Easy, accessible recipes that are tasty. There are plenty of tips if you'd like to make substitutions (e.g.a milder sauce or a different vegetable) and the recipes include traditional American cooking and interesting dishes from around the world. Each recipe is one page and there are only a few photographs, perhaps to reduce publishing costs. Each recipe has tabs e.g. low sodium, nut-free, gluten-free, vegan.
Highly recommend this one especially if you are trying vegetarian for the first time....more

The demands of fashion have put Chinese women in literally foot-crushing shoes. African women had their necks elongated unnaturally and Victorian women wore huge round skirts that often caught fire and burnt them to death. Men wore starched collars and silly tall hats. Tudor men wore absurd codpieces and Tudor women painted their faces with lead paint that slowly poisoned them. Many modern women wear heels so high, they can cause long-term leg damage. Fashion can indeed be wicked. However, fashion can also be fun and/or beautiful and many of the pictures in this book show the more positive side of fashion. The pictures are taken from the entire range of AL's career, some are simple photographs, others are extremely elaborate constructions of set, lighting, and acting. Unfortunately, the book suffers from the same problem almost all her books have: lousy editing. Gutters run right through the most interesting part of the image, or the picture is placed so the gutter is pushed over to the right or the left, which destroys the visual balance of the picture. Not all the pictures are identified and the reader is forced to hunt for the information pertaining to the photograph. There is no dust jacket and the cover is bland and uninteresting. This may something to do with cost and printing expenses. The book is $80 (Disclosure: I got it for half price. No way was I going to pay $80) and perhaps they were concerned about pricing the book out of the market. The photographs are interesting and I'm glad I added this book to my collection of coffee table-style photography books. But be aware of its flaws, even as you enjoy the photographs themselves. And if you have those awful high heels, please throw them in the trash. ...more

It discusses what could be a really boring topic: Meso American ancient civilizations and makes the topic fascinating. In short, using modern space-age technology, an ancient city in the jungles of Honduras is found and explored. However, the historians and scientists who explore the city come back to civilization infected with potentially deadly bacteria and some heal more successfully than others. This leads to a connection between pathogens and the collapse of ancient cities, which is what happened to the City of the Monkey God. I really enjoyed this book. A good story, well-explained science, and exciting anecdotes of looting, venomous snakes, and struggling to recover from extremely potent pathogens. The book strikes the right balance between science and entertainment, it is informative but NOT sensationalist. Highly recommended....more

(yes, U.S. equivalents are listed) Additionally, some of the recipes use esoteric ingredients. What the heck is potimarron squash and what on earth is a "soya-based plant drink"?
However, the photographs are gorgeous and I do want to try some of the recipes. And I am all for one-pot anything, convenience means alot to me as I get older.
So, three stars for the photographs, easy recipes. Two stars subtracted for esoteric grocery shopping and having to deal with the vernacular and measurements.

The book is mostly ramblings about her experiences as a traveler, she likes to go to out-of-the-way places such as small cafes in Berlin, obscure cities in South America, that kind of thing. Some folks love this style of writing...ramblings about not much of anything that explores different ideas or experiences. Personally, I don't care for it. I prefer a more logical, linear narrative. I can see the appeal, folks who like Emily Dickinson would love this book. ...more

Thorough research, accessible explanations of complex science and engineering, and plenty of primary sources make for an absorbing story of one of the most tragic events in space exploration. The book does not soften the horror of the event but it ends on an optimistic note: because of the Apollo 1 fire, new protocols were put into place, political boondoggles were reined in (companies and politicians made millions off of the space program) and space exploration became a better balance of human endeavor and international cooperation, less of an expensive, political "space race". Highly recommend this one....more
