Really excellent historical short story with light romance and lots of true historic references. Terrific narration.

It's dark, thoughtful, and sometimes difficult to read, but ultimately extremely important to read as well. The characters, including the frozen river and Winter itself, are well-drawn and the writing is impeccable. Ultimately it's a love song to a strong, mature woman who uses her skills and courage to help those around her. I suspect Martha's story will stay with me for a long time....more

Although the more I think about it, the less I like it. It was predictable, and the 'falling in love with my captor' trope is not only old school, but pretty awful. The heroine both sounded too modern, and came across as spoiled and naïve. The author tried to write her as strong and independent, but the way she treated Duncan regarding her former fiancée and his horrific actions showed her real personality. And regarding the former fiancée - he felt like a copy of Outlander's Black Jack Randall....more

And honestly it was a bit difficult to read - Adrian's anxiety was nearly debilitating and MCs with an anxiety disorder tend to make me anxious as well. But the pacing finally sped up and Adrian's anxiety was only front and center a few times (the leeches!), and I began to enjoy it more. Can an adventure be fun and dark at the same time? Because this was....more

I did feel a bit like sections had been used many times before: the Taming of the Shrew setup, and idea of waiting (for the length of the book) to consummate a marriage. But I really enjoyed reading about the family's china business and how it worked within the storyline.
Sadly, the resolution/ending was abrupt, lame, and forgettable. It was almost as if the author wasn't sure how to deal with it. And I'm guessing that the series is about the three men in line to be the next duke, but the author didn't do a good job of explaining that either....more

I found it enjoyable - especially the 18th century storyline. It has something of a scholarly feel to it - similar (but not as good as) The Discovery of Witches trilogy. The modern storyline was not as good as the historical one, mostly because the heroine acted stupidly in several situations. I was also troubled by the secrets she chose to keep - it made me like her less.
However, the cover and the narrators were all terrific....more

Enjoyable, but I was a bit disappointed in Hero. She seemed so much more interesting in the first book, and I was looking forward to her story. She was a bit lukewarm in this one. And she succumbed to Griffin's charms way too quickly! Given her actions in the first book, I thought their relationship would've been more of a slow burn and more of a give-and-take. Instead she, rather meekly, gave in to insta-lust pretty much right away, and honestly there just wasn't enough character development for this to be believable....more

The author does a great job of world building, with a somewhat slow, but interesting story line.
A few cautions: 1. This is part of a trilogy. This novel and the 2nd in the series are essentially cliffhangers. And the 3rd is not available on audiobook. 2. It isn't listed as YA, but has the feel of a YA novel. 3. The author is not particularly good with historic detail. The overall feeling is nicely done, but some of the detail is just wrong! No one had that kind of medical knowledge in the 1730s. And some of the language and references are incorrect. The author didn't seem to understand the concept of a required companion/chaperone for a single young woman. And in the 2nd book she references a guillotine which wasn't invented until the late 1700s. And she paraphrases Marie Antoinette...
About the narrator: Generally I think she was a good fit for Selah. However, every once in a while we get glimpses of her Australian accent. And I was really offended on behalf of the Lenape people that she couldn't be bothered to look up how to pronounce 'Lenape.'...more

My favorite part of this book was Kate, a feisty version of Cinderella.
I thought it dragged a bit through the middle. And was really puzzled by the historical timeframe until I listened to the author's note at the end and learned that she didn't intend it to be historically accurate.
I have had mixed feelings about both Eloisa James and Susan Duerden, the narrator, but thought both did a good job in this instance....more
