This was cute, but I didn't entirely buy the premise, and I also could not stop thinking about how the heroine hadn't even brushed her teeth and she's kissing the MMC at the end and just, gross.
Anyway, I didn't know Ashley Poston, but I liked the writing enough to check out some of her other books....more

If you need supplemental, bottled oxygen to reach the top of a mountain, then maybe you shouldn't be trying to climb it in the first place.
It's strange to say I 'loved' a book that tells such a horrific tale, but I found this utterly fascinating and couldn't put it down. I was already familiar with Krakauer's work, so I'm not surprised that he managed to write a riveting account of what happened in the lead-up to this disaster. It felt weird to be so gripped reading about the worst tragedy in the author's life, but here we are.
I particularly appreciated that he admitted to having made many mistakes as well. Not everyone would be able to acknowledge such a thing. Now I'm off to watch every possible documentary I can find about this....more

Instead, this was a book that focuses mainly on overcoming severe trauma and grief, and how people have different ways of getting on with their lives and coping with it.
I wasn't expecting it to be so heavy, so I had a somewhat jarring reading experience. There's also very little romance, in spite of both sisters both having their own romance angle. I didn't care all that much for either, because one wasn't explored enough and the other was too much of a slow burn (and I love slow burn so it takes me a lot to complain about that).
The 3 stars is entirely because Madi, one of the sisters, runs an animal shelter and that stuff is my catnip....more

This was a far cry from what I was expecting from a book set in Paris. The city doesn't come to life at all, which is a wasted opportunity.
The romance is barely there, even less than in the other books, and when they did get together I was mostly indifferent because Sebastian was an asshole to Nina for most of the book and it turns out it was for no apparent reason. He changed course so fast it gave me whiplash.
And Nina wasn't much better, to be honest. Unrequited love is tricky to pull off, and Nina kept describing her infatuation with Sebastian as "pathetic" and I'm inclined to agree; I also found it incredibly pathetic.
The usual found family aspect was present here again as well, but I was less charmed by it this time. I had no patience for any of these idiots.
I was ready to call it quits with this series - since I only just found the second book okay too - but the next book will be Alex's story and he's legit the only character I liked here, so I'll probably still pick it up....more

The beginning wasn't too bad, I blame it on that. But this book has no real plot, the characters are pretty bland and thirteen-in-a-dozen and the writing just isn't good. It's the cringey kind of romance I dislike.
Also, it features main characters I can't relate to in the slightest.

Extremely social people freak me out. Should've called it quits at that point....more

This was nowhere near as strong as 'A good girl's guide to murder' in my opinion. I really struggled to keep reading at the beginning, because I found Bel completely insufferable.
Her attitude didn't always make sense to me, not even in light of any past traumas. She was unfriendly and unkind to almost anyone, and it's hard to want to keep reading when you can't stand the main character.
The pacing was also all over the place. Incredibly slow in the middle and suddenly too fast towards the ending. The book could have easily been 100 pages shorter.
I did enjoy the mystery itself, and wanted to get to the bottom of it. It's pretty farfetched and you have to suspend your disbelief a good amount, but I was entertained so I'm rounding up to 3 stars....more

What a ride. This was such a compelling book, I couldn't wait to pick it back up every time. It's also relatively short (my ebook copy had 240 or so pages); I feel like it could easily have been 100 pages longer, but I appreciate that the author chose not to do that.
I would also hesitate to call this a thriller. It's more of a domestic suspense/mystery, I'd say.
There's some truly unlikeable characters, and there's probably two plot twists too many but I did not care. I ate it up like a fast food meal....more

The last few books of hers (both in this series and one of her other ones), I just haven’t gelled with. I heavily skimmed the better part of this, because I quickly noticed that this wasn’t going to be my jam either.
The cringey nicknames 5 pages in had me running for the hills. And it saddens me that I didn’t love this because it has kittens! And other lovely rescue animals! I’m genetically programmed to love those stories, but alas.

I cry because I now I cry because this very much read like it will have been the last Aaron Falk novel and I am not ready to say goodbye, I love him.
I cry because I now have no more books by Jane Harper to catch up on and will have to wait until she publishes new work in the future.
But phew, what a ride. This was my favourite of this series, and even if I'm sad that it will probably be the last installment, I love that things were wrapped up and we left everyone in a good place. Falk and Raco's friendship is a thing of beauty and I adore that what they went through in book 1 created a bond that will last a lifetime.
Exiles is - like its predecessors - a slow and quiet mystery. It's not high on drama or suspense, but there's an eeriness that Harper excels at, a sense of 'something not quite right' from start to finish. For crime readers that tend to like faster paced novels, with more suspense and higher stakes, this might be incredibly dull and slow. But for me, I like this just as much as the action packed ones. More, probably, since there are less of these and I find the mystery at heart often more believable.
I started suspecting the resolution of the main mystery around the halfway point and turns out I was right, but that did not take away from my enjoyment. I constantly felt the need to keep reading, I was desperate to know the answers.
Can't wait to read whatever she writes next....more
