After losing almost their entire clan to illness, Alexander MacCoinnich and his three brothers, his best friend, and two cousins have been forced to become mercenaries. They have honor, however, and only fight for those Alexander deems worthy, even if they sometimes face accusations of "traitor." When he and his brother are badly injured and the group all face death from exposure following the deadly Glencoe Massacre, they find themselves at Clan Neal's keep under the care of her mistress, Catriona. She has acted as lady of the keep since her mother's death, striving to keep her deathbed promise to protect the clan from her cruel father, the chieftain, as well as her equally cruel twin brother, Calum. Her father's death only makes things worse as Calum proves himself to be even more sadistic and evil than their father was.

With the future of Clan Neal looking very bleak indeed, Alexander could be Catriona's salvation, but she has to decide it it's worth leaving her clan to their own fate. Alexander is considering giving up his warring ways to settle down and have something stable to offer Catriona. But when her father's death unleashes Calum and the clan's fear of him gives him power, it may be too late for Catriona to escape her own fate, much less save her kin from theirs.

This book gave me an enormous sense of suspense and danger almost from the very beginning. No one is who they seem and you don't really know who has the power or who can be trusted. Alexander was a fantastic hero, the classic big and strong type. Catriona has always been alone until this point, since her mother's death. Meeting Alexander gives her the first real hope she's had in a long time and she proves to be quite the fighter, especially when she learns things about her family that are even more sordid than she had expected. Alexander makes Catriona feel safe and she knows he's a danger to her heart just as well as she knows he's a mercenary and she can't hope to keep him by her side. Catriona also fears the loss of her people to her brother's evil and her dire situation arouses Alexander's protectiveness and makes him determined to help her. The danger brings the two together quickly, but in a believable way.

Ms. Greyson has given us a group of great heroes that are truly likable and I look forward to learning more about each and their backstories in future installments of this very promising series.

I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Love💕 Among The Ruins🏰

Alpha Male Adult Romance💕 and Adventure🔪🔫

Huge Scots warrior, Alex MacCoinnich🐺🍆🌋🔪🔫, and his brothers and clan are at MacDonald's Keep fighting for their lives. Burned out, shot with muskets, wounded by swords and knives🔪, his clan barely escapes through a hidden tunnel.

Half dead, and shot three times, Alex🐺🍆🌋🔪🔫 is brought to Neal's Keep, a small remote keep in Ben Nevis. The Chieftain there is a drunk and has left the running of the place to his daughter Catriona💃💋 and her twin brother, Callum👺. The bulk of the work falls on Catriona💃💋, since her brother is a mean, drunken wastrel👺 who takes after his father.

With lots of TLC from Catriona💃💋, Alex🐺🍆🌋🔪 recovers, and realizes he and Cat💃💋 are meant for each other. Her dad and Callum of course stand in their way of happiness.

The Cheiftain
Highlander's Heart and Soul #1
By Maeve Greyson

Alexander MacCoinnich is a mercenary, but what sets him apart from the rest is that he doesn't just do it for the heck of it. He only does it for those who he seems worth his time. The fact that they have to be able to afford it isn't just an afterthought. There are times that his services have at times provoked accusations of rebel and even traitor not to mention the fact that they sometimes take him across countries and kingdoms. For as long as he can remember this lifestyle has suited him, until now that is. Now he has a choice to make. Does he remain a soldier or does he give it all up to save the woman who saved him?

Catriona Neal is and has been the lady of Clan Neal's keep since her mother's dying wish left her striving to keep a promise. She promised to shield the clan from her Father, the cruel cheiftain. Over the years she found ways to manipulate her Father's orders for the good of her clan. She has always done her best to keep the promise she made to her Mother however that came at a great cost to herself. She can never marry. You see her brother the man who will become cheiftain when her father dies is even meaner then her father. Now she needs to find a way to keep protecting her people.

Could Alexander be the answer to her prayers or will he be the end of everything she has tried to protect? Does she risk it all?

Maeve Greyson is a master when it comes to story telling. She blends the perfect amount of history with romance and her main characters are so perfect together. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one.

Alexander MacCoinnich’s clan was mostly wiped out due to sickness he’s be forced by circumstances to become mercenary along with is three brothers, his best friend, and two cousins. Alex and his brother Graham are badly injured in the deadly Glencoe Massacre and they’re all forced to escape and flee to some caves to escape discovery. They are found wounded and half dead from the winter weather and taken to Clan Neal.
Clan Neal’s futures is looking very bleak indeed the Laird is ill, but he’s a brutish laird and his oldest son set to inherit is even more sadistic than his father. Catriona Neal has been the lady of Clan Neal's keep since her mother's dying request left her striving to keep a promise and she’s been protecting the clan as best she can ever since. Catriona nurses Alexander back to health, she wonders what it would be like to have such a husband to take of her clan, but she knows she can never leave Clan Neal after her deathbed promise to her mother, but is Alexander their salvation.
Alex sees and realizes how her dire situation is and it definitely arouses Alex's protectiveness and makes him determined to help her any way he can. What Catriona and the Clan need is a strong leader, a man with compassion, a proven warrior to protect them all, and to lead them. Alex and Catriona grow closer it becomes clear something must be done about her brother and his sadistic ways. A great story filled with betrayal, loyalty, rugged highlanders and a romance filled with fiery passion. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

The Chieftain
A Highlander’s Heart and Soul Novel
by Maeve Greyson

Alexander MacCoinnich is a man who has principles and honour, even though he’s a mercenary he’s honest! Though he’s been labeled a traitor he chooses his fights. After a job gone wrong he’s injured and barely makes it to safety alive. His brothers find help with the Clan Neal. And his life is forever changed!

Catriona Neal has been taking care of her family and clan ever since her father got ill, which was a blessing for he was an evil man who thrived on fear and torture for his people. Unfortunately for Catriona her twin brother is just like their father!
Things change for Catriona and Alexander a journey of hope and love begin. But before their life together begins there’s plenty of intrigue and mystery. A vilain asking for retribution, plenty of heart pounding action and lots of sizzling chemistry!

This was an exceptional story, Maeve Greyson has a magical gift of pulling the reader in to the story, a very enjoyable read!
Highly recommend to lovers of Highlander Romance.

I recieved a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

The Chieftain (A Highlander's Heart and Soul Novel - Book 1) by Maeve Greyson was an excellent book! Loved it from start to finish, and can't wait to see if all the other men of Alexander's group of mercenary soldiers get their own stories.

This book has so much going on, during a time of war between Scotland and England, and tempers are short fused and fever pitched. Fighting for the wrong side could be considered treason and a fast ticket to death.

Then there are castles tucked away in the remote parts of Ben Nevin in the Highlands where cruelty knows no bounds, and a deathbed promise to her mother has Catriona in a daily struggle to protect the people of Clan Neal from her drunken, extremely cruel father, and her very cruel twin brother Calum and his faithful cronies.

After a battle lost trying to save the McDonald clan for the Lord of Islay, a gravely wounded Alexander, his brothers and friends manage to escape the Campbell's, but are later found nearly dead and frozen by the hunters of Clan Neal. They are carefully tended, and Catriona has taken on Alexander's care herself. When he finally puts the fever behind him, he wakes to see and hear things are not what they should be in this castle hall. He witnesses Calum strike Catriona viciously, and is incensed that he is still tied to the table and cannot help her. Alexander has begun to have feelings for the lovely young woman who has so tirelessly cared for him, his men and her people too.

There is intrigue, escapes gone wrong and the consequences of trying to escape. There is deep loyalty and friendship amongst Alexander and his men, and a new and wonderous love growing between Catriona and Alexander!

This is just a great page turner, and I can't wait to read the next installment in the series!!!!

I must say this story is very worthy of a solid 5 star rating! I loved this story from start to finish and there was definitely not a dull moment.

Alexander MacCoinnich, whose clan was mostly wiped out due to sickness, is now a hired mercenary, along with his brothers, best friend and 2 cousins. After a skirmish, he and one of his brothers gets badly hurt and while they are all hiding in a cave, they get rescued and brought to the Clan Neal's keep. Alexander is at death's door with all his injuries but is saved by the lady of the keep, Catriona Neal.

Catriona is a very strong and stubborn miss but is at the mercy of her evil father and sadistic twin brother. All she wants to do is protect her clan from their evilness, which is not always easy! As she cares for Alexander, a tender connection is made but she fears nothing can come of it because she had made a promise to her mother on her deathbed that she would never abandon the clan. As for Alexander, he has nothing to offer her.....but love always has a way to make things work out:)

What follows is quite the adventure and I thought the whole story was very well written. Catriona and Alexander are so perfect for each other!! Now I look forward to Graham's story....

I will first say what a wonderful book, the storyline was different from her other books, and I will say I really loved it. Well written, page turner, I want more. Alexander, is a brawn highlander who is severely wounded and has a angel looking after him. He has not the energy to fight this angel any longer, and knows in his heart he cannot have her. He is a protector of innocents and must be so for her as well. He is torn between what is right, and what he wants.
Catriona, is a strong willed woman, who has been protecting her people as promised to her mother on her deathbed. So when men are brought to her keep, she has no other choice but to help them, heal them, as best as she can.
Love the wit of these two, and the charismatic way he woes her. And how she is stunned on how she feels for the male figure.
But they both will do whatever it takes to bring justice to those she has vowed to protect, even from her deranged father, and brother.
If you like mystery, romance and danger, you will love this.
This books has all the elements of a wonderful read, with lots of mystery, romance, lies, truths and mistrust.
This was given to me by the author and I am giving a honest review, of her new book, "The Chieftain".

An enthralling story with lots of fighting and death as was the norm during that historical time in Scotland when war ravaged that nation. But amidst all that, two people were able to find love and rid their keep of all the evil that had been hurting their people for a long time. The hero, Alexander was a great highlander warrior who totally fell for the headstrong Catriona. Watching their love develop was wonderful, all while trying to stay alive with foiled rescues and defeating the bad guys. It was pretty intense at times. But I'm glad to say it did end with an HEA which is to be expected in a romance. And since this story was a romance there were still some sexy times between Alexander and Catriona in between fighting for their lives. Overall an enjoyable read.

I don't usually read straight historical romance because I either tend to get bored with it if there isn't some sort of weird or paranormal type twist put on it or the author tends to go back and forth between keeping the characters authentic to their time period and making them more "modern" which just gets annoying. However The Chieftain was an incredibly enjoyable read for me, Meave Greysons characters were consistent throughout the story and were all well developed and easy to relate to and care about. I also loved that the heroine of the story was not a weak willed woman who couldn't do anything herself but was strong and fiery and didn't just sit on the sidelines while the men did all the important things! I truly look forward to the next offering in this series!

Exciting adventure

Alexander, a mercenary, is badly wounded and brought to Tor Ruadh along with his brothers, cousins and friend. Catriona is the daughter of the laird. She nurses him to health. She is drawn to Alexander from the beginning and vice versa. There is a lot going on at Tor Ruadh. Callum, Catriona's twin, is a disturbed man and the more you get into the book, the more you understand why. He is cruel. Catriona is trying to keep the people of her clan protected but it comes to the point where she isn't strong enough to do so. Callum will be the next laird. Their father is also a depraved drunkard. The story was very exciting in many areas. There is betrayal but humor. You will love this book.

I was really excited to read about this book because it was set on Scotland and after watching outlander I got excited.

However I’m at 22% of the book and the writing is just not it, it’s so weird because when you are reading about both main characters they already know about each other but they have never talked, like alexander was injured and he already knew where he was and everything when he woke up and then Catriona already knew who he was all of his brothers and everything. They haven’t even talked so it was kind of weird like nothing has happened at all, the only thing that has happened is that Catriona and Alexander have talked and Catriona has gone to her fathers chambers to talk that’s it so no I won’t keep reading this book it’s it’s just not for me it’s not interesting

I love Alexander MacCoinnich. He is a mans man. He has a sense of purpose, is loyal and believes in his family. He will fight for what is right. Catriona Neal is smart and caring. She made a promise and plans to keep it. Her twin brother Callum is making her life difficult. When trouble comes, Catriona can count on Alexander and his brothers and cousins. Callum has brought the trouble to their door. You will love the 2 scrappy young lads in this book. Alexander and Catriona find their way to each other. I enjoyed reading this book.

Alexander and his brothers are mercernaries for hire. They get in a pickle when they get in an ambushed encounter with the campbells. They manage to escape but barely. Catronia enters the picture. She is trying to protect her clan. Her father is failing and her brother is just as mean as her father. She's hoping to keep it all together. Can Alexander and Catronia find true love and save her clan or will the king interfer.

Truly a great story, delightful and entertaining. The tale takes place in the Scottish Highlands during a time in history when a great upheaval was beginning for the highland clans. Catriona and Alexander’s adventure, their thoughts and emotions were described in a detail that made them come alive. Once I started reading, I didn’t want the adventure to end. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

My very first book by this author. It was good. The plot was good and the emotion well written. The relationship between the Hero and Heroine was sufficient but lacked some little something but I can put my finger on it. There was just something that kept it from a higher rating, but it was still a good book and well worth the read. I plan on reading the next in the series. Plot 61(1-10) steaminess 71(1-10)

Really loved this book. the story is romantic with just enough action and adventure to keep me interested and turning the pages. The book was so good that I refused to put it down to go so sleep and stayed up until 6 AM to finish it. The character development was wonderful, made me feel like I was part of the story. A must read for anyone who enjoys historical romance at its finest. Thanx Maeve for a great days entertainment. Keep up the great work.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*

This was a beautiful story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Catriona was caring, strong and fierce whereas, Alexander was protective and yummy in all the right places;)

Callum made my skin crawl - when Alexander grabbed Callum to teach him a lesson; I was rooting for him all the way. There were a few moments I sympathised with Callum and the horrors he was subjected to.

Fantastic story with lovely characters and an intriguing plot that will leave you wanting more.

I wished I read this book first. I was confused with book highland hero series to this heart and soul novel. Shouldn't this book be first and in highland heroe series. I read The guardian first before I knew about The Chieftain.

I was wondering who those characters were and was interested who they were and now I know.

I should have paid attention.

But anyways

I love the read and how cute and funny Sawny was.
There was time when I slip out, "oh shit" lol

For instance, when Sawny was trying to find the correct key to open the door for his mistress. He said, "Damnation and Demon's balls" lol

Je ressucite Je ressucite Je ressucite!

(((Goosebumps)))

Love it!!
