But it feels like the author has gained some writing skill in the time since the first novel. And I like the way things are going down with many of the characters, although I have to admit that Jeffrey's character seems too one-dimensional at this point. ...more

This story offered a little bit of insight on the history that led to the games, but not really enough to lead me satisfied about the history of Panem. It's just one more chapter in a long history that seems to fill me with more questions than answers.
It wasn't gripping enough to make me finish it in my usual time frame, but not so bad that I had to force myself through it either.

I haven't read a good fantasy in over a year, so I enjoyed it. However, I could definitely tell it was one of Sanderson's earliest novels. The plot and writing wasn't what I've come to expect from Sanderson, and didn't leave me feeling as satisfied as his other stories. I'm sure it had more to his inexperience as an author at that point than anything else. If he'd written the same story today it would be much better.

The two genres I have to admit that I was skeptical of this book before I even started reading. A fantasy novel set during industrial revolution era? The two genres just didn't mesh in my mind. I shouldn't have worried. Brandon Sanderson did a great job welding the Mistborn concept into a new framework, and I found it very refreshing. Can't wait to read the rest of the series, putting my faith in Sanderson to give us a wonderful ending just like the last Mistborn trilogy. ...more

Even then, it was hard to picture how a stage-production of this script might take place.
In general, for me the scenes were to short for adequate character development to occur, which made the story less relate-able and less believable. ...more
