The main character is an entitled bitch. I was dying to throw her out the airlock or drown her in her own cocktails. The mystery was lame, the writing was stilted and the she/her woke bullshit drove me nuts. Thank God, I didn't buy this book but borrowed it from the library....more

It's a saccharine look at the struggles of writing a book and publishing it. Stuffed into the book are short anecdotes from award-winning authors who struggled before they made it big. Every single endorsement is from an award-winning, bestselling author. What about the competent and consistently published ones but DIDN'T get on the NYT bestseller list?
There are better books out there. Strunk and White, Bird by Bird and others, are more interesting and don't drip with cheerleader encouragement.

Six people are recruited for an exercise in complex magic, with far reaching consequences. But once the characters are recruited, the book is awful. The dialogue is phony, the characters become improbable and the story....is there a story? I think it got lost in there somewhere. I'm going to drop the off at Half Price Books and go find something else to read....more

Something about the setup was annoying. Sulu's daughter refers to "Uncle Chekov" which is a little too cutesy for me. Ditto for Scott's references to his nephew. McCoy's attempts to play matchmaker for Kirk was also annoying. It's the sort of thing McCoy would do, and I liked Kirk's firmly putting McCoy in his place but it was still irritating. Can we please drop all this personal stuff? That would include the endless backdrop stories (explanations of Federation politics, Kirk's memories of Khan, and so on)
Anyway, I tried but finally gave it up. I still like his books and I hope he'll write more Star Trek stories. I'll be there, Kindle in hand, ready to try again. I gave up on the book, I haven't given up on Christopher L. Bennett....more

It was basically a paperback romance for intelligent readers who understand words of more than two syllables. The writing is good and the story is more sophisticated than your usual chicklit. However, it's still got the usual cliches: will they do it or not..when they do it it takes an entire chapter, they argue about everything but fall in love anyway...both bring dark secrets to their relationship...blah blah blah. If you like romance, you might like this one. As for me, I'm getting back to space ships and vicious vampires....more

AdditionaI wanted to like this book, I usually enjoy re-tellings of classic fairy tales. But this one is confusing because of the multiple narrators. Additionally, the constant cruelty of every male in the story is irritating. Women are treated like dirt, and it's upsetting and tedious. And the story takes about 5 pages to narrate what could be said in 1 page. Okay, we get it! It's cold! Males are horrible! The characters are poor and always hungry! Enough already....more
