This musical is a pretty hilarious retelling of the classic Princess and the Pea tale. Fred is one of my favorite musical leading ladies ever. All of the characters are a lot of fun and give the actors lots of opportunities to improvise and adapt characters to their own interpretations.
The musical definitely doesn't take itself, the story, the setting, (really anything) seriously. The characters are exaggerated and cartoonish. I've done the show once before, and we are planning to do it again in the fall, so I've been refamiliarizing myself with the script. There are some elements of the play that are a bit dated- the oversexed King, Harry and Larken's relationship is more than a little cringey in regards to enforcement of gender roles. Overall, though, these factors can be played down with good directing....more

Somehow it made the stories seem more familiar, because I know enough about the X-characters to fill in a lot of character blanks. Not a bad read, with decent enough art....more

The writing is good, even if the volume here is short. The art is colorful and gorgeous, but I have a real problem with how similar all of the female characters look. Their only real differences are hair styles and outfits- their faces are pretty much identical....more

Michael Turner's artwork really caught my eye on this one, all the color and detail, and that's really the main reason I picked up the first issue. The story is appealing: the return of magic to a world that largely knows only technology. I read it as each issue came out, though, so the story was a bit difficult to follow at times due to an erratic publishing schedule and my inability to remember much in between installments. I also notice more and more that Turner's female characters all look essentially the same with a few varying details- usually in the hair or clothes. It's annoying, especially from an artist so praised for his work....more

A comic book superhero with multiple personality disorder, almost unlimited power, who the world has largely forgotten about. Now there's a bit of a twist on superheroism. It's a far different concept from what we're used to seeing in superheroes. I love the idea that he was once this huge hero who did all this cool stuff, but because he was insane he went into hiding and the world completely forgot him. Now he's remembering all this stuff that once happened, and the other characters in the Marvel universe also have to deal with remembering him, and dealing with his psychoses....more

The Kree/Skrull conflict is in full force here and the kids are smack in the middle of it, for good reason. Honestly, the way the kids are written into it is fairly brilliant and they become lynchpins for the whole mess. Backstories are developing complications here and the young heroes are developing. The art is solid. Definitely recommend....more

Some characters have happier lives under the House of M and others have it much worse. The "what ifs" that this storyline poses are captivating. The whole story is emotional and very intense....more
