in Amish country and in the process of falls for Aaron. I have a love/hate relationship with the Love Inspired books. I love to read them because they are short and sweet but I hate that the romance seems to move so quickly! But its understandable I mean again its a very quick read!

I think the author did a great job with the story. The plot is very well done and kept me pretty engaged throughout. That being said this was a book that took me a bit to fully get into. Maybe it was the mood I was in but I struggled at times to fully connect with it. Overall I thought it was a quick read and had its sweet moments.

Alford's writing is intense and I love how she made me look over my shoulder at times as Victoria and Aaron are put through their paces.
I read this in the night which is my favorite time to read. It didn't take me long to read. I finished it in an hour or so.
I feel like I've read this story before or one like it. It did seem familiar. But, that's OK. It didn't hurt to read it again.
Stories like this are awesome!
A great story from start to finish.
One that will keep you spellbound and holding your breath waiting to see what happens next!
So buckle up for a very fast ride!
Highly recommend.

I was able to read this one pretty quickly and finished in one day. It was very fast paced and that kept me turning the pages. There was a good bit of suspense to this story. I did feel that the romance thread was a little too rushed, but I get it since the book is only so long. Some of the scenes felt a little unrealistic, but it wasn’t too bad. I would like to see Ethan get his own story since I liked him a lot. This was my first book by this author. It wasn’t too bad.

I was given a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author, but was not required to write a review. The thoughts and comments are my own.

Covert Amish Christmas by Mary Alford is one that was a quick read, by provided suspense all the way through. You will never know what will happen next! It’s packed full of twists and turns the entire way, all the while hoping Victoria would get all the answers she was searching for. It was full of love - lost love, family love and new love. You will definitely see yourself rooting for her. Without giving anyway away, it’s worth the read...and one you definitely won’t want to put down!

Amish Covert Christmas is a very thrilling story written by Mary Alford. This is a suspense inspirational love story. The author has done a tremendous job bringing this story to life through her well developed characters. There is never a full moment throughout this entire story. I found it extremely hard to put it down. The story starts out with a band and it continued that way from the start. The mystery involved in this story will really have you questioning some of those involved.

Victoria Kauffman is an active CIA agent trying to figure out the reason behind her boyfriend's death which occurred in Afghanistan. Now back in the USA she still finds her life in jeopardy but hasn't been able to figure out the clues left to her. When an Amish man, Aaron Shelter finds her hiding in his barn suffering a bullet wound to her leg he instantly knows he has to protect her. What these two experience throughout the story will definitely have readers wondering how it will all turnout. At the conclusion Victoria knows her death is near and at the hands of someone very unexpected. With Aaron shot and left for dead she has all but given up.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not expected to post a favorable response. All opinions are my own but honest. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Mary Alford on releasing another story filled with suspense, drama, love, faith, and forgiveness. This story is just amazing.

Covert Amish Christmas by Mary Alford has Victoria Kauffman on the run for her life. She is a former CIA agent who has evidence of wrongdoing by CIA operatives. The guilty parties, though, have no intention of letting Victoria turn over that evidence and will do whatever it takes to stop her. Victoria gets shot and ends up at the farm of Aaron Shetler. Aaron finds himself on the run with Victoria trying to keep them safe and the bad guys away from his family. Will they be able to turn over the evidence necessary to stop the guilty parties? Covert Amish Christmas is a fast-paced suspense novel. It is full of action from the very first chapter. I found Covert Amish Christmas to be well-written with steady pacing and a complex main character. Victoria is a complicated woman which I liked. I enjoyed the descriptions of Aaron’s beautiful hand-crafted furniture. I could feel the tension and danger as Victoria, Aaron, and the others attempted to elude the bad guys and stay safe. I found myself quickly turning the pages to see how this tale would turn out. I wish the mystery had been harder to solve, but that is just the puzzle solver in me. I appreciated the epilogue which nicely wrapped up the story. Covert Amish Christmas has action, intrigue, mystery, romance, and suspense (what more could you ask for). Covert Amish Christmas is a page turner that will have you captivated until the very end.

This was truly a non-stop action and suspense novel! I honestly could not imagine how these characters were going to make it out of this story alive. Knowing that this was a Love Inspired Suspense novel, I knew that they would make it out alive and that things would work out, however, I just couldn’t see how the author was going to manage it.

Along with all of the danger and constant pursuit that the characters faced, both Victoria and Aaron carried guilt in their lives. It was different guilt for both of them, but it weighed them down nonetheless. The themes of forgiveness and God’s love were prevalent throughout the story.

Covert Amish Christmas was a high energy read, with main characters who had a heart for doing what was right and a desire to do what would please God.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This is one intense, fast paced story filled with action that you wonder how Victoria and Aaron will survive. Victoria had to rely on her previous training to keep alive. Aaron’s determination not to let Victoria go alone found his life in danger too. The unexpected happenings, a longing for her past, overcoming their feelings of guilt from the past, and lives in the balance made this an enthralling suspense. Mary Alford knows how to create a story that will keep readers turning the page until the end.

Covert Amish Christmas, by Mary Alford, grabbed my attention from the first page and held it to the last. Lots of suspense, tension, danger, and a bit of romance as readers follow Victoria, former CIA agent, as she finds refuge in the peaceful Amish community of West Kootenai, Montana. Ruthless enemies are after her and seem to find her wherever she hides. As the enemy discovers her once again, Victoria seeks help from an Amish widower, Aaron. Could they stay alive long enough to find the answers for which Victoria searches? Would two wounded souls be able to find happiness amidst the turmoil of the danger in which they find themselves embroiled? Mary Alford is a marvelous storyteller. She crafts believable characters, her writing is strong and poetic, and edge-of-the-seat action and twists to the plot are infused into the narrative, keeping the pages turning. Readers who enjoy Love Inspired Suspense stories full of courage, danger, and faith will not want to miss Covert Amish Christmas.

Victoria, a CIA agent who receives information on a conspiracy within the agency is trying to understand the proof left to her by another agent who died. On the run, she flees to the Amish community and gains the help of Aaron. Aaron and some of his friends and family try to keep her safe as she runs from her assailants.

The story is highly suspenseful with lots of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Having Aaron be Amish gave another side to the storyline that I normally don't see in a suspense novel. His struggle with violence in order to protect Victoria showed true courage and conviction. Victoria is carrying a secret that she keeps from Aaron that also adds mystery to the story.

Covert Amish Christmas is a page-turner steeped with intrigue, compassion, forgiveness, and faith. The blossoming romance amongst all the turmoil gave another interesting quality to the story.

The inspirational and uplifting message brought the story to life for me. Very enjoyable and exciting read. Highly recommended.

This was a fun and action-packed read! Victoria mad e a great main character. She had a surprising amount of depth, and I found my heart really going out to her and all her struggles. The plot was well done and kept me relatively gripped throughout the entire novel. I will say, however, this was not my favorite Love Inspired Suspense book or my favorite Amish book.

While I really enjoyed Victoria’s character, I found myself struggling to connect with this book. This is definitely more of just a personal opinion, as opposed to a critique to the book itself, though! Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for it while I read it?

Regardless, Covert Amish Christmas was an entertaining and quick read. If you love sweet and wholesome romances with lots of action, then I would definitely recommend giving this book a read!

I picked up this book on a whim while at Wal-Mart and I'm glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't what I would regard as a "typical" Amish book. There was a lot of action. The plot was full of twists and turns that kept you reading. It was like watching an episode of an action-y tv show. I hadn't read anything by this author before, but I will read her again.

Christmas + Suspense = Count me in!

I am a sucker for a fast paced, action packed, Christmas story and boy does Mary Alford deliver it in spades with this book. From the first page to the last I was enthralled by the plot, the characters, and the Christmas theme. While a little over the dramatic (not very dramatic, just a few instances that fit well with the story line), I enjoyed the characters struggles and the underlying message of God being able to forgive all our sins no matter how big or small. Definitely a good read and Mary Alford is a new to me author that I will look for in the future.

If you're looking for a high paced suspense to read this holiday season, look no further than Covert Amish Christmas.

The action in this book started right from the very beginning as we meet Victoria- a former CIA agent running for her life from corrupt agents responsible for her partner's death. To do so, she has taken cover in a cabin near Amish country-- a way of life that she had left years ago as a child. When the agents find her there, she seeks refuge once again in the barn of Amish widower Aaron. He quickly finds himself brought into the chase... and intrigued by this unexpected woman in his life. Together, they do everything they can to stay alive in this story that is nonstop action from start to finish. Just when I thought that perhaps I'd be able to breathe for a moment and things might slow down, they would once again find themselves back on the run. It certainly kept me on my toes.

Aside from the suspense, it had a really great faith aspect as well as we saw the characters trusting in God to keep them safe. I really enjoyed that about it myself. I also enjoyed the romance, though I found it to be not too overwhelming so I think even those who prefer their suspense without the romance could probably enjoy it too. While the story takes place at Christmastime and there are mentions of such, it didn't read much like your typical Christmas story and as such could truly be read anytime throughout the year! Overall, if you're looking for a fast past read, this is definitely one worth checking out.

Former CIA agent Victoria is hiding out in the Amish country. She is determined to seek evidence on the corrupt agents who killed her partner. She meets an amish widower, Aaron, who is the only person she can trust. With people after them they lean on each other to protect Aaron's family and bring the corrupted people to justice.

This was a cute mystery. Victoria used to be apart of the Amish community before her mother died and I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the book and learn to trust again. I really just thought it was cute and heartwarming. The mystery part wasn't all that surprising. It was action packed however so I did appreciate that. It was a fast read.

Covert Amish Christmas by Mary Alford is a action packed, suspenseful addition to the Love Inspired Suspense series. I have read several books by this author and she is an amazing story teller. In this story - we see former CIA agent Victoria Kauffman trying to figure out which one of her former coworkers was responsible for her partner's death. Victoria was in love with her partner and she wants to see justice served. She is hiding out in serene and peaceful Amish Country. However, the bad guys will find out where she is. One of the things I loved is how the Amish community helped her. Victoria has ties to the Amish due to her past.
Amish widower, Aaron saves Victoria when she is found with a gunshot wound. Aaron knows he must protect her. He puts his own life on the line to do so, while still grieving the loss of his wife.

This book is filled with action and suspense. You will want to stay up reading and try to figure it out. Just when you think they are safe --- Boom more action.
I love how the author develops her characters. You see their backstory and get to know them. I love how she put so much action and suspense into this book. You will NOT be disappointed.

Covert Amish Christmas is one of those books that left me with mixed feelings.

There are parts of this novel that I really enjoyed. From the first page, the suspense begins and doesn't let up until the very end, which I love. Though my heart goes out to Victoria and the unfortunate situation that she finds herself in, I found myself struggling to connect with her, and honestly I'm not sure, because I found myself instantly charmed by Aaron. From the moment you meet Aaron you can see that he is a man of integrity, wanting to do the right thing, and right the wrongs of his past, and I admire that so much.

Though you do get backstories on both Aaron and Victoria there is a lot of repetition as each character has inner dialogue and both struggle with memories and regrets of the past. The ending was way too predictable, begging the question: if Victoria was a former CIA agent why did she not pick up on what was way too obvious to the reader?

Despite getting a little bored in the middle, I kept reading in hopes of a surprise that never came into fruition, and I had to see where Aaron and Victoria would end up.

I closed Covert Amish Christmas with disappointment, and was torn on how to rate it. The writing is great, as is the imagery of the picturesque Amish community, and I don't regret reading it, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a little let down with what could've been an incredible read instead of an ok read.

Covert Amish Christmas, by Mary Alford, is a modern day story of a CIA agent, Victoria, who is on the run for her life. Since the death of her very special friend, she has been on the run. She is now using her birth given name and is in Amish country. But her location has once again been found and she ends up injured in Aaron's shop. The bad guys are right behind her and in large numbers. Aaron takes his family to stay with another family member and goes along with Victoria on the run of their life.
This is a fast paced story that just keep.
This well written story will keep the readers attention and keep the reader guessing as to who the bad guy is. There are several things that stand out to me in this story. Despite the fact Amish do not believe in violence, Aaron is ready to do so, if needed, for a person he has just met. For being a CIA agent, the actions they take are often unbelievable. As the story progresses it is easy to guess who the bad guy was close to the end of the story.

What a fun read!  This is a fast-paced quick read.  I read it all in one sitting.  You get invested in the characters and because the book is reading fast and the actions are happening fast you just need to keep going!

You've got an ex-CIA agent.  The man that she had hoped to marry is killed on a mission.  But before he died he gave her evidence and told her that the person behind his death is one of their own.  What a shock!

So now she's trying to figure out who it is and time is running out for her.  People keep trying to kill her and they almost succeed.  Even after she moves back to the place of her childhood and assumes the first name she went by they still find her!  How if someone on the inside she trusts isn't betraying her!?

I loved it!  It wasn't your normal Amish fiction in that our heroine was Amish as a child but when her mother dies she becomes English to live with distant family.  Now she's back in her old community and life is definitely not easy.  She's reluctant to trust anyone.  And even more reluctant to trust anyone with her heart.

But when she must trust someone with her safety and endanger them as well things start getting dicey.  She's still being followed and anyone could lose their life at any moment.  Will she survive?  Will she become Amish again or go to a quiet English life?

Definitely a book to read now!  It's wonderful and I loved it.  I just wish it was longer.

I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Covert Amish Christmas
By Mary Alford

Victoria Kauffman has spent the last year running for her life. Since her partner and unit were killed on an operation gone horribly wrong she's been trying to stay one step ahead of rogue CIA operatives whom she believes are behind everything. She just needs to find the proof-there is just one problem she has no idea what she is looking for. And worse is the guilt over the life she has led as a CIA agent, the things she has done eat at her, stealing any hope for peace.

Aaron Shelter has been living with his guilt over his wife's death, no matter what anyone thinks he knows it is his fault she didn't seek the help she needed sooner. When he finds a woman in need of his help he isn't about to repeat the mistakes of the past. But this time offering help could get him and those he loves killed.

As Victoria, Aaron, and his family spend Christmas trying to elude ruthless killers, Victoria's only hope lies with contacting her former commander. But when you are in the heart of Amish country communication is not easily accomplished.

If you are a fan of Amish suspense that is a clean read you will enjoy this offering from the Love Inspired Suspense brand. At times Victoria and Aaron's dwelling on their guilt can be a little much but overall this was a good read. All the action takes place in approximately a day so there is a lot crammed into this time period but that is to be expected with these books. I will admit I had a few suspicions as to who was the guilty party so don't be surprised if you aren't surprised at the reveal of the mastermind.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

I am DEFINITELY NOT the target audience for this book, but I purchased it for a whole dollar from the local thrift shop because I saw the cover and thought to myself: Ah, yes. The premise of this book sounds so batshit crazy that it's guaranteed to be entertaining. A former CIA agent named Victoria returns to the small Amish community in which she was raised (until age 6) to hide from members of her old faction who are hunting her. While there, she gets help from none other than a brooding Amish widower named Aaron. I did not pick up this book anticipating a literary masterpiece. I did not pick up this book expecting beautiful prose or intricate symbolism or themes that transcend the small West Kootenai Amish town in which it's set.

No, I wanted this book to be an unapologetic mess of CIA, high-action shenanigans and Amish romance. I wanted to be swept up in the chaos of this unlikely cross-over event to such a degree that I temporarily forgot my problems on this mortal coil. I wanted ACTION. I wanted ROMANCE. I wanted ESCAPISM. I didn't want it to be good; I wanted it to be ENTERTAINING.

Alas, this book failed in all of those regards.

THE ACTION:

- The action in this one was weak, and it wasn't for lack of trying. From the very first chapter of the book, Victoria is bombarded with these rogue CIA agents who are hunting her. They break into her house and she runs into the woods. They follow her into the woods to Aaron's house. Victoria (with Aaron and family now in tow), flee to Aaron's brother's house, where they are followed YET AGAIN. There is not a moment of the book where these two aren't either being chased of the CIA determined to kill Victoria OR trying to get back to Victoria's cabin so she can get her ~super secret~ information back before it can land in the wrong hands. The reader is so inundated with this action that it's actually ridiculous. I mean, JUST as we think these two might get a moment to breathe, they see him in the distance! Another CIA agent who has been following them! And another shootout commences.

- Speaking of shootouts, Victoria starts out this book by being shot as she runs away from the men who are hunting her, and it's BAD, right? Even if it didn't hit anything vital, it's still bleeding and she almost passes out in the woods somewhere. But somehow after having Aaron's kind, matronly, Amish mother tend to her wounds, she's feeling good enough to be up and running around again? It's genuinely ridiculous how many times both of these characters get shot over the course of 48 hours and STILL have the energy and wherewithal to keep running through the woods, getting into shootouts, and jumping into rivers. (I'm not kidding, Victoria jumps into a river at one point to evade capture, and this is in MONTANA in DECEMBER. This woman should be dead.)

- The above two things might not seem like valid criticisms--after all, this is a SUSPENSE Inspired Romance ❤️ Shouldn't there be action to create suspense? Shouldn't being chased by the CIA create some STAKES? Unfortunately, it doesn't in this book. The (mostly) faceless CIA agents chasing them are so cartoonishly persistent and somehow have a supernatural sense for where they are at all times (like the zombies from 7 Days to Die), that the stakes are completely flattened. There's no time for suspense to build because the reader never needs to wonder if/when the protagonists will be caught up to next. They're always in a state of being caught up to. Suspense needs time to build, and this book doesn't take the time to build it. Combine that with the fact that our heroes never really get hurt and always manage to escape them means that it feels like the CIA agents don't feel like a realistic threat. Our characters take bullets, sure, but neither of them sacrifices anything over the story or have to adapt to significant changes. Also, the constant cat-and-mouse chase leads to my next disappointment...

THE ROMANCE:

- Looks, I understand that at the end of the day, this is an Amish romance. I didn't come here looking for erotica (or "spice" as the tiktok girlies call it), but when I tell you that this romantic arc had as much flavor as a sack of all-purpose flour, I mean it. Victoria and Aaron are at very different places in life and have lived different lifestyles over the past several years. Aaron is a humble Amish family man still grieving his wife, whose death and illness he blames himself for (even though it was cancer). Victoria was raised Amish up until she was 6, when her parents died and she was adopted out to a non-Amish family, and then went into the CIA, where she has since been responsible for the deaths of several people )by her own admission). Their internalized guilt over these things is the exact extent of her romantic tension. Almost all of the romance is conveyed by way of telling instead of showing. We, the reader, are constantly told that they think they might be falling in love with each other, but we don't get many opportunities to actually see it happening.

- One of causes for the telling instead of showing of the romance is, I think, because of how little downtime Victoria and Aaron have with each other. As stated before, the book takes place of 48 hours, and most of those hours are spent running around and being shot at. It's not exactly fertile ground for a romance to grow. There was exactly ONE moment that I thought might have carried some romantic weight and that was the scene they spend in an old cabin huddled together by a fire for warmth, but nothing actually happens at this point? And they leave after like an hour or so even though it's a blizzard out? I wasn't expecting them to bone but I WAS expecting some tension or hints of emotional intimacy or a heartfelt chat that got diverted at the last moment and we got NONE OF THAT. It was such a missed opportunity. There are a few other moments in the book that were a bit romantic but it wound up not feeling earned. I can't say I don't understand what Victoria and Aaron are attracted to in each other, since the novel feels the need to tell the reader directly, but I can say that I didn't FEEL it.

- These two said their "I love you's" within FORTY EIGHT HOURS. This wouldn't be unforgivable, but again, I felt nothing for these two.

OTHER MISC COMPLAINTS:

- Logan was a terrible villain. May as well have not had a name. This man's motive was as tangible as a fart in the wind.

Tl;Dr: I really wanted to have fun with this one, but it didn't play into its own concept enough IMO. This will probably be the first and last Harlequin romance I read.

I know this was going to be a great book from the moment I read the first few pages. The author has always been consistent in giving a story filled with intrigue, twists, danger and an inspirational message . Victoria is in real danger when men come after her willing to do anything to silence her. She has information that could cost her her life. I loved how the setting is near where she grew up. It was interesting to know that at one time she was Amish.

I’m sure it isn’t every day that you find a young woman shot in your shop. Aaron is shocked when he discovers an unconscious Victoria. Now he knows that the shots he heard during the night must have been directed at this woman. I loved how Aaron took her in and found a safe place for her. He has put his life and others in danger to help someone he doesn’t know. It is a good example of helping those in need.

Victoria is determined to see justice and will stop at nothing to make them pay for the death of not only her partner but the man she loved. To think people in the CIA that she worked with could be tracking her is hard to believe. Whatever evidence she has needs to stay secure until she can turn it over to someone she trusts.

The author gives us a little background on Victoria’s past. Losing her parents at a young age was devastating. Years past and she had almost forgotten about her Amish heritage. She thinks she is not worthy to be forgiven of things she has done. Aaron blames himself for his wife’s death. They both need a touch from God. Through the danger they face with bullets flying and men chasing them, will they find safety?

This is a non stop action story that kept me on my toes. Just as I think Aaron and Victoria are safe, more men surround their hiding place. They are ruthless and are determined to take out anyone who could divulge their secret. Greed, money and power feed their evil side. I think this is the best story the author has written. I couldn’t wait to get to the end because I believed that God would protect those in harms way. It is a great story about letting go of your past, doing the right thing and trusting God.

“Our future will not be defined by the past, but by what we make of it together.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Covert Amish Christmas. Mary writes wonderful Amish stories but she also writes awesome suspense stories so this book is amazing. This one is well written, action packed, and full of faith. I know you are going to love it.

CIA Agent Victoria Kauffman is hiding in a little cabin in Amish country. The cabin is close to where she had been brought up. She had been Amish until her mother had died when she was five. Staying here brought back so many memories, she longed for that simple life but she could never go back after all she had done. As she considers her life her a heavy object is slammed into her door. She leaves through a back window. How had they found her? She runs through the snow and ice of the Montana country side. She is injured but manages to stay on her feet. She finds a workshop where she can hide.

Aaron Shetler is a furniture maker. He is a widower with a thirteen year old sohn; they lived with his mamm. He and his family hear gun shots. He goes to check outside when they finish their meal. As he checks he can see men walking around out in the fields. Uneasiness comes upon him. The door to the shop stands slightly open. Inside he finds a young woman with a gunshot wound in her leg. Before he can help her his sohn shows up asking if she's dead. They are greeted by a gun pointed at them by the woman. Aaron feels he must help her after he hears her story.

A terrifying journey to escape CIA operatives that are determined to kill this witness and have no problem with collateral damage. God has a plan for these people; a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and He will make a way for you where there seems to be no way.

This story was pretty much non-stop action from the first page. Throwing together a spy and an Amish man at Christmas time made for quite a read. This certainly was not your usual Amish story.

Victoria is an ex CIA agent who is still reeling from the death of her team. Not only that but she believes the very organization she used to work for is gunning for her. Well, someone certainly is and they prove that they will stop at nothing, not even for the Amish to get to her and her evidence. Victoria had a great plan especially since she was Amish in her young life. But somehow her every move is known.

Aaron is an Amish man who meets Victoria in a time when she really needs help. And he has first hand knowledge of how these men would treat her. As a man, Aaron feels a responsibility to protect Victoria along with his mother and son.

If you are looking for an out of the box Amish story that is a thriller and takes place during Christmas time, than look no further than this read. This was a quick and fast paced edge of your seat story. I did enjoy it, no matter how implausible it seemed, just for it's uniqueness and great fiction escape.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
