The investigation into the Homecoming Incident turns deadly in the latest explosive volume of Stephen McCranie's Space Boy!
Amy struggles to adjust to her new life at the FCP, making new friends and reuniting with old ones, all the while haunted by the specters of the night before. Meanwhile, Cassie and Schafer begin to turn up new leads in the case, all the while unaware of the manipulations of mysterious National Security agent, James Silbur. And finally, the truth of Tammie's abduction is revealed to the world, in the newest volume of Stephen McCranie's Space Boy!
Stephen McCranie has been drawing comics since before he could read or write. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Fine Arts and currently lives and works out of a small apartment in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I think I just binge read like... five years worth of weekly webcomic pages. And now I'm going to have to wait for a new page to come out every week. 😭
Well, might as well write a review for what I think of the story so far. It's definitely been a journey. At the beginning I was mostly just reading for the intrigue, and to see what would happen with the characters and the set-up. And of course I also really liked the art style. But then as the story progressed and more of the backstory was revealed... man, my heart really opened up to these characters. Oliver's backstory on the Arno... 😭💔 I'm okay... really. I really enjoyed watching the characters develop and grow. All the relationships, even with their ups and downs just feel so rounded out and wholesome. I love how the author just lets that characters BE the characters. They all have very distinct, strong personalities, even with all their flaws and weaknesses. I just thought they were really well done. I was also happily surprised by the themes in this story. I love the themes of hope, and friendship, and love, and overcoming, and forgiveness... And, like the characters, they are really strong themes, but at the same time, while they might be a bit on-the-nose for some people, I didn't find them to be too preachy. While the plot did seemed a bit rambly or a little slow at points, looking back I'm like... that was actually pretty well paced! There's definitely bits where it's more intrigue and suspense, and then areas where it's more about the character development. Overall, a very solid story. I would give it five stars, but ahhh, I need to know how it ends!! *sigh* Guess I'll just have to be patient....
Another so-so Space Boy volume that makes me realize I really did enjoy my time with Oliver in space. The FCP-as-villain arc is dull and predictable, making it all the more annoying that Amy is drinking their kool-aid. Naturally, her roomie has a tragic backstory and doesn't want to be friends. So, guess what, Amy is going to peel out that backstory and also make a friend.
Maybe this volume just feels more YA than some of Oliver's dark, depressing trapped-in-space volumes. The Wanderer shows up again briefly at the end, revealing itself to be just as confounding as usual. I'm ready for Oliver to meet the Artifact and kickstart the story again. This volume isn't bad (no Space Boy volume is bad), it's just a clear wheel-spinner as we work towards the next big event.
The Space Boy graphic novel series gets better and better and I find it hard to put down now. I've enjoyed Vols 1 - 12 very much. They were put together in Omnibus editions 1 - 4. As I searched for Omnibus 5, I discovered to my angst that it would not be released until March of 2024! WAIT 6 MONTHS! Egads! So, because I couldn't wait that long (and who could blame me), I discovered that Vols 13 and 14 were already available. I received them a day or so ago and then with anticipation decided to read #13 this morning. 😁 Happiness.
As I started off this review, the story gets better and better. Amy is now a 'prisoner' at FCP HQ in Santangeles (combo of Frisco and Los Angeles.) Langley, the 'evil' head of FCP has made a deal with Amy, letting her join FCP so she can keep in contact with Oliver, aka Space Boy. Qiana is tasked to show Amy the ropes and she does so reluctantly. Back home, the police are investigating the captured robot and FCP responds destructively.
Amy continues to learn about FCP, meets up with Dr Kim. He gives Amy the means to communicate with Oliver who is flying ever closer to the Artifact. Qiana has her own issues. Her mentor has disappeared, supposedly transferred to a new job (a euphemism for a more drastic action). She struggles with loyalty to FCP and her maybe friendship with Amy. We don't see much of Amy's friends back home, except Cassie, still in hospital after the incident at school.
It's a fascinating story, many subplots, wonderful characters and great artwork. I have Vol 14 beside my bedside table and probably will be unable to resist it. Great series, excellent for young adults and also adults. Check it out. (4.5 stars)
Amy has become embedded in the First Contact Project and now spends her time learning about and building relationships with the people who live there. Fans of Agent Qiana Jacobs will be happy to see her taking a larger role as she serves as Amy's guide to the facility and staff.
It's a soap opera episode with a lot of exposition, talking, plotting, bonding, emoting, and just a smidge of action.
Somebody start the funereal dirge. This is the last volume my library has available to loan. And now I’ve finished it. I see no Space Boy in my future for a long, long time.
No real review, but a few comments: The chief of the Kokomo police department has been giving me Miles Morales’ father vibes every since he was introduced in volume 12. I hope he gets to have some Hopper moments of glory. Also, I really felt for Flynn. It’s impressive how McCranie gets you so invested in everyone. It’s all somehow lifelike & relatable in the middle of a futuristic sci-fi world. Without knowing it was coming, the PTSD depiction was honestly a little traumatic to me. Though it does help you understand how your brain is just trying to make sense of things. I’ve never seen it explained visually before, and it really worked. I only wish your brain could learn when to stop the reruns.
Same as vol. 12, I’m marking vol. 13 as read even though it isn’t technically out in this printed format yet because I have already read through the 16 episodes of the webcomic that will included in this volume. Love this series so much and looking forward to being able to look at it again when it comes out in print!
Amy begins to suffer a trauma response to everything that has been happening, and she has an on-page panic attack. But I love that it’s explained in the text in several different ways by different characters, and there’s practical and compassionate tips given to her about getting through them.
It does sort of mean not a lot happens in this issue, but it’s really nice representation and I think it’s done well.
Amy meets Dr. Kim again and gets to talk to Oliver unobserved for the first time. As Qiana shows Amy around FCP, Amy wonders how she can help Qiana find her beautiful root flavor. But Qiana actually grows darker as she learns that Saito was permanently removed by someone. And Amy learns that she’s going to need help getting over PTSD from the prom evening experiences.
Ah, these books just read way too quickly. I know I could go online and read more, but I prefer to wait for the next physical book. Even if waiting is a bit torturous. I just love Amy’s heart for others, even when she’s in a bit of a pickle herself.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. A wrongful death is assumed and quiet investigation is started. Amy has nightmares but Qiana is helping her work on her PTSD in positive ways.
I somehow missed this volume and went straight from Vol 12 to 14. And while my reading of 14 didn't suffer from the skip, I thought 13 was such a good volume & I'm really glad I came back for it!
Plot wise, Amy is "settling-in" to the FCP. We meet the creepy James Silber, and we understand why Oliver is upset with/angry at Dr. Kim (and the pressure Dr. Kim feels to build Oliver his next RFP).
Things in this volume I loved: The IT guy. Amy's grace (in forgiving Dr. Kim). And Amy's and Oliver's relationship now that there are no more big secrets between them. ... I'm still so sad about Oliver's family. :'(
I found myself wishing I owned the earlier volumes for a bit here as there was a lot of things referenced that I had to stretch my memory out to try and remember as I had read them so many moons ago. This is where things really seem like everything is beginning to matter. Things are dangerous now for real. Amy is the bright light in all of it but there’s still the sad knowledge that I don’t see how anything good can come for Oliver.
I think it is very impressive how much they have managed to develop the other teens, showing us some of their struggles and interpersonal relationships, including background stuff with their families, etc. Especially Cassie. She is a lot different from how she is initially presented.
This one was hard to get through. The last 2-3 volumes seemed to be riding high, but this one drags. With a slow pace, a lot of talking about feelings and very little Space Boy, it felt like a return to the way too laid back form of the first few volumes. I didn't like it.
This volume is full of emotion. Amy falls into life at the FCP and is reunited with Dr. Kim. She also gets a way to communicate with Oliver. Amy's roommate, Qiana grows in this volume and shows a lot of passion for what she believes in. It feels like we're building to something big.
This volume felt a bit 'in-between' - not a lot happens, but we learn quite a bit of back story that helps to fill in details. As always, eager for the next book!
The story is being so dragged out I can barely remember what's already happened to fully understand what's going on, and this entire volume read like story-pointless filler. Giving up on the series.
