Psst... Louize, salamat!

This is my ultimate favorite among Bob Ong’s books. Why you may ask? Because it’s deeply sad and yet heartwarming.

At first, I was questioning, “Why is the title ‘MacArthur’?” What does he have to do with the book? But I knew I had to be patient when it comes to Ong’s book, because surely, there’ll be a surprise in the end.

And I was right to have thought so. MacArthur rubs in the issue of poverty, graft and corruption, theft and drug addiction. This is the first of Bob Ong’s books that, despite the funny capers, I grew sad over reading it. I couldn’t help but empathize with how the lives of the characters turned out. And in the end, I knew why the title was as it is. The last part of the book may’ve not sufficed to eliminate the tears in my eyes while reading this and the fact that I wished to change what happened, but it was uplifting to know that even with all the life-shattering experiences, there’s always hope for us and it’s never too late to change for the better.

A heartbreaking Filipino tragedy centered around the ever-significant themes of poverty, drug addiction, criminality, and corruption.

Ong presents protagonists who are what many consider to be some of Philippine society's most persistent ills: drug addicts and thieves. MacArthur breathes humanity into these words with lives, personalities, dreams, and flaws.

Ong makes a point of showing that the protagonists resort to criminality out of necessity and desperation. That those who live in abject poverty have limited options and all the odds stacked against them. That the systems in place to help them are ineffectual at best, and callous, corrupt, and exploitative at worst.

This does not serve to justify their actions or absolve them of guilt, but rather to show us the complexities of their struggles and the realities of slum life.

The tense and graphic final confrontation with the corrupt policeman, as well as the shocking twist months after, highlight the desperate lengths they'd go through to survive, the fragility of hope, and the feeling of never being able to escape their circumstances.

"Mabisyo, gago, suwail.

Ganyan ung story, kakaiba.

Yung pagkakaibigan nila maganda.

So bakit Mac Arthur?

I won a copy of this during a Christmas party with my Goodreads friends last December. I mentioned this in one of my past posts, saying how I needed a larger bookshelf to fit all the new ones. Frankly, I thought this would be the last book I'd pick up among the promising pile, but figured a short read could easily decrease my backlog.

I liked it. Bob Ong's Macarthur is everything his Kapitan Sino is not. Characters are engaging, and the language flows as smooth as vulgar silk. While the story of young men living in an informal settler's area might not sound engaging enough to many, Ong's way of writing dialogue simply captivates. This is something Brillante Mendoza would've written if he decides to become an author, and something Jesus would come up if He resurrects and narrates a modern version of the Prodigal Son.

I would always recommend a Bob Ong book to the common reader. Take a break from the possibly pretentious recommendations of Nick Joaquin or F. Sionil Jose. What matters to me is that people are actually reading Filipiniana. I completely agree with what Bob Ong has to say about being a Filipino reader, that we "still owe local authors support." No matter what those elitist critics might say, there is still no denying that somewhere out there, a man who chooses not to reveal his true identity has changed the way Filipinos read over the years.

Now the only Bob Ong book I still haven't read is Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan. Anyone care to lend me a copy?

Macarthur's rate of returning five stars exhibits my vigorous recommendation for the book. This should be read by everyone residing in the Philippines simply because all the conflicts touched still display relevance in today's generation. My high recommendation targets high school and college students as they are the ones currently in transition of becoming part of the society. This book will surely provide additional guidance.

The strengths of the book are its convenient writing style - making it a complete page-turner, magnificent representation of societal illnesses as conflicts, tackling various issues like drugs, poverty, lack of education, unemployment, murder, and corruption - with its thought-generating ending, all these were effectively emphasized, and lastly, splendid interblend of positive and negative outcomes. The only weakness I found concerns the title despite understanding its underlying means.

My family and the people i hang out with are notorious for anything English. That is how amazing Bob Ong is. He makes us read and want to read his works even if it is a compilation of tagalog slangs. His book mac art hur is exactly this. It is a collection of Tagalog slangs. At first I thought maybe this is not his work because it does not have it's usual format, no enumerations (which he so fancies), and most of all, it is dramatic. But it was confirmed that it was his because of his favorite cursing: putanginamo! (sorry about this). This book made me realize that even those addicted to drugs have dreams and if they have the will, can change their lives. Dont get me mistaken. the usual wit is still here. My fave funny part is when Voltron threw up and revealed a whole guava that he did not even chew on. hahaha

I bought and read this just because of a dare from my friends. But I'm glad they dared me for I wouldn't be able to see the real beauty and talent of a Filipino writer. (yes, I haven't read any book from a Filipino writer even I am born and live in the Philippines. I'm sorry.)

What is the book all about:
This is on the subject of unexpected reality. (read this to see what I am really talking about. HAHAHAHAHA

What I liked:
I admire how Bob Ong wrote this one. It's just a short story (for me) and is very engrossing ( even I got a hard time reading it because I haven't read a story written in my own language for a long time.)

Why read this:
This is one of the books that are waiting for your hands to pick them up.

I scourge NBS yesterday and found the latest book by one of my fave Pinoy authors, Bob Ong. I was disappointed, though, seeing that the book was published last April. Argh! I wasn't aware! Duh?! I understand the slowpoke writing industry of the country. But the hell...even NBS? After four months?

Neways, I used to swear never to read Ong's books again. Seems like I already know how his mind works, not that of other authors who surprise you with their new masterpieces. Seeing MacArthur, however, I was curious. It was no anecdote collection but rather a novel. Ows? Ang Alamat ng Gubat was something some sort but it was lame to be a work of fiction.

MacArthur tells of the story of four best friends, living in the squatters, sniffing the discomforts of everyday Pinoy urban life.

Cyrus is a snatcher, and worse, a drug addict. OMG! Everytime he's caught with his modus operandi, he would swallow all his epektus so that the police would never found out. However, he can't outwit the devil cop named Topak, who would force him to expel everything via his anus and keep the jewelries for himself. Cyrus lives with his grandfather whom he calls Tatay. When the old man acquired some renal disease and thinking that hemodialysis is a torture in the pocket, Cyrus did everything for his Lolo to undergo a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, he ended up killing the old man when he had mistaken him as a monster when he was high on shabu.

Noel is a rebel son, spoiled by his mother, neglected by his once OFW father. He would sell or steal anything from their house to survive...as he was poor in school. Their family's hope, his sister named Lyla who is a student nurse. She would always ruin his day by suspecting him stealing his belongings, of which he's guilty. He would pour his angst to his friends who are as futureless.

Jim is a young father. He would do everything to feed his family, even selling pirated DVDs. He's the oldest of the four friends but not wise enough to advise. driven by their poverty, his wife threatened him of leaving him alone in the squatters. His son was sick, described by Bob Ong as always having a number 11 on the nose (yeah...the mucus). At the end of the novel, he went with his family to Bohol for good since they could no longer afford to pay fare back to dreadful Manila.

Denver, aka Voltron, is a frustrated college boy. His mother was a widow and he has five younger siblings to aid. He would go along with his friends for a racket. In his desperation to escape poverty, he involved himself with some crime lord and ended up beheaded with his body rotten with garbages. It wasn't revealed but I suspect salvage.

Now here's an expert's opinion about the book: it can bring the hell out of you. OMG! Every setting can make you puke. I can't blame Bob Ong...it's the bitter reality. I can't relate with a squatter's life, in obvious reasons...I even get nauseated by just visiting a relative's house in Magsungay. Neways, the book warns me not to live in Manila. Yes, I've been to Manila...not able too see the squatter's area though. But yeah, there's hell in the metro.

The grossiest part of the story was when Cyrus had a public CR for a dead end and Topak was after him. To conceal what he stole that day, he performed his usual swallowing of the epektus, add the packs of shabu he bought earlier that day. Gee, swallow jewelries. That's intestinal disaster! And oh, when one pack of shabu fell on the the toilet bowl, Cyrus picked it up not minding the fecal dumplings, wiped the wet pack and swallowed it before Topak arrived. YUCK!

Tang ina, taena, and tangna are words redundant in the text courtesy of the boys' squatterly tongue. It's enigmatic how the book got its title. But I remember one chapter, the four friends were talking about a malfunctioning toilet bowl. In it, the feces would not flush and goes back again and again. "I shall return!" That maybe a clue.

On the brighter side, Bob Ong depicts the resiliency of Pinoys. Life is sometimes cruel but enjoy the sweet moments. Imagine, the four friends managed to enjoy themselves at a carnival while one of them has a serious a problem. And Voltron's mother, oh how I like her, despite of their situation, still managed to get drunk with his eldest son's friends and joke about their lives. Cheers! Pinoys, after all, are the happiest people in Asia.

The book's proceeds would go to Gawad Kalinga. Good thing for Bob. Hmmm...I can't help myself but to foresee a Palanca with the book or just an indie flick. Three stars.

" I shall return." The book is metaphorically based on what General Douglas MacArthur said in 1942 as he left the Philippine Islands during World War II in the attempt of organizing the American offensive against Japan to help the Philippines in its cause. What's the connection of that line to the book? It's for the readers to know why the book was entitled MacArthur.

Published in 2007, MacArthur is Bob Ong's sixth book and was often told as the only book that Bob Ong thatis dramatic in nature. Like the classic Bob Ong, he again used some touches of humor and mixed it with the socio-political concept of the story.

This book is about the struggles of Filipino youth in dealing with the problems of today: drugs and vices, employment, education, social and economic status and family expectations. The book is a mixture of humor and sad truths like how the classic Bob Ong attacks certain issues in his books. The book though is notable for employing a brave and realistic look at life in a Philippine community.

The book is the story of four friends, Noel, Cyrus, Voltron and Jim who lives in a squatters area. Each has their own character and personality but share the same denominator - poverty. They live not in the best of conditions and to adapt they acquired certain coping mechanisms to adjust like learning learned how to make a living using illegal ways and using illegal drugs to forget their problems for the mean time. There's Noel, who came from a middle class family and a typical college student who eventually stopped studying because of financial reasons; Cyrus, the youngest member of the group and known for stealing things to make ends meet with him and his ailing grandfather whom he considers as his father; Voltron, also known as Denver and Amadeus and described in the book as skinny and has a big chest, small head, big hands and feet and whom suffered the worst fate in the book; and Jim, 23 years of age who has a wife and son. The book introduces the lives of each which mirrored the situation of some Filipino households specifically those that belongs to the urban poor. Through good times and hard times the four support each other.

I like how this book provokes emotion. The writer made me feel tense, happy, sympathize, sad and angry to each of the scenes that he create. The author made the book balance by writing in a way that no one would read the book and feel that the scenes were forced and far-fetched. The storytelling and delivery is very effective in telling the essence of the book.

The novel is thought-provoking and an eye-opener to the real lives of those who finds solace in taking drugs for pleasure to forget what they're going through. The author created engaging characters. The book portrayed them as someone who are also human who needs understanding and love. But because the frailty of their situations, they easily become prey to exploiters who abuse their weakness. They are to be understood and educated and not to be judged.

The book is written very simply but the message was easily and successfully sent across. Sad but heartwarming. Short but direct. The book mirrors reality, that's also one of the reasons, I believe, Bob Ong's books are always sought after.

The book is quite thin with just 89 pages and I wish it could have been longer. The book has alot of subplots that could have been expanded. Despite that, the book was given justice. The book ended, although wanting more, satisfied me. One thing that readers that needs to be cautious with is the choice of explicit and vulgar language, profanities, violence and the grotesque way some scenes are described. This book is not recommended for sensitive readers.

Siguro nga, ito ang other side nya - dark, twisted at pitiful which is good.

Yakang-yakang tapusin in 2hrs!:)

Wala, pare, ganon talaga e.
- Jim

Mabisyo, gago, suwail.

May mayaman, may mahirap.
