Marc Faoite
Marc Faoite asked Bonnie Tsui:

I live in Malaysia and have seen monkeys (crab-eating and long-tailed macaques to be precise) swimming many times. You mention in your book that primates need to be taught to swim, but it looks like it's just regular behaviour for these macaques. Unless it's like chimpanzees using sticks to fish for ants - a 'cultural' specificity in certain populations of macaques?

Bonnie Tsui Hi Marc! You're right that many monkeys can swim. It's the larger primates who seem to need to be taught -- a.k.a. the great apes, which include orangutans, chimps, and humans.
