Sh3.5 ⭐️This was one of those books that the mystery is simmering in the background while characters are unaware. Hazel is smart, rich, and ambitious. She’s also young and her privileged life has sheltered her from a lot. She has dreams of being a physician. Hazel thinks that if she just works hard enough she can achieve that dream, but that’s not how real life works. She is so focused on what she wants, she misses a lot of the darker things around her. Jack has had a hard life and continues to struggle. I mean…he sells dead bodies. That’s not a job that happy thriving people would choose.
These two meet because Hazel needs bodies to study. The feelings start to happen.
I will say the mystery wasn’t even something the characters are vaguely aware of for the majority of the book. You as the reader are putting the pieces together way before them.
I’m hoping to pick of the second soon because the action just started. Also I wished the epilogue didn’t exist bc I liked the questions we would have been left with going into book two....more

Ok so this is a gothic AF horror story about a cult living on a secluded island in the early 1920s. You are bouncing between two pov, one before the opening chapter and one years after. The creepy vibes of this were on point. The atmosphere was both beautiful but sinister. The star of this book was the “family” dynamics. How the cult worked. How these people could fiercely love but never truly trust each other. Uncle is the leader and a master at pitting these people against one another. The cult members were fascinating!!! I was totally invested in watching this group slowly work towards our final scene.
That twist though.
I thought I had it figured out (and I was close) but it was satisfying. I see why this won the Shirley Jackson award. There were sentences in this that literally made me pause and appreciate.
Was it scary? No. Was it a creepy ass gothic cult book. Yes, very yes, all the yes....more
