Do you ever get this nice warm feeling that something is going to be wonderful, you get all happy and excited but the end result ends up lacking? That was me with this trilogy.
I went into the books completely blind. I picked them because THE COVERS are everything, didn't read the BLURB, didn't read reviews, didn't even have the slightest idea what the book was about. So when I realised that this was a Beauty and the Beast retelling, my excitement shot through the roof and the first book didn't disapoint at all. And then the series kinda...deflated and declined.
The other two books weren't bad...They just failed to capture the same excitement....more

This book wasn't bad but it really had many things working against it at the time. The first one is that it is YA and it shows. It is a rare YA book that will keep my attention these days and if it wasn't for the accidental request I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place. The second is that due to lack of free time when I got the ARC, it took me a while to finish it and I tend to lose interest in a book if I have to read it with a lot of breaks.
Still, even I can admit that this was a good recipe for a book even if I managed to burn it.
The book has a decent heroine first and foremost. Lila is an intriquing character with many aspects. In the beginning I though she would be the badass, selfish, slightly bitter type of heroine but she grows through the book and we can see her more kind and selfless side. Would I have prefered it if she had proven herself a bitch? Probably, but I like character growth.
I also thought that what with this being YA and the insta-connection moment, less than 15% in the book, we would end up with an angst filled romance story but luckily JE kept it well in hand and gave the romance room to develop in the next books.
Now, tbh I have a bit of lukewarm feelings about Devon. I honestly don't find him interesting enough to have a more elaborate opinion on him. He is troubled and he is a nice guy and we have seen this particular show a thousand times.
My favorite part were by far the secondary characters(which were awesome and hilarious). The whole Mafia-style Families didn't hurt either.
So, the book is good. It just wasn't me. I probably won't read the rest but you never know... What I do know is that I should retry JE's adult series. I've only read 4 books and I remember liking it.

This is a YA high-school romance and it was cute as hell but sadly too short. The short length meant that the story was a little rushed and you didn't have the time to form a solid opinion of the characters.
Still, both Ryan and Jamie are really sweet kids and I liked how the Secret Santa exchange story went. Ryan was funny trying to find a gift that wouldn't disappoint the "out of the closet" gay kid who had very few friends and didn't need more trouble. The fact that Ryan is secretly gay only adds to his determination not to blow it. But he doesn't expect to start seeing Jamie in another light and doesn't know how to react to Jamie not being willing to keep their "friendship" a secret.
Cute, fun and Christmasy... It could have used a few more pages but all in all a delight.

I almost skipped this story because it isn't important to the books but I'm damn happy I decided to read it. It explains so many things. It explains why Monica has it in for Shane(and really, the girl doesn't deal with rejection well) and it shows how close Shane was with his sister Alyssa. The camaraderie between the siblings is very sweet and makes you understand why Shane almost lost it after her death.
And Monica is one crazy bitch. I really have no idea how a decent guy like her brother Richard can go around picking up her messes. He should have locked her in an asylum for the criminally insane years before the main series' events. The girl is dangerous.
And I thought I couldn't hate Shane's dad more but I was wrong.
His dad grabbed him and shook him. “Why didn’t you get her?” he yelled, right in Shane’s face. “She was your responsibility!” He was slurring his words, so drunk he could hardly stand up.
