After seeing so many stellar reviews on this one, I have to admit I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like it only because of the hype. Or that I would like it, but not as much because I expected too much from the book. And that just wasn’t the case. I went into this book with such high hopes and finished the book with a multitude of emotions and thinking “damn that was a good book.”
My biggest regret right now is not buying extra editions of this book during the Barnes and noble hardback sale.
This book honestly has everything and means so much to me. I loved that we had a main character of color who was constantly being bullied for being different. Whether she was in the regular world being bullied for her race and her financial situation, or in the magical world being bullied over her abilities that she had no control over. And yet she still managed to stay strong but she also took time to lash out occasionally and that felt so real to me.
I also LOVED the tests/trials especially the first two. They were inventive and super fun to read about and they just made sense to me. Testing honesty and integrity the way they did just was *chefs kiss*.
I will 100% be continuing this series and possibly be purchasing another edition for myself and maybe even some for my friends and family. ...more

I really liked that the characters all had tensions and pasts together but that they weren’t really defined. Not knowing exactly what, but knowing that they they all had some secrets or beef with each other, made it even more nerve-wracking since you didn’t know exactly what would make someone crack.
Overall, I enjoyed it and I especially enjoyed the main character’s thoughts on grief and her own mental turmoil. However, I wasn’t a fan of the ending which seemed like it wrapped up a little too nicely/quickly. ...more

Something I’ve always enjoyed about romance novels is the power they have to make you believe in the main character. The MC could be a professional clown, a home fixer-upper, or even a convicted felon just out of jail and a romance author will not only have you rooting for them but make you wish you were them so that way you could experience their Great Love. I can’t say I’ve ever read a romance that featured convicted felon especially a female one, but I loved how the author didn’t shy away at showing the prejudices that our MC had to face and also how tough it can be once your free from prison.
I really enjoyed the love interest, not from the start, but he grew on me. He was a big exec for a fancy store and had a southern accent and dressed a little funny, but had a big heart. He may not have been our typical dark hair, grey eyes, slender man sized dude that we all hate to love, but as the story progressed I really enjoyed him as a character and how he and our MC were able to grow from each other.
My only complaint, is that I thought this would be a little smuttier. Do better Ms. Bailey, because I think we’re ready for you to hit us with your best shot. ...more

We have an age-gap romance, but when it starts the younger of the two is in his mid-twenties, graduated from college, with a job, but a little down on his luck still and living with his parents. The older, Erica, has recently been cheated on by her husband, get a divorce and and a year later is still trying to get back into the game.
I really loved how Erica had only just recently come into Troy’s life through friendship with his mom and not been there the whole time with some position of authority above him. I also really enjoyed how the two had a music connection between the two of them and a couple of other similar interests so it wasn’t so crazy to think that they might have worked out in real life.
All in all, the book was steamy, but had a decent plot, and good banter between the two. ...more

It was new and exciting, and I liked the setting just a bit more. I feel like setting a book in Paris is kind of getting overrated and boring for me. Also, it doesn’t help that I’ve recently read another book by the same author also set in France.
That being said, this was still a lot of fun, but I felt like the Harry Potter references were a bit too much. I’m enjoying the direction the series is going, overall, and can’t wait to see what the third book has for us. ...more

I think the graphic novel does a fairly good job of keeping the reader informed about what happened in the books and keeping the story moving without any issues. I enjoyed the story overall and felt like I wasn’t really missing any big pieces, maybe just some backstory.
The story however, did feel a little shoved together like they tried to make it stand on its own, but maybe should have dedicated more page time to make the pieces fit a little more smoothly. In addition, I wasn’t super impressed with the characters. There were a lot of really skinny characters or big and buff characters. And I wish there had been a bit more representation especially since the story is so visual. ...more
