Warrior Kings of Alioth #2

Stained by Starlight

Rate this book
I make the rules. He breaks the rules.
BREE
Life’s a game, and I thought I knew the rules. But the game changed when I was abducted from Earth and sold to an alien pleasure house. New rules? Earn my freedom any way I can.

The fastest route is warming the brutish king’s bed. He’s dominating, possessive, and ruthless with his attentions. He doesn’t just want to claim me as his concubine. He wants to conquer me.

I shouldn’t enjoy that as much as I do.

The more time I spend with him, the more I wonder if I want to be free of him at all.

THREN
My brother has claimed the emperor’s throne—the throne that should have been mine. He’s offered to share his power with me, on one condition: Find and rescue the missing terrakins so they can return to their planet.

I found one. But I have no intention of rescuing her. And I am definitely not returning her.

She’s mine.

My fated queen. My key to power. And possibly my undoing.

Stained by Starlight is a full-length, fated-mates sci-fi romance with lots of steam and a guaranteed happily ever after. If you like resourceful human heroines and the arrogant alien kings who adore them, you’ll fall in love with this series.

A thrilling new installment in the Warrior Kings of Alioth series!
*****
Rating: 5 stars

Genre/Tropes: Alien / Sci-Fi Romance, Fated Mates, Virgin Heroine
*****
Thren is angry, and he is angry at everything. He is furious that his brother Lothran has taken what he believes is rightfully his... the emperor's throne. He is furious that his father misled him and lied to him. He is outraged that his brothers have made fun of him and made him feel less than. When Lothran discovers his Alara, everything for the brothers changes. Thren is hell-bent on obtaining what he believes is his, no matter the cost.

Thren has a plan to usurp Lothran's reign by finding his own "Alara"... even if he has to find a fake queen. What will happen when he finds his true fated queen?

Bree has had a rough life. Abandoned by everyone that was supposed to love her and stay by her side. She grew up with a conman, with strip clubs and poker tables as her classroom. To say she has some serious daddy and abandonment issues is putting it mildly. Now she has been abducted by aliens and sold to a pleasure house until she can pay off her falsified “debt”. What will she do when she catches the Jara’s (King Thren) eye…

Stained by the Starlight was incredible! Thren and Bree's story drew me in immediately, and I was so engrossed by them that I stayed up all night reading. Thren is one of those heroes who makes you want to hug and smack him at the same time, but I do enjoy watching the angry heroes fall. This book has steam to melt your kindle along with your pants, and you can't help but laugh at the banter between these two endearing characters. The plot is becoming more intense, and the twists, turns, and betrayals will have you quickly turning the pages

If you want an engaging plot, fantastic characters, steam and laughter, this is the book/series for you! I want more, and I'll be anxiously waiting for the next book in the series!

I LOVED IT and this book gets all my MUST READ recommendations!

So I was completely unsure if I was going to read this one. Thren in book 1 was just very cold. Beyond arrogant, and dangerous. I did not trust him and there was nothing about his character, for me, that screamed "Omg I can't wait to read his story"... And because book 1 was only an overall decent read, I wasn't really following when I was going to return to this world because I knew Thren was next...

That being said.. this book was awesome 👌 Thren and Bree are incredible together.
Thren is still very much arrogant, but a Jara in his position has to be. So you can't really fault him for this. But also because here, you finally see the many layers of self doubt, confusion, fear, loneliness and longing that explains Thren's cold outer exterior he shows the world. His story and history was heartbreaking to learn. I really hated how he was treated by his father. Which then dictated how his 5 brothers related to him even now. It's heartbreaking to witness how their father manipulated them all..

Then there's Bree. She has her own brand of heartbreak with her own Dad. And the harsh life she has led before being abducted.. But it did truly make her stronger, but it gave strength in areas where most would block it out. Not grow in their compassion and understanding. Bree did the opposite so it made her the perfect mate for Thren. To help him overcome his demons and vice versa for him with her.

This one is a passionate, emotional, & VERY sexual and intense read 📚
I love everything about this one. The secondary characters, the Ghudis were my fave allies too. They were really cool. This one had a lot of hilarious interactions when it came to misunderstandings with the language and cultural differences as well😂

I would definitely recommend this one, but please read book 1 first. It sets up the world and the issues with the EYE, the evil Priests, and why these brothers are at odds with one another.

Based on books 1 and 2, I would recommend this series.

I didn’t like this as much as the first.

I hate when we have to see other people the hero has slept with, and since she works at a pleasure house, she is literally surrounded by everyone he’s slept with. And she has to hear about it a lot. Not to mention he has a “favorite” pleasure worker who has feelings for him and who he chooses to spend a night with over the heroine in the beginning. He can’t get hard for her, but she doesn’t find this out until later and still can’t resist him… no thanks.

I don’t know, that set a sour tone for me and it was hard for me to like him after. Yes, he has little self confidence and trauma and eventually realizes he’s all in with her, but I just wasn’t loving it as a whole.

This is a case of I really wanted to like this, and I did for the first half, and then I was ....bored out of my mind for the second half. I like character driven romance, but I also want something more than conversation and lots o' sex. I'm going to try the third book and see how it goes, but I like the potential for the overarching story, but the romances need some oomph because they're not setting the world ablaze right now.

I enjoyed the first book but this just wasn’t the same.

For a start a side female character Y’len was far more likeable and intriguing than the main character and Thren the MMC was unlikeable. He wasn’t unlikeable because he is grumpy I can live with that but it’s because he’s a lying, manipulative gaslighting bastard and she just shrugs and goes oh well I like sex with him 😡

Also the FMC never stops with the poker metaphors (we get that your father was a poker player but shut the fuck up with the metaphors please) and she goes on and on and one about her fucking moleskin notebook she used to have and her bloody t swift tshirt gets namechecked so much as well I wanted to burn her fucking moleskin and tshirt.

I cannot fathom the physiology of the Ghudis and how they are male but h can have children and why their genitalia is seemingly just pointing up from their backs which seems weird.

I will give this series one more go I think but this book just wasn’t it.

Oh and also I didn’t realise in the first book that all the guys are bald. 🧑‍🦲 that’s just not my thing and took me out of the fantasy of it a bit but that’s a personal thing.

Thren in book 1 was a jerk. Getting to know his POV is heartbreaking. Bree is just the girl for him. She's sweet, lived an Interesting life on Earth that's left her open minded but not jaded. Thren needs that. Looking forward to book 3.

"We have to learn how to love each other, Thren. Not just keep each other.”

I mean...?

This is an alien romance and it did surprise me more than I anticipated. I must start a hundred KU books before I find one worth finishing and I finished this one because it had evidence of skill. What separates subpar from par KU books for me is the author's grasp of literary conventions--do they know what a metaphor is? Can they write an original one, or is every single sentence a copy and paste of cliched convention? Do they have a semblance of plot? Is there something that sets the sex apart, or is it just mindless and immediate?

Sara Ivy Hill has read good books before. I can tell. She's aware of how much we're sickened by the I'm not like all the other girls trope; she knows the power of character foils and situating a meaningful backstory within a bigger narrative. There are good relationship messages in here as evidenced by the first quote I shared. The heroine is teaching the hero a lesson: don't keep me; respect me as I respect you. That's rad.

This story is situated in a fairly wacky world. There are centaurs with four arms and a...protrusion?...that's touched during...running prayer laps?...and alien poker that's played with different strategies based on religion and some of the aliens have skin that changes color based on their mood and there's crowns that sink into people's foreheads and I just...went with it? You have to go with it. Enjoy the creativity and let the rest go.

The MC is asked to pay off her debt in an alien brothel and she pole dances and the dude (who's in charge of a planet and is resentful of his emperor brother) feels an instant connection and then there's a surprising amount of restrain on his part as he doesn't want to sex her up immediately (because the author would feel guilty about this--it's so not modern, otherwise) so he "dates" her and it's a short book so there's a lack of dithering, they love each other and it's all good with minimal angst.

Anyway, I really did feel nothing as I read this, but that's on me. There were some things I liked (the bits of metaphor, the hints of deeper meaning), but I need something more if I'm meant to care about the relationship. I have to feel invested in a couple before their hookups read as anything more than a diagrammed anatomy lesson. Less than 300 pages? No. It's not enough. They were both better than the average KU character, but that's not saying much. It was still too shallow to inspire any passion. I mean, I was happy for them? But it's like your best friend telling you about her great aunt Meredith. You wish Meredith well, but there's a detachment that prevents you feeling big feelings.

I'm not rating this, especially seeing that there aren't many reviews to begin with. This is written by a KU author who's probably trying to supplement her income, who's not trying to write a mainstream bestseller. If I knocked it down, I'd feel like an asshole. I'm not the target audience for this, and that's on me. I think plenty of people would really enjoy this, but those people are the people that have a better KU success rate than yours truly.

I hope this author makes bank and lives her best life.

3/5 ⭐️
Thren is a good boyfriend because he’s going to make sure that you will have all the fruit you could ever want.

•••

Possible Triggers - Abduction, human trafficking, threat of sexual violence, violence, death

•••

Tl;Dr - While Bree is being sold to buyers unknown, Thren is bitching about having to find the lost humans. Pretty silly when you put it like that. But when Thren is presented to usurp the empire from his brother allying with the a religious sect, he takes it. Things start to get extra spicy when he makes Bree, a “terrakin” outsider, his “Alara” aka Queen. The religious dudes don’t like that at all.

•••

The Characters -
Bree: She’s a hustler and plans to survive on a alien planet by doing what she knows best, hustling. At the end of the day, Bree is a sweetheart looking for a home and a family.

Thren: He’s so grouchy that his brother is emperor. He simply cannot let it go. It’s kinda hilarious tbh. Just a large angry alien stomping around and pining for Bree. He’s a little dumb, but he’s got the spirit.

•••

My Thoughts - I hate those goddamn priests. Fuck them. They take advantage of Thren’s immense inferiority complex and promise him the empire as long as he cooperates. All he has to do is choose a queen. But here the thing about Thren, he doesn’t like being told what to do. The priests hate “Terrakins”? He makes Bree his Queen. Malicious compliance, baby!

Once Thren and Bree get together, we see different aspects of these characters emerge. They have both struggled with loneliness and abandonment, so their vulnerability with eachother is so sweet. Thren, though misguided at times, is DEVOTED to Bree. And Bree, she sees Thren’s efforts for what they are, earnest attempts to earn her affection, and appreciates him.

By the end, I was ready for the story to be done. I would have liked to see more development from Bree. It really feels like she walked away more-or-less unchanged… but now she has a husband. It was just lacking the mysterious and unnamed quality that pulls you into a story.

🔥 “I need to hear every greedy thought. Every dark wish. Every filthy desire you have. They’re all mine to fulfill.”
~~~
Bree hasn’t had an easy life. Growing up with a grifter father who abandons her, living on her own and then being abducted and sold to an alien pleasure house. But despite everything, she’s one amazing woman. I loved how sweet, caring and innocent she was. Even more, I adored her sharp and strategic mind and how freely and unconditionally she gave her affections. She’s so wonderful and I loved her so much!
And, I just couldn’t resist Thren, a.k.a. Mr. Tall, Dark and Angry. The huge, glowering king is one arrogant, bossy and demanding male and who’s so full of anger, pain and resentment. He might appear as a brute, but there is so much more to him than meets the eye. A lot rests on his shoulders and he’s oftentimes so hard on himself. But, despite everything, he’s so thoughtful, honorable and fiercely protective. He’s one beautiful, broken king that I couldn’t help but love more and more with each new chapter!
I absolutely adored everything that happened between Bree and Thren. Their chemistry was fantastic and their attraction - so strong. I loved the teasing and the banters. And the issues with the translator were so much fun to read - I laughed so much during Thren’s epic quest to find a “date”. Even more, the passion they shared was scorching hot! Bree’s seductive dances were fantastic and Thren’s dirty talk was so on point and absolutely panty-melting!
In addition, the storyline and worldbuilding were absolutely fantastic. I really liked Endan with its huge forests and epylium mines. And I loved the Ghudis. Moreover, the conflict with the Eye and the priests kept me glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, the story is an unputdownable and spectacular addition to the series. It’s filled with suspense, betrayals, danger, drama, humor, tension, blazing hot romance and phenomenal characters.
I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next.
Stained by Starlight
This is a really fun world. I especially liked the Ghudis - their four gods and their way of “praying.”
The MMC is complex. At first it seems like he is just going to be a superficial hack and slash kind of personality, but he has interesting depth and he allows the MFC to heal a lot of his emotional wounds. His description of himself,
“Feeling is my strength. Fucking is my strength. Fighting, maybe. But thinking? It’s better for everyone if I don’t.”
She is a gambler (her father was a poker grifter). This comes in really handy when she discovers several of his lies of omission. She is more concerned that he kept stuff from her than the content of what he kept from her. Once they hash out why he kept things from her, she lets it go and moves on. (The lack of drama was actually a relief).
There's a light amount of SM and it's used really well to describe the way the main characters relate to each other.
I had a lot of highlights I could quote here but I'm just going to include my favorite. From the MFC’s point of view, her description of loving the MMC,
“This doesn’t feel like I won a hand. This feels like someone flipped the table, sent the chips flying. I’m not winning or losing; I’m not even in the game anymore. The game is over. Irrelevant. You can’t shuffle the deck if the cards are scattered across the universe.”
It's poetic and it captures the sense of chaos that surrounds both characters and their relationship. The author does a great job of sorting out their issues and everything going on around them in a way that is plausible and engaging and intense.
4 sólido.
Me encantó. Lo disfruté bastante, no lo podía soltar. Es sin duda más romántico que el anterior y con mejores personajes.
Me sorprendió bastante que no fuera tan dramático; por la trama esperaba una gran confrontación sobre la que creía que era la problemática principal pero al final el problema de nuestra pareja era otro. Eso me gustó.
Disfruté más a esta pareja por ser más carismáticos y tiernos entre ellos.
El mundo se amplia más en esta historia y poco a poco muestra más sobre la relación con los dioses y sobre el padre de nuestros galanes protagonistas masculinos (lo que aprecio bastante).
Aunque creo que la autora repite algunos de sus errores anteriores al no presentarnos más interacciones entre los hermanos. Darnos pistas de lo que podría ser entre ellos si no tuvieran problemas con papá y al mismo tiempo darnos un atisbo de sus personalidades y futuras parejas. Me gustaría esto para prepararme para el siguiente libro porque siempre termino yendo a ciegas con la siguiente pareja.
Porque el libro se centra totalmente en la pareja, lo que es genial claro. Pero que sin un gran drama (otro gran acierto), interacciones con otros personajes o subtramas... se vuelve más de lo mismo. Puede llegar a haber un bucle de interacciones entre los protagonistas.
En fin. En general una mejora notable en cuanto a personajes y trama. Lo recomiendo si buscas algo fácil, entretenido y con escenas spicy.
I absolutely loved reading this book. I read the first book in the series and when it was through, we were left wondering what happened to all the earth women. This is Bree’s story. Thren is the Jara of Endan, when he meets Bree in the pleasure house on his planet, he recognises she is his Alara and he will fight for her to stay with him. The priests are at it again but they manage to circumvent their plot for now. But they will stop at nothing to take over the ruling of the five planets, even if it means pitting one brother against the other. Bree and Thren admit their love to each other and despite their bumpy courtship, they find their happiness together.
I was given an advanced copy of this book to read and review with my honest and fair opinion.
Trees and Love
I'd like a tree house kingdom. Where can I find an Alien king with a whole planet full of forests?
This book was so natural and the relationship built so well. Every page was a special imprint and I didn't even realize I was nearing the end until it hit me that the book was gonna be over in 20 pgs.
Thren was equal parts of devout and humorous and I loved it. I'm still laughing about his apology to the other terrakins because he wash off his c0ck from the first mating. Although it was also super cute. I've never read anything like that before and I felt it just sealed his Character more.
The story was interesting and the Pacing well done. I just loved all of it! Start to finish!
I now have a few words that have been added to my vocabulary and my favorite one is “frix” as in this book was frixing wonderful! Thren and Bree have become one of my favorite couples. Their connection is intense and their encounters show it. There are a few spicy scenes along with funny moments as well as intense, oh my moments and a few plot twists. This book had me reading way past my bedtime and eating a lot of popcorn!! This is part of a series but it can be read as a stand alone. I can’t wait to read the other books. I only hope they are as good as this one. This was a complimentary copy given to me by Free Booksy and I am glad I decided to take it!
A Game for Forever
I’ll start by saying I did not read the first book but I was able to jump right in. Thren and Bree were a beautiful match of complicated pasts or “daddy issues” as they joke about and work through together. This genre is usually my palate cleansers because I know what to expect and I leave feeling those happy warm fuzzies, but I was honestly surprised at all the content I got in this. There was so much depth to the characters even the ones that you meet on the side. The Ghundis were enjoyable and a lovely highlight as well. The whole “dates” misinterpretation was enjoyable. I will definitely be picking up more from this author
I liked this book more than the last one honestly. I thought that Thren was more relatable to me and the author didn't have to provide AS much backstory so there was more romance than in the first one.
The woman was also a lot more into it from the start versus the last book where she has to come around to the idea of an alien as her mate which makes sense obviously. The self preservation is a lot different as well as their backstories and personalities.
I will say she could have questioned him a lot more, there were times when she accepted everything a little TOO quickly lol!
Stars: 5
FMC: Bree
MMC(s): Thren
Tropes: Alien planet, abduction/kidnapping, fated mates, family dynamics, mood changing skin, biting/marking. My add: sex worker FMC, OTT P MMC, gambling.
Perspective: Dual
Plot or character driven: Both
Spice level: 4
Burn speed: Fast
Can this be read as a stand-alone: Yes, but it's going to make a lot more sense if you've read the whole series.
Re-Readability: Yes.
Content/Trigger Warnings/Enticements: Abandonment and family issues. Minor character pregnancy mentioned in last chapter, discussion about pregnancy in epilogue.
Where Scorched by Starlight was a bit tamer when it came to the spice, Bree and Thren came in with a vengeance and a delight.
At points during this I was yelling at Thren, (he can be a numbskull but he's not cruel) and I was feeling for Bree and her past. Everything to do with her dad breaks my heart, and Thren has to work to prove that he's not going to abandon her like her dad did.
It's sweet, and hot, I devoured this like a seven course meal, slowly and relishing every bit of it.
Also, can we talk about the Ghudi? I loved everything about them, and though I don't think we will since we're going to be spending more time with the other brothers, I do hope we see them again. And I do love how we see Bree with them initially, and at the end, we see how much she's changed by how she interacts with them.
Oh what do I say about Thren? Angry, aggressive, fighter Thren. It was an absolute joy to be able to go on his journey with Bree to find the true Thren-the one he is inside. Bree was his perfect Alara as she was able to truly accept everything about him. She was able to see the male he was underneath all the anger. My heart ached several times as they worked through their fears.
It was also such a fantastic planet she ends up on. I loved the world building and how much Thren loves his planet. Again the love scenes are steamy. I loved everything about it!
absolutely
I loved it. To be so defeated and scarred by a parent and be reborn so to speak by someone who truly loves you is by far the best message this book has to offer. Whether it be by an alien or human. This is an awesome book to read. Of course there are some grammar issues but hey reading something that has this kind of intense thought and umph I personally didn’t care!
Great series!!
I got hooked on this series with book one and I'm more in love with it after reading this one. I love the cast of characters, and I loved the world building. The flow and the plot went well together and I loved the relationship between Bree and Thren. I loved how they developed their relationship and how they eventually played off each others strength. I will definitely stay with this series, and can't wait to read about the next couple!!
Great book!
I read this book first so now I am going back and reading the first. I loved this book but I figured I would since I loved her novellas in the anthology books she wrote in. The Mountains Mate was my favorite!!! Anyway I loved the characters even if I didn't always love how they acted. I hope I haven't ruined the first book for myself but I don't think so since the main characters in that book were only referenced to a few times.
slower burn than expected for an alien romance
There’s this tendency for fated mate romances, especially ones with big burly aliens or monster-like creatures, to immediately progress to the horizontal mambo. These stories, though, have a lot more heart than the norm and I for one enjoyed the slower build up to fulfillment. I love how each of these kings are learning what love is and being healed in the process. Looking forward to book 3.
Holy mackerel was this one hot and steamy! 🌶🌶🌶🌶 for SURE! My book is covered in highlights and I will SO be reading this one again after I finish the series.
Bree is spunky and fearless as she takes on Thren, the dark King! He afraid he'll break her into pieces and she is ready to be remade!
Don't recommend reading in public.
I don’t know
This has cool elements but it didn’t all come together for me… it had things I like: unique backstory for heroine (underutilized imo), fated mates, cool political backdrop (under fleshed-out imo).
I wanted to like it more it just didn’t feel high stakes enough to be engaging or cozy enough to be relaxing.
This book didn't work for me. The hero constantly complains about his brother and how his brother is King and has a Queen and he is lonely and in charge of a rural planet. He also pressures the heroine to be intimate (to be fair, she is a pleasure worker but workers have the right to choose their clients and what they will do with those clients).
I didn't like him.
I need Centaurs too.
This book takes you to another world and you won't want to leave. There's a bit of rough trade, grifting and power struggles. The book ties well with the series, but can be read as s stand alone.
Is it wrong to fall in love with secondary characters? Oh please Sara, write books about the magic Centaurs. They stole my heart too.
This was super plot heavy contrary to its cover art so it wasn’t what I was expecting. It was dual pov, but I find I enjoy the fmc pov the most in alien romances. It’s not bad, just wasn’t for me.
The setting is kind of like Avatar though which was cool! Insta-love, fated mates, royal blood line etc.
great read
Bit of a darker feel than book 1. They are best read in order. Loved the development of the mmc and how he overcomes his perceived weaknesses and faults. Also the strong survival instinct of the fmc and her big heart. A slow burn to get to the spice but with plenty of angst to keep you going
